Common Questions and Answers about Antibiotics for impetigo

antibiotics

Avatar f tn So, impetigo isn't really something you treat with over the counter products. It typically requires a prescription from a doctor of a topical antibiotic (like a cream you put on) or a pill if it is systemic (through body). It's basically a staph or strep infection of the skin. And it IS contagious. It's important he receive prompt attention (especially since you are mentioning his eye lid involved) but it needs to be a prescription of antibiotics from a doctor.
Avatar n tn Hi Are you taking any medications for this? With the way you describe the skin condition, this sounds like impetigo. "Impetigo starts as a red sore that quickly ruptures, oozes for a few days and then forms a yellowish-brown crust that looks like honey or brown sugar. The disease is highly contagious, and scratching or touching the sores is likely to spread the infection to other parts of the body as well as to other people." Source:http://www.mayoclinic.
Avatar n tn Differin is especially effective when used in conjunction with oral treatment such as antibiotics or anti-androgens (for females only).
1562256 tn?1384459598 Hey my 6 year old child when she was a baby use to get Impetigo all the time... Last time she had it was when she was about 4. Well I think this is Impetigo. Tell me what you think. It like showed up in one day.
Avatar n tn t remember when they developed first but I think it was as a result of an impetigo infection 3 years ago (which i took oral antibiotics for and cleared up). However not all the areas affected by the impetigo left marks. Since that initial impetigo infection I've had it a few times more (unusual I think?) but no scarring etc. occurred any of those times. They don't seem to be scars as my facial hair is growing through them.
Avatar f tn My daughter had impetigo several weeks back. She was treated with a cream and oral antibiotics. The area has healed. However, she has and pigmented discolored area exactly the same size as where her impetigo spot was. Will this go away? How long will it take? Is this normal and is there anything we can do to help this area return to its natural skin color.
Avatar m tn 2 weeks ago, I was diagnosed with Impetigo and Folliculitis, most likely caused by the same bacteria living on my body. The doctor diagnosed the Impetigo by looking at it, and he prescribed me Doxycycline and Muporocin (SP?) After a few days, the Impetigo began to clear up. It was in the left corner of my lip. There is still a bit of redness there, but nothing else and no irritation. The folliculitis was on my head, back, different areas of my thighs, and occasionally my chest.
Avatar n tn Anyway, it turns out to be impetigo! (Not very fun!) I have a prescription for anitbiotics and a cream. It is very uncomfortable, and from what I understand, highly contagious. Do you have any advice about minimizing the spread? I'm wearing clean clothes, and using clean sheets, clean towels, etc. I've also been avoiding makeup and scratching the sores but every time I accidentally bump one I'm afraid it's going to spread!
Avatar n tn Hello, It sounds like summer sores or impetigo. I hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing or if you have any additional doubts.Kind regards.
Avatar f tn So a few days ago me and my girlfriend of about 7 months went out for a night together and stayed in a hotel. I already had very swollen lymph nodes on my neck. I also had some small open cuts on my face from pimples that hadn't fully healed. I woke up with all the acne spots on my face red and very sore, throughout the day they got worse.
Avatar f tn I have impetigo and have been treating it with Mupirocin ointment. It was continuing to spread so I went back to the doctor and was prescribed Doxycycline. I've been on the oral antibiotics for 48 hours but still have little blisters popping up on my hands and arms (and just noticed today a couple on my stomach). They're little and stay little (about the size of a grain of rice), not like the large ones I had on my face and neck that showed up and became pea sized in a single day.
Avatar n tn I just recently noticed a small area inside my right nostril that appears to either be impetigo or a cold sore. This looks like a cold sore, but after reading on internet, it sounds like odds are it is more likely impetigo. It started as a pimple like lesion and looks more like a flat/slightly raised brown crusty lesion? Please help me figure this out, or give me more info on what this could be, so I know whether to go right in to see a doctor. Thank you.
Avatar m tn Ive been on severial courses of antibiotics and have been using a fuciden cream religiously for the past month three times a day. The rash that is on my right eyelid and behind my right ear will clear up and then come back it is very very mild right now with the use if the fucidin but its still there. Anything i can do?
Avatar n tn Hello, The typical treatment of folliculitis is by topical and oral antibiotics. Impetigo is a highly contagious superficial bacterial skin infection. Primarily caused by Staphylococcus aureus and sometimes by Streptococcus pyogenes. Topical and oral antibiotics are the treatment of choice. My sincere advice would be to consult a dermatologist and get prescribed oral antibiotics also because sometimes topical therapy with antibiotic creams is not sufficient for the treatment.
Avatar m tn In October 2009, I caught a very bad case of impetigo, and was given antibiotics to combat it. In a couple weeks it cleared up, but in less than a week after treatment my skin broke out with these oozing, golden crusts once again. The dermatologist I was seeing prescribed all sorts of antibiotics to try to cure me, but all served to be only temporarily effective. All the drugs probably did my body more harm than good in the long run.
Avatar n tn My son is 3 years old and has had chronic impetigo for about 8 months or more. He gets it in the same place on his right cheek. He has been on a bunch of oral antibiotics that didn't work!! There were creams that didn't work!!! I took him to a dermitologist that gave him a steroid and iodine cream that cleared it up (not completely) for a while. There was nothing on his face last night when we went to bed. This morning it was the size of a silver dollar and seeping!!
Avatar n tn since probably November, but i didnt realize it was impetigo until about the middle of december. I took keflex for 10 days and it disappeared. Then I had an allergic reaction to an acne product i have used for 10 years, and contracted it again. I just finished my second round of antibiotics about 5 days ago. I had two pimples on my face, but now they are forming those familiar yellow crustings of impetigo. I should say, I am 20, i live in a house with 27 other girls, and i go to college.
Avatar m tn It is dry, red and tender, almost dime size and round. He has had these for a week and each began at size of a pencile tip. What could this be?
Avatar n tn Oral antibiotics may be needed. Impetigo is contagious. I suggest frequent handwashing for everyone in the household.Avoid sharing towels , clothes for the children. Avoid touching the lesions unnecessarily. Keep the children from the touching the lesions. Keep us posted for anything.
Avatar f tn Your child should be kept out of school until he has been on treatment for 24 hours with oral antibiotics or 48 hours with antibiotic ointment alone. For mild impetigo treated with an antibiotic ointment, the child can continue to attend day care or school if the sore is covered with a Band-Aid." Do kee us posted on your doubts and progress.
Avatar f tn They have developed other antibiotics to treat it. However, they are stronger antibiotics and can be harder to take. Staph in general (MRSA or not) causes boils, impetigo, furuncles and mostly other skin and wound problems. Sometimes eye infections and other issues. Sometimes with impetigo you can get a mixture of staph and strep in the wound and you get a crusty sore which is easily spread. It also can produce blisters at first then become crusty. What does your infection look like?
Avatar n tn If the symptoms are not controlled by topical antibiotics, then oral antibiotics may be needed.Pls consult your dermatologist and discuss this with him. Hope it helps.Take care and regards.
Avatar m tn Earlier this afternoon (july 7th), i ended up going to urgent care and the doctor said i had impetigo, and he wrote me up a prescription for antibiotic ointment (Mupirocin Ointment USP, 2%) and sent me on my way. I still have some questions though! 1.) i read that impetigo is highly contagious. How contagious is it? i always wash my hands after i apply the ointment, and I don't touch the area at all, except when im putting the ointment on. 2.
