Common Questions and Answers about Anorexia nervosa eating disorder

anorexia

Avatar f tn Though technically, part of the clinical diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa is losing 15 percent or more of what your normal body weight should be, you do not need to be super thin in order to have an eating disorder. Most of what an eating disorder, such as Anorexia, consists of is the emotional/mental aspect.. being scared of gaining weight, thinking you're fat when you really are healthy, starving yourself or severely limiting food quantity or types of foods, etc.
Avatar f tn I tend to be the same as leftcoastchick - doctor is the person you need, I know anorexia needs serious help and counselling but id also wonder if it is anorexia which has fairly specific symptoms and behaviours as opposed to not eating which is indeed possibly an attempt at suicide. Is the person physically ill?
Avatar f tn I'm 33 years old and I haven't ever had an eating disorder. But just recently I have started to get sick to mystomach when I eat meat. Any kind of meat, chicken, red meat, pork, fish you name it. Am I forcibly becoming a vegetarian? Or is there something seriously wrong with me? Am I becoming bulimic/anorexic? Please soothe my nerves.
Avatar f tn However, in my 28 year of clinical experience, I understand it as a subset of Anorexia Nervosa. This is my professional opinion. The underlying dynamics are quite similar to what we have seen in anorexia for years. It's only in the recent years as our society has focused on pure, organic, and raw foods has this new obessive compulsive form of restriction emerged and is has now been coined orthorexia.
179856 tn?1333547362 t know anything about Portia. I had no idea she suffered from anorexia nervosa. I assumed she had anorexia - eating disorder from any cause - and that is why I assumed the anorexia resulted from her cirrhosis. Now, that I have read the gossip/Oprah stuff I lean more towards Willy's opinion.

Avatar m tn Is she scared to gain weight? Is she obsessive about her body? If so, these are signs of anorexia nervosa. Sometimes when someone doesn't eat for a while the stomach gets smaller and a person can feel full faster. This can happen even for a person who does not show signs of or have an eating disorder. Is the reason she hasn't been eating much lately because she feels sick, or does she feel sick because she hasn't been eating much lately?
Avatar f tn An eating disorder can be when you "don't have control" over your eating habits, or when you have obsessive control over your eating habits. If you have eating behavior not clearly defined as anorexia or bulimia, its called Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified or EDNOS. I want to tell you that you are a very strong person to recognize this and that you want to change it. That is the first step.
Avatar n tn t believe that they actually have one. Not eating and throwing up sounds like the purging type of anorexia nervosa. Only 69 pounds, as ur friend said, would definitely characterize u in that area.
Avatar m tn //www.webmd.com/mental-health/eating-disorders/anorexia-nervosa/mental-health-anorexia-nervosa#1. Diagnosis of eating disorders requires you to step outside of it and ask for help. The best place to start may be to have a physical and express your eating practices and concerns over your weight at that time. If your physician agrees you have an unhealth relationship with food, they may suggest the next step for help.
Avatar f tn Self evaluation is unduly influenced by body shape and weight. The disturbance does not occur exclusively during episodes of anorexia nervosa. Type Purging type: During the current episode of bulimia nervosa, the person has regularly engaged in self-induced vomiting or the misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or enemas.
Avatar n tn Anorexia is an eating disorder where the victim refuses to eat in the fear of gaining weight. They see themselves as being overly fat, when really they are just underweight. The victim may sometimes purge if forced to eat. A person with Anorexia cannot cope with it themselves. They require counsling and doctors to help them through it. There is always recovery though. I have a friend right now that is suffering from Anorexia Nervosa.
Avatar f tn I have never had anorexia but a good friend of mine did and she went through the same problem of becoming a binge eater after recovering from anorexia. One thing I want you to remember is that both anorexia and binge eating are eating disorders. One is not better then the other and both can take a toll on your health. Your weight seems to actually be pretty healthy for your height but if you are unhappy because your weight gain is not through healthy ways, I can understand your concern.
Avatar n tn This girl that is 17 that i talked about also has an eating disorder called anorexia nervosa and it is causing her a great deal of problems. Passin out, body tremors, illness.
Avatar m tn Celexa is used to treat depression. This drug is also used to treat eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa) and other mental conditions (obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder). All the other medications you mentioned are from the same family(SSRI's).
Avatar n tn Unintentional and unexplained weight loss is definitely not good. One possibility is that you have an eating disorder. In which case taking help from a doctor specialized in treating eating disorders will help. There are many other causes like worms in stool, depression, anorexia nervosa, AIDS, cancers especially colon cancers, drug abuse, infections and loss of appetite.
Avatar f tn Today, I finally came to terms with my partners disorder. It's been eating at me for nearly a year now. I have a pretty good feeling that I know where her problems are stemming from but I don't know how to get her to accept that she has a serious condition and to accept the appropriate treatment. Can somebody who has previously been in my situation give me some advice?
Avatar m tn Orthorexia nervosa is a sister disease of anorexia (i looked it up). it says that a person stops eating several nutritional factors because they think it is bad for them. it is progressing, mostly starting with not eating nutrion that has fat or glucose in them. I was wondering if anybody here has heard or knows anyone with this condition (better explanation on wikipedia). And I am wondering where i can check if she might use pills to stimulate diarhea.
Avatar n tn I suffered from anorexia nervosa when I was 13 and 14 years old. After the 2nd hospitalization, I decided the only way to avoid relapse was to not diet at all. Following that realization, I recovered and have a lived a very full life. I am married with 2 children and have held successively more senior positions with a Fortune 500 company. Approximately a month ago, I had a very severe stomach virus that my daughter had picked up at school. Since that time, I have had absolutely no appetite.
Avatar f tn Can someone give me some advice to overcome 'anorexia'(that what my doctor says). I guess you can say im jealous of my big brother because he can eat anything without getting fat. Which is really annoying since I always watch what I eat and I still am fat. My big brother is 17 and he 6,4 and only weighs 122 pounds. Im 15 and 5,5 and weigh 92.5 pounds. And believe me when I say my brother doesn't have a eating disorder.
Avatar n tn Reminds me of Karen Carpenter who died from heart failure caused from her eating disorder. Not eating properly affects more than your weight. It affects all the organs of your body. Please check with your doctor. I hope you can find a balance between feeling good about yourself and feeling healthy too.
Avatar f tn Recently i suffered from anorexia nervosa with then developed into me binge eating which then ended in bulimia nervosa. I am aware of what is happening to me, but as it has happened in a short space of time (2years) i feel a little lost. I live in the UK and it is extremly hard to get help as docotors do not see me as underweight. But everyone knows that there is something wrong.
701581 tn?1279136038 It may be the doctor in Miami felt the previous positive ANA test(s) was/were sufficient (provided that isn't one of the things that came out negative in latter testing?) There are doctors that are concerned about costs when ordering tests, so perhaps she was being judiciously frugal when it came to ANA? I think if you feel you have the symptoms of lupus, it is worth pursuing getting that re-tested- to see what comes out as two out of three- positive or negative for the illness.
Avatar f tn I'm no expert but I am 15 and I have anxiety and an eating disorder. If your daughter is wise it's easy hiding having an eating disorder. Depression aides the eating disorder (or just makes her feel like not eating). Her trying hard to get protein also goes into having an eting disorder so she can think straight and isnt dizzy all the time...also cutting out meat. It could be medical and an ED, but I'm betting she has one...
Avatar f tn One possibility is that you have an eating disorder. In which case taking help from a doctor specialized in treating eating disorders will help. There are many other causes like worms in stool, depression, anorexia nervosa, AIDS, cancers especially colon cancers, drug abuse, infections and loss of appetite. Loss of appetite can again be due to certain medications, drug abuse, depression, AIDS, acute and chronic infections, cancers and hypothyroidism.
