Common Questions and Answers about Angiogram iodine allergy

angiogram

Avatar f tn I am scared stupid to have a cardiac cath due to my iodine allergy. I am told I will be given benadryl for a few days prior. I don't trust this. I looked up alternative drugs for the iodine contrast and was horrified to find that the one used for MRI, MRA, and CT scans could cause a lethal illness of the kidney to which there is NO treatment or Cure. Is there no other way to assess my heart vessels?
Avatar f tn Hi there, Glad to read here that your Angio was normal. The rash can be from an Iodine allergy/sensitivity - they use Iodine as contrast material. I am allergic/sensitive to Iodine. You should try OTC Allergex or Celestimine tabs. Hope it goes away soon.
1469458 tn?1287320290 What could I do to see if this shellfish allergy is also linked to his obvious iodine allergy?
Avatar f tn I do not know about iodized salt as we need that, and I think that is a total different king of iodine that doctor's use to sterilize the skin-- which is the iodine you need to avoid.
Avatar n tn Allergies are common in patient’s after a CAT scan, because of sensitivity to iodine, certain medicines which form the dye. Allergy due to iodine is not the same as the allergy due to shell fish. Because in shell fish there are components like tropomyosin, which have a propensity to cause allergy in certain people and is completely different to what causes allergy due to iodine. Best.
Avatar f tn My doctor has all my levels correct but I still have morning slugginess and the afternoon slump and I cannot seem to lose any weight. I am not sure if my doctor even knows about my iodine allergy, I will tell him at my next appt. in June. In the mean time does anyone know if I should be using iodized salt or is that the same as my other iodine allergies? Is there a connection between my iodine allergy and my hypothyroidism? Any help would be appreciated.
Avatar n tn Can an invidividual with a seafood/shellfish allergy that is known to have anaphylactic shock take a dietary supplement with Wakame™ seaweed 10% Fucoxanthin? Thanks for your response.
Avatar f tn I have never eaten any form of seaweed since. Some vitamins I bought have kelp as the source of iodine. Is this risky for me to use as kelp is a form of seaweed?
Avatar f tn any thoughts from anybody out there that has had an angiogram before?
Avatar n tn The best way to find out whether you will now show an allergy towards this small amount of iodine is by allergy tests.Skin ***** tests can be tried. In this a small amount of allergen is introduced in the skin of the forearm. Then a positive reaction consisting a red erythematous patch is noted. If it develops, then that person is allergic to the allergen being tested. Confirmatory diagnosis is by blood tests like RAST.
Avatar m tn The HSG uses an iodine contrast dye that is injected into the uterus. My gyn is aware that I have Grave disease and am allergy to shellfish. I was euthyroid before the HSG procedure. 2 weeks after the HSG, my TSH decreased from 1.47 to 0.04. My Ft4 and Ft3 increase from mid range to the upper range. My question is does HSG trigger a new episode of grave disease?
329165 tn?1515471990 Sorry to hear that. Folks' allergies can change every five years, so, this is probably the case with you. Hopefully, one day, this will pass and you will be able to eat these foods again. I had a suspicion as I was reading your post that you had shellfish allergies due to your intolerance of the iodine bath they gave you before your surgery, this is a dead give-away normally.
Avatar m tn Recently my Angiogram test was postponed because of memory loss before test.Suspected allergy -Pednisolene or Phenegen taken before test. The memory loss lasted for about 5 hrs.I have heard of a similar reaction of another patient to Pednisolene .Pl advise as I am scared to face this again.
Avatar n tn My husband is extremely allergic to iodine (So was his mother) and also allergy to shellfish. 03-12-2015 he had an Adrenal venous sampling with contrast dye done. We told them that he could not have the dye. They advised it would be a tiny bit of dye and the Benadryl Prep (3 50mg doses of Prednisone and 50 mg of Benadryl) would stop the reaction. Well this is the 3rd time he does the prep and the 3rd time this happened. This is the worst.
Avatar n tn It was VERY scary! Feeling my face go hot, seeing a rash on my legs! The nurse was the one who noticed I wasn't look too good. Then my chest felt like an elephant sitting on me, and I could feel my throat closing up, and had difficulty breathing. Luckily they knew what to do! I drank a gallon or two of water (which is the emergency way of getting it out of your system quick smart!) Luckily I was caught in time and they didn't need to put a needle in my heart with adrenaline!
Avatar n tn I would just ask your DR about it. Thats your best bet because they might be able to do a quick test of some sort. I would call and talk to the DR before THurs. just in case. My mother is allergic to Iodine and my 2 brothers and I are not. I guess it may be the luck of the draw in your case and mine.
Avatar f tn Also make sure that either you or your mother contact the place she will be having the CT scan a few days beforehand to make sure they are aware that she has to have the non-ionic dye due to an iodine allergy. Some places to not keep this on hand all the time, so they may have to order it in, so don't wait until the day of the scheduled scan or it may have to be rescheduled.
Avatar m tn It may be due to exercise, but after the prickly feelings wore off a day after the scan, I got these unusual breast pains that I have never experienced before. Very scary. I had a scan with radioactive iodine 3 months before. ( And the annual breast x-rays earlier in the year.) Maybe I have been getting to much exposure?
174468 tn?1300059528 Thank you for your reply. I am sorry that has happened to you. I am ????. You were originally dxd with Graves? You had surgery, then RAI and found to be Hashimoto's? Did your doctor put you on the iodine or did YOU have to insist? (Do the "specialists" really know what they are doing? Are any of them listening?) Did you find the information about the iodine? Did you have to insist your dr give you T3?
678571 tn?1228012270 I usually go to a cardiologist in another city. But my cardiologist could not perform my scheduled angiogram. My symptoms before this angiogram were chest pain with exertion of any kind. After this angiogram, I have had blood pressure problems, breathing problems, dry cough, shortness of breath and all the other symptoms that my cardiologist wanted me to do an angiogram for. He had said that if I needed an other stent put in. I would need a bypass even though I have small vessels.
Avatar f tn As long as you let the surgeon know about your allergy to the iodine, he or she can plan any further treatment around that. There is something , I think it is called External Beam Radiation, which is sometimes used for thyroid cancer. It is something you can investigate. Good luck to you and your sister.
Avatar m tn I have never reacted to jewelry or shrimp, but am going to have a bloodtest for shellfish allergy. I'm down to 7.5 mg prednisone and mostly just having a fairly constant rash and itching now. I'm really hoping that the other symptoms don't come back. Betbri, what problems are you having? Were you given contrast IV for a CT? I wasn't aware of metallic content in contrast.
Avatar f tn Confused about soybean oil on a low iodine diet. The thyca.org website has a low iodine diet cookbook and lists what you can and cannot have. One the can't have- all soy products. On the can have side all oils including soy oil? What does this mean. I found an unsalted margarine and all ingredients look good except it has soybean oil. Is is ok? Any info is appreciated.
Avatar f tn ve had EKG which was normal, blood work normal, abnormal heart monitor which led to a stress test, stress test was abnormal which led to angiogram, and the angiogram came back good showing no blockage. So with all that said, I'm not sure why now I'm struggling with skipped heart beats, which I've had in the past.. Actually I had the same thing happen when I got home from hospital after angiogram.. And the hospital gave me metoprolol there as well..
Avatar f tn I am 37 yr old female. I do have anxiety and am on medicine for that, but my cardiologist put me on metoprolol, a very low dose, trying to help with my heart rate palpitations. I took my 1/2 pill of metoprolol 2 days ago and felt weird, which could have been just nervous bc I was scared of what it would do to my heart rate. My heart rate really hasn't been too high here lately so that's why I was concerned.
Avatar f tn If that nodule is the benign colloid nodule or toxic nodule (that may flare up after iodine ingestion and confused with the allergy reaction) the PEI procedure may be attempted to relieve compression symptoms prior to going for surgical removal. Finally the allergy can be caused by certain ionic iodine compounds, therefore Iodated salt (containing potassium iodate, not iodide can be used).
Avatar m tn Finally, any experiences you have had? To my knowledge, I do not have an iodine allergy or renal issues. But I have read where iodine is contradicted with Hashimoto. Thank you!
