I've used both (I'm on daily probiotics and just recently was on antibiotics for pneumonia) and didn't really have many issues. The antibiotics gave me worse diarrhea but it clears up after time - nothing in regards to adverse effects being used together. In reality anything can have an adverse affect with any medication. Even just taking OTC pain meds. All things are given on a risk/benefits scale, and he seems to think this one will work best for you.

I was having some stomach irritation and loose stool, and after consuming some lactose and fructose heavy food at a conference, my bloating returned and my IBS was worse than it was prior to the antibiotics. I then took a course of Cipro, 100 mg twice daily for a week. I also took Xifaxan simultaneously for the IBS 500 mg 3 times daily for 10 days. The Cipro seemed to help the joint pain but the two compounded the GI symptoms.

Mayo cant explain how their diagnosis of Pelvic floor disorder would have been cured by XIfaxan. Because of Xifaxan I traveled to Australia to try fecal bacteriotherapy but it did not help me either. A doctor in Univ Chicago believes (a theory) I have an infection in my colon but because Ive taken 5 other antibiotics that didnt help me at all I wonder if that is true either.

I was recently prescribed Xifaxan when at my last HepC checkup, I told my doctor and Lactulose he had prescribed for me wasn't strong enough, I guess you'd say, but when we tried increasing the dosage of Lactulose, I started having "accidents" necessitating wearing diapers. Well, now I'm more disgusted. I was going to start the Xifaxan tonight but first I always read the insert of any drug and do a little research on line.

Hello Everyone, I was diagnosed with bacterial overgrowth a few days ago and my doctor prescribed Xifaxan 550 mg 3 times a day for 10 days. A pharmacists told me that this dose is higher than the allowed limit for this medication and that it could give me really bad side effects. Has anyone else here been prescribed such a high dose of Xifaxan for SIBO? Did it help? Were the side effects really bad? Thank you in advance.

GI dic said he suspects IBS. He did find bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine and gave me Xifaxan. I tried it a couple of weeks ago bd got sick. Took 2pills yesterday, could not sleep all night, sweaty and bloating, been sick all day and getting nauseated. All I really have is Simethicone/Mylanta liquid and Xanax. Called the ER doc and he told me to stop it.

I had extreme diarrhea everyday and sometimes vomiting for 7 weeks before i was prescribed Xifaxan. I immediately started feeling better after the first dose. About two weeks after Xifaxan, i woke up with diarrhea again but just for a day. I was told to take Florastor, i am. After that i was constipated for 6 days until today that i have been going to the bathroom all day. First it was normal, now its diarrhea. Im pretty sure its from being constipated for so long and my slow digestion.

I have read about Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, which is treated with Rifaximin (Xifaxan) and Neomycin, normally alongside strong probiotics to minimise damage to any good bacteria in the gut. Would you recommend that I try antibiotics?

Dr tested for everything including massive blood tests and stool samples, endoscopy, barium xray and everything came out fine except that i had slow digestion, he sais it was probably from my diabetes and that it might have been causing bacterial overgrowth in my intestines. He put me on Xifaxan 9 day treatment which is an antibiotic that will kill the bacteria in the intestines. Within the next day my diarrhea was completely gone and i felt much better!!

I see my zgI doc today and I know he is going to tell me to try the Xifaxan again. I was so sick the next day,mdried my mouth and throat even more and had blood in my sputum. All these drugs are causing problems. Had to stop Dicyclomine and Kevsin due to arrhythmia. I am at the end of my rope feeling like this.

Anybody taking Xifaxan 550 for Hepatic Encephalopathy? Results? Price? ...

s taken a 3 day course of xifaxan (finished in the evening of 2/18) and does seem better. He has an appetite, has never had a fever or diarrhea during this episode. Since finishing the xifaxan, his days are much better but the gassiness seems to be coming back late afternoon/early evening. I don't know what to do!

SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) more likely. Get an evaluation by a gastroenterologist to see if they will start you on Xifaxan. Dude, I've been through the same thing so I get it.

Has he prescribed Xifaxan (rifaximin) also? It really works wonders for many of us without the side effects of lactulose and kristalose. Take care.

Thank you for the Xifaxan program information. I am taking both Lactalose and Xifaxan (the latter just once a day since I only have 1 bottle with 60 tablets). One note: You asked " Have you thought of how progressive liver disease will affect your family as you become more and more disabled?" Was that a rhetorical question? And do you really think I am not aware how precarious having no insurance leaves me?
