Common Questions and Answers about Asacol and ibs

asacol

Avatar f tn I recently had 3 months of chronic diarrhea and digestive upset (I have a 10-yr history of mild IBS-D and lactose intolerance), and got a full battery of tests. The only abnormality was microscopic colitis on one of the colonoscopy biopsies. All other tests and antibodies were negative, SED rate was normal, liver and kidney chemistries normal, C-reactive protein normal, no anemia, CBC normal, etc. Doc wants me to start Asacol but the side effects seem worse than my mild diarrhea.
1446077 tn?1284510191 I have been on antispasmodics now for over 2 years and my symptoms are no better and I am in pain daily... I have loose stools and vomit a lot from time to time, I have been told I have to stay on Omeprazole for life (oh the joys) For my bowels, my recent scans and cameras are all negative for crohns but the symptos in my doctors words are "typical of Crohns" yet he treats me for IBS with meds that do not work..... Could the specialist be wrong?

Avatar n tn Welcome to the IBS community! This is not normal and I highly recommend you see your doctor about this ASAP and get some testing done.
Avatar m tn Is is possible to be mis-diagnosed with IBS while actually having Crohn's. I received all my Dr's notes recently and he noted that I had received treatment that I have never tried also. Thank you for you help and suggestions.
Avatar n tn It has now been 8 months of frequent bloody/mucousy stools and no relief. I have been on Asacol, Sulfasalazine, and most recently Lialda which I had a bad reaction to. Nothing has improved my symtoms. I recently started seeing a new GI and she retested me and I am positive for C diff. She also tested a ANCA-IBD P-ANCA Titer recently that came back negative.
Avatar m tn I enjoy the Lialda because I was taking 3 pills three times a day with Asacol and now I only take 4 pills once a day with Lialda. I haven't been on the Lialda for very long, but so far the results are good. I'm not sure that it is better than Asacol, but I think it is easier and equal in performance. You might ask your doctor if they have any prescription cards for Lialda. My doctor was given cards from Lialda, which you can use with your insurance.
Avatar n tn DO you have any diarrhea with pain around your belly button area or joint pain? I take Imuran and Asacol with the occasional prednisone and that seems to be working well. It's hard when doctors change I also recently just had to take my bx results to another gastro because my current one, he's great, he retired damn it! But it's almost like you have to start over with them it's so frustrating.
Avatar f tn I started Asacol almost two weeks ago, and it worked very well after a couple of days, but after almost two weeks, I got very weak, dizzy spells, fatigue, like the flu. It's been five days, and most of the time I need to lay down. I couldn't go to work today. When does it stop? I stopped the medication four days ago. It was for colitis.
Avatar n tn I always have white and light yellow mucus after I have a bowel movement, diarrhea, or after passing alot of gas. I think I have to rush to the bathroom and then all that comes out is bunches of the mucus, stringy like mucus and other foreign looking mucousy stuff. Is this something I need to ask my doctor about--its it IBS? Thanks for any insight you can provide.
Avatar f tn So I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis just about two years ago and I'm 9 weeks 1 day today, and I've noticed my symptoms of uc are flaring up again, even with being on asacol hd. This poses an issue, because I need to eat healthy for baby. Normally I can adjust what I eat and everything balances out after a few days, but with the pregnancy going on not much of anything sounds good, especially uc safe foods.
Avatar m tn Try to stay away from dairy, alcohol, grains (have rice instead). If you can figure out what triggered the flare, that would be helpful so you know to avoid it in the future.
Avatar n tn I have noticed that my asacol is not breaking down and is being passed in my stool! Is their a reason for this? What can/should I do?
420686 tn?1219632592 After having her, I had CD and went to a GI doctor and got diagnosed with Crohns. With medicine (ASACOL) all my symptons went away in about 4 months.. Then I got pregant with my son in 2005 and I had a great pregnancy.. no problems, no symptons of Crohns. The day I gave birth to him, my Crohns came back with a vengance. All my symptons came back and they were worse than before. This time, my medicine (ASACOL) didnt work and had to go with something stronger.
Avatar f tn My brother had UC - I believe there were times when the prednisone and I think it was Asacol would force it into remission - which I believe is the best that can be hoped for.
Avatar f tn For the last 5 years I've been having severe abdominal attacks for a better word for it. It came within a half to one hour of eating and usually does. I get real loud bowel sounds on my left side of my abdomen. Then cramping starts and I feel like I'm going to have diarrhea. Before I get the the restroom my lips start going numb, my face feels hot and then depending on the outcome I either pass out on the toilet or I'm doubled over in gut wrenching pain.
Avatar m tn I have a NEW G.I. doc who keeps referring me to a colonoscopy and an MRCP before she decides to do anything but I've had a flare-up of UC for a month and need some relief. Today I saw a whole Asacol HD tablet excreted and the G.I.doc said "that's ok--it's still absorbed." Ok--so now I must be reasonable and ask a question as how is it absorbed when NONE OF IT--repeat, NONE OF IT---is degraded at all? This woman doesn't get it. Anyway, what should I do now?
Avatar n tn Is there a program where my son can get help with his Rx for asacol? He does not have insurance.
Avatar m tn The idea is to get off the steroids asap but make sure the bleeding is stopped. The other thing is to increase the Asacol right away to get the UC under control and adjust her dosage to manage it. If she is still having trouble then she needs to treat it from both ends, so get her GI to prescribe an enema nightly with her regular Asacol orally but it's very important to get her off the prednezone. It's bad taking it continuously.
89592 tn?1391274422 saw him on the 5th and called him yesterday to remind him of my liver concern and he said the asacol would be okay. I also have a question for Dr Schiano to get his thoughts. Thank you...I will do some more checking...I did get the pamphlets from my drugstore concerning the asacol and checked online. UGH....I just dont want to do more damage.
Avatar f tn Well in 2007, I was very sick I could not eat, I was going to the doctor constantly and dismissed saying I had GERDS, then IBS. My upper GI series X-ray was normal therefore dismissed as having IBS and was given miralax. Soon after I become very sick where I could not eat ANYTHING. I threw up everything and was nauseas with diarrhea that alternated with constipation. I lost 10 lbs in a week. I finally went for a second opinion.
572521 tn?1217226838 b which creates lesions and the inside bactira attacks and settles by taking antibiotic, one another doctor says i have ibs which causes small lesion and infection is gone after taking antibiotic, i m in worst problem have no idea wt to do now
Avatar f tn been quite bad with a few painfull flareups lots of blood etc/ currently on pentasa and steriods at the moment/ started the pentasa last tuesday after a bad flareup/ just wonderd if any one could tell me there experiance on pentasa , and how long they took to work ?
Avatar n tn Had coloscopy in August-showed some mild inflammation in ilieum and rectal area-was put on Asacol. Asacol helped the rectal pain but RLQ pain continued. Went back to ED in Nov for severe RLQ pain. CT and bloodwork normal. I had changed from Asacol to Pentasa the week before and the rectal pain had come back-significant burning pain. Went to another doctor and had more bloodwork-borderline IBD tests. Went off Pentasa for a few days in Dec and had severe RLQ pain and right hand pain.
Avatar n tn Dosage should be properly followed and if u are experiencing digestive or renal problems, consult your doctor. Alcohol can increase the chances of a fatty liver and if u feel some type of pain and inflammation in your liver region, then consult your doctor.
