Is it possible to become addicted to over the counter medications? My 75 year old mother recently moved to my town so that I could help her financially, etc. I have become very concerned about the amount of excederine, prilosec, nasal spray, aleve, and other antacid medicines that she takes. She has a history of bleeding ulcers, she smokes about 2 packs of cigarettes a week, high blood pressure, and other ailments of old age. I didn't realize that she was taking so much of this medicine.
I used to have them prescribed, but the prescription cost on the nhs was higher then buying them over the counter. .. I normally have zertec or cetrizeane (I think one of them is the same as pyrtine) ... my first appointment isn't for over a week yet, but.this is on my long list of questions to ask when I get there. An over the counter medication is any medication that can be purchased without a prescription "over the counter", but does not make the medication safer and needs to be taken according to the directions on the package and there is a need to be more vigilent and take into consideration individual health, the benefits versus the risks and potential interactions with any prescribed meidcations.
yes yes, I am clean from Vicoden, Antidepresants but still am using a sleep aid, have been using over the counter meds for sleep since the 80's then went to prescription sleep aid and now I only sleep 3 or 4 hours using them. I am going to go off them soon. My Dr would like to see me wait until Jan just because I came off two meds this year and had surgery's but please don't go to prescription sleep aids I think it is harder to get off them than OCT.
s how I felt. You probably need some help like I did. Cortisone cream - over the counter and a antihistamine. That's how I felt. I was going crazy.......
Use an over-the-counter (OTC) decongestant combined with an anti-inflammatory analgesic (pain reliever) like Ibuprofen. However, you should not use decongestants for more than 5-7 days at a time. Avoid indigestible, spicy, foods and meats. Eat simply of wholesome food. Obtain needed out-of-door exercise, sunbaths, and swimming. It can also be treated using an antihistamine nasal spray. Antihistamine like benadryl works by blocking your immune system's response to the allergen.
Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine (reduces inflammation, helps with drippy nose and eyes from allergies, etc) Coricidin is an over the counter OTC drug. The DSM-IV is system for measuring the risk of substance abuse or for assessing mental disorders. You may be thinking of classification of narcotics? or pregnancy drug classification? OTC drugs are not classified.
Direct clinical examination and complete medical history are important in reaching a diagnosis. Over-the-counter antihistamine may also help with the itching, especially if taken at night.

Mucinex just thins the mucus...an antihistamine will help prevent the mucus from being produced in the first place. Try another antihistamine...they each work differently and another one might work better for you.
