Common Questions and Answers about Asacol and probiotics

asacol

Avatar n tn m now 61. The days and weeks of diahrrea limit my life and activities. Outside of Colostomy, I know there is no cure, but can taking over the counter drugs like acidolphus bring any relief. Taking Immodium Ad only adds to the problem with severe stomach cramps. I know steroid treatment is out there, but not looking forward to side effect. I'd like to plan an outing, vacation or special event w/o worry of where the next bathroom is, or what might happen if I can't find one.
Avatar f tn I have her on probiotics, a vitamin, fish oil, calcium pill and the last thing I added 2 months ago was l glutamine. WOW what a difference in her.
Avatar f tn diff testing requires it be done in triplicate. It can be missed in a single sample. You may have to take probiotics for several weeks to note a difference. In addition, some probiotics work better than others for some individuals. You may want to consider trying a different brand if one doesn't seem to help. IBS is a 'generic' catch-all for 'this person has a GI problem, bowel issues, pain, and we don't have any test results that show anything.
Avatar f tn My doctor put me on Asacol and I had horrible uncontrollable diarrhea. I took it for a few months and decided constipation was less painful and embarressing than diarrhea. You may try drinking Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with honey. It's a natural remedy for reducing inflammation and it works.
Avatar m tn I enjoy the Lialda because I was taking 3 pills three times a day with Asacol and now I only take 4 pills once a day with Lialda. I haven't been on the Lialda for very long, but so far the results are good. I'm not sure that it is better than Asacol, but I think it is easier and equal in performance. You might ask your doctor if they have any prescription cards for Lialda. My doctor was given cards from Lialda, which you can use with your insurance.
Avatar f tn I started Asacol almost two weeks ago, and it worked very well after a couple of days, but after almost two weeks, I got very weak, dizzy spells, fatigue, like the flu. It's been five days, and most of the time I need to lay down. I couldn't go to work today. When does it stop? I stopped the medication four days ago. It was for colitis.
Avatar f tn human strain and plant strain...plant is useless and I say go F yourself to the companies that make them because those probiotics are for aesthetic reasons only, the moment you have a BM they are flushed out and DO NOT colonize; however, on the other hand the HUMAN strains do colonize but they take time hence the 3 weeks of yogurts with probiotics sprinkled on top.
Avatar m tn Try to stay away from dairy, alcohol, grains (have rice instead). If you can figure out what triggered the flare, that would be helpful so you know to avoid it in the future.
Avatar n tn I have noticed that my asacol is not breaking down and is being passed in my stool! Is their a reason for this? What can/should I do?
420686 tn?1219632592 After having her, I had CD and went to a GI doctor and got diagnosed with Crohns. With medicine (ASACOL) all my symptons went away in about 4 months.. Then I got pregant with my son in 2005 and I had a great pregnancy.. no problems, no symptons of Crohns. The day I gave birth to him, my Crohns came back with a vengance. All my symptons came back and they were worse than before. This time, my medicine (ASACOL) didnt work and had to go with something stronger.
Avatar f tn My brother had UC - I believe there were times when the prednisone and I think it was Asacol would force it into remission - which I believe is the best that can be hoped for.
Avatar m tn I have a NEW G.I. doc who keeps referring me to a colonoscopy and an MRCP before she decides to do anything but I've had a flare-up of UC for a month and need some relief. Today I saw a whole Asacol HD tablet excreted and the G.I.doc said "that's ok--it's still absorbed." Ok--so now I must be reasonable and ask a question as how is it absorbed when NONE OF IT--repeat, NONE OF IT---is degraded at all? This woman doesn't get it. Anyway, what should I do now?
Avatar n tn Is there a program where my son can get help with his Rx for asacol? He does not have insurance.
Avatar f tn s not) and also low iron and potassium. She is now taking the prednisone, imuran, asacol, aciphex, an iron supplement, probiotics and a multi vitamin. I hope this works, but now, someone today was telling me that she also has symptoms of celiac disease (they seem to be same as UC) and I dont' know if you can have both at the same time or not...if anyone knows or has any information, I would greatly appreciate it...
Avatar m tn The idea is to get off the steroids asap but make sure the bleeding is stopped. The other thing is to increase the Asacol right away to get the UC under control and adjust her dosage to manage it. If she is still having trouble then she needs to treat it from both ends, so get her GI to prescribe an enema nightly with her regular Asacol orally but it's very important to get her off the prednezone. It's bad taking it continuously.
89592 tn?1391274422 saw him on the 5th and called him yesterday to remind him of my liver concern and he said the asacol would be okay. I also have a question for Dr Schiano to get his thoughts. Thank you...I will do some more checking...I did get the pamphlets from my drugstore concerning the asacol and checked online. UGH....I just dont want to do more damage.
Avatar f tn She has been sick for 4 years and now she is on nothing except fish oil , probiotics, calicium, vitamin, and the most important l- glutamine.
1816263 tn?1316895122 I truly feel your pain. I was diagnosed with chron's a year ago. Since that time, it has been day to day. I have had nasty hemorrhoids (had to undergo a not so pleasant removal procedure), which has definitely made bowel control a challenge. The dr discovered a fistula during procedure, and implanted a drain to prevent infection. Some mornings I must also use the bathroom 3-4 times before leaving for work.
Avatar f tn ve stared fish oil and quercetin (natural anti-inflammatories), but should I accept the Asacol in an attempt to quell the autoantibody activity in my system and prevent a worse disease? I feel like a ticking time-bomb!
Avatar f tn been quite bad with a few painfull flareups lots of blood etc/ currently on pentasa and steriods at the moment/ started the pentasa last tuesday after a bad flareup/ just wonderd if any one could tell me there experiance on pentasa , and how long they took to work ?
Avatar n tn Had coloscopy in August-showed some mild inflammation in ilieum and rectal area-was put on Asacol. Asacol helped the rectal pain but RLQ pain continued. Went back to ED in Nov for severe RLQ pain. CT and bloodwork normal. I had changed from Asacol to Pentasa the week before and the rectal pain had come back-significant burning pain. Went to another doctor and had more bloodwork-borderline IBD tests. Went off Pentasa for a few days in Dec and had severe RLQ pain and right hand pain.
Avatar n tn Dosage should be properly followed and if u are experiencing digestive or renal problems, consult your doctor. Alcohol can increase the chances of a fatty liver and if u feel some type of pain and inflammation in your liver region, then consult your doctor.
277836 tn?1359666174 He should also prescribe asacol (2.4g daily) or similar- this should be continued daily- and is an ongoing drug to keep you in remission. If your symptoms are not so severe he should try the asacol, starting at 2.4mg and increasing to 4g if necessary. He can also try pentasa enema or pred enemas before putting you on the oral steroids. You need to get this under control ASAP, as it will get worse, if left untreated. Pred may be a necessary evil but only for short-term use.
1464587 tn?1307491605 Does anyone else get incredible inflammation in the intestines and chest/lungs from taking probiotics? This is the 2nd time its happened. The first time was with culterelle and it got so bad and to the point I was crying all day at work, almost couldn't walk and breath...... it subsided when I stopped taking them....... I take sustenex and do VERY well on it but it is not enough with taking azithromycin everyday. So I take an additional one now called something flora.....
