Asacol and imuran

Common Questions and Answers about Asacol and imuran

asacol

Avatar f tn Just recently his doctor took him off the pentasa and started him on Imuran (an immune suppressant). Since his disease gets quite severe this can possibly put him in remission for a number of years. It takes about 4 months to kick in. They have proven that taking Imuran early in your diagnosis can dramatically alter the progression of your disease. Good luck!
Avatar n tn I had UC for ten years until I perforated and had my colon removed and a J-pouch built 16 years ago. My son has UC and moved onto the Imuran last year. He did have some acne with the prednisone too. He has been in a wonderful remission this past year and is so enjoying feeling healthy. The only change he continues to make is to leave dairy alone as he realizes he is lacto intolerant. I hope you will get the same success. How I wish this was available to me back when I was ill.
Avatar f tn s not) and also low iron and potassium. She is now taking the prednisone, imuran, asacol, aciphex, an iron supplement, probiotics and a multi vitamin. I hope this works, but now, someone today was telling me that she also has symptoms of celiac disease (they seem to be same as UC) and I dont' know if you can have both at the same time or not...if anyone knows or has any information, I would greatly appreciate it...
Avatar f tn ve stared fish oil and quercetin (natural anti-inflammatories), but should I accept the Asacol in an attempt to quell the autoantibody activity in my system and prevent a worse disease? I feel like a ticking time-bomb!
Avatar n tn DO you have any diarrhea with pain around your belly button area or joint pain? I take Imuran and Asacol with the occasional prednisone and that seems to be working well. It's hard when doctors change I also recently just had to take my bx results to another gastro because my current one, he's great, he retired damn it! But it's almost like you have to start over with them it's so frustrating.
Avatar m tn My son has done well on Imuran and has learned to react quickly if he feels another flare coming on to get the prednisone &/or Imuran up and catch it before it gets a foothold. It will come with time. I ended up having the J-pouch surgery but not by choice. I had had UC for 10 years (this is 17 years ago) and my bowel perforated while in the hosptial. It has worked very well for me.
Avatar n tn she is suppose to be having her tonisls and her adnoiods out in 2 days and now they tell me something in her liver is up they have her on imuran, asacol, and prevacid. but her last test were fine and now they take it again before her surgery and don't know if they can do it . so have to go tomorrow to get more test done. can anyone help me understand what could be going on here..
Avatar n tn Hello all, I have Crohns disease, and for about a year have been having some abnormally high liver function tests. The Dr. is changing my medications a bunch (off Asacol, reduced Imuran, etc), and I have abstained from alcohol use (not heavy drinker, but partied hard when I did), but my liver counts have not decreased significantly. I am wondering if my daily Marijuana smoking could be causing the elevated liver functions, rather than the medications or something else.
902019 tn?1249861414 I have however on this site heard from other AIP patients who have done well on Imuran and my gastroenterologist agreed that under the circumstances it was worth a try. I began Imuran in Oct-09 and my liver function tests (which were starting to climb yet again) have on their own ~ without prednisone ~ returned to just about normal in 2 mths! My question (finally..) concerns Imuran and side effects. For those of you on this drug, how have you been doing??
Avatar f tn For the first month and I half I was moody and tired all the time. I felt so hungry and I ended up gaining about 60lbs, apparently most of it was water from the prednisone. Everything has precautions, but I think if you're doctor is willing to try it, it's worth it. I think it's a lot better then prednisone since the weight and insecurities don't play a factor as much. You also have to remember that Humira may not be the cure all medication.
680313 tn?1249312403 I am in the same boat. I tried imuran, after a week the nausea was so bad I started vomitting and couldn't stop. I then went into a crohns flare up and when it was all said and done within in two days my potassuim levels had dropped to the point where I was lucky not to be in the hospital. I tried Humira and was allerigic (hives), tried Remicade it did nothing.
Avatar f tn My doctor convinced me that I was severely depressed and put me on anti-depressants of which those actually made me a zombie at times and very depressed at others so I stopped taking them and just dealt with my issues on my own. I continued to have symptoms and issues which I had no idea about to include severe gas, stomach pain, & very embarrassingly accidents in my pants. I was so humiliated and embarrassed but thankfully this didn't actually take place in front of people.
Avatar n tn My question is, is there a link bewteen imuran and heart failure? I have found that imuran can cause a increased heart rate, but could it be responsible for these episodes? Thank you for any help you may be able to give in this matter.
Avatar f tn My doctor put me on Asacol and I had horrible uncontrollable diarrhea. I took it for a few months and decided constipation was less painful and embarressing than diarrhea. You may try drinking Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with honey. It's a natural remedy for reducing inflammation and it works.
483733 tn?1326798446 The metabolites of Imuran called 6-TG and 6-MMP can be directly measured in the blood. Higher 6-TG levels correlate with clinical response to Imuran but also the risk of bone marrow suppression. Higher 6-MMP levels correlate with liver toxicity. Special blood tests may be (and should be) requested from Prometheus Laboratories to help the doctor determine the proper dose. This is one drug you don't 'guess' at. You need to know whether or not your son can properly metabolize it.
Avatar m tn I enjoy the Lialda because I was taking 3 pills three times a day with Asacol and now I only take 4 pills once a day with Lialda. I haven't been on the Lialda for very long, but so far the results are good. I'm not sure that it is better than Asacol, but I think it is easier and equal in performance. You might ask your doctor if they have any prescription cards for Lialda. My doctor was given cards from Lialda, which you can use with your insurance.
Avatar n tn I realize you all are busy, but I would be immensely grateful if you would give a few thoughts regarding some matters of great concern to me. I have autoimmune hepatitis - 22 YO male. Never drank alcohol, taken drugs, or done anything that would have exposed me to hepatitis C (blood tests confirmed). Per my biopsy of about 18 months ago, I am in stage 2 bridging fibrosis - although my LFTs have been elevated since then.
Avatar f tn I started Asacol almost two weeks ago, and it worked very well after a couple of days, but after almost two weeks, I got very weak, dizzy spells, fatigue, like the flu. It's been five days, and most of the time I need to lay down. I couldn't go to work today. When does it stop? I stopped the medication four days ago. It was for colitis.
Avatar n tn for 8 years or so. However, I am hoping to get pregnant and so my Dr. slowly weaned me off the imuran and now I am on prednisone 20mg. My last dose of immuarn was tuesday--25mg (down from 100mg). Now my dr. wants me to wait 2-3 months to start trying to get pregnant! Does anyone know anything about that--that it takes 2-3 months for imuran to get out of the body? Has anyone had any experience with trying to get pregnant and/or having a baby with AIH and being on either of these meds??
456090 tn?1259694837 I am off and on Flagyl for the infections I get but that is usually only for 7-10 day increments. I have been on Imuran (100mg 2x a day) and since November 2007 and varying doses of Prednisone since June 2007. However, I started having severe relapses with the diarrhea, nausea, lethargey, mouth sores and severe arthritis so they upped my Prednisone and added Celebrex and Ultracet for the pain, stiffness and swelling with the arthritis.
Avatar f tn After many tests and colonoscopies I was hospitalised and immediately given steroid treatment, I was then put on Asacol and 6-mp. I was ok and on the road to recover for some time after this however I have had 3 relapses since 2 of which have been this year alone and to date I have had 5 courses of steroids. My doctor increased my 6-mp which as caused my hair to fall out. I am now back on steroids and about to start a 12 week course of Methotrexate injections.....
Avatar n tn I am a 27 year old female who has autoimmune hepatitis and colitis. I have been on imuran (azothiaprine) for about 4 years and that has held my liver enzymes in complete check and I've been fine. I would now very much like to become pregnant, but my high-risk OBGYN has warned me of the risks of being on imuran while trying to concieve.
Avatar m tn Try to stay away from dairy, alcohol, grains (have rice instead). If you can figure out what triggered the flare, that would be helpful so you know to avoid it in the future.
507935 tn?1217359454 ran a toxicity test on the imuran in my body and it came back really high. Turns out it was toxifying my body and he switched me to a different drug. I had all my energy back w/in 2 days. Now I am on 6 MP. Whenever I get that run down feeling though it reminds me of how I felt on the imuran. I was on 150 mg as well of the imuran. 6 MP is basically the same drug but made by a different manufacturer. But if my Dr. puts me up to 150 mg I get high levels of toxicity w/the 6 mp as well.
Avatar n tn I have noticed that my asacol is not breaking down and is being passed in my stool! Is their a reason for this? What can/should I do?
507935 tn?1217359454 I've always thought you could just come off imuran. My Dr. had to switch me off imuran on to 6 mp and I just stopped taking it that day, within a week it was completely out of my system...Hope this helps...
Avatar f tn Well I joined the Army about a year and a half ago but to get in I couldent have anything wrong with me so when I had my physical I lied about having IBD, the month before I left for basic training I took myself off my perscribed Imuran and just decided to see what happened. I did consult my doctor about it first and she said that if I chose to do this that it was okay with her because I was young healty and had been in remission for around a year.
420686 tn?1219632592 After having her, I had CD and went to a GI doctor and got diagnosed with Crohns. With medicine (ASACOL) all my symptons went away in about 4 months.. Then I got pregant with my son in 2005 and I had a great pregnancy.. no problems, no symptons of Crohns. The day I gave birth to him, my Crohns came back with a vengance. All my symptons came back and they were worse than before. This time, my medicine (ASACOL) didnt work and had to go with something stronger.
