Common Questions and Answers about Ammonia meat

ammonia

Avatar m tn Cut out eating all red meat, red meat helps to create ammonia in people with advanced cirrhosis.
Avatar m tn On your end, eat red meat sparingly, if at all; the ammonia is a byproduct of poor protein metabolism, I believe. Try to get plenty of protein through white meat chicken, legumes, bean curd (tofu), etc. I imagine the doctor will also limit sodium intake as well, although for other reasons.
Avatar f tn A problem my friend with Hep C and i have encountered is that consumption of animal protein caused an ammonia buildup. I would wake up to the constant smell of ammonia everywhere i went. Since i am mostly vegetarian, and only break this rule with fish a few times a month, i was careful to note that the ammonia smell only occurred after eating fish. My physician tested me and found that i definitely had an ammonia buildup and i should stop eating animal protein.
Avatar f tn Lunch meat I do but the cat box is a big no no. Its for a different reason than the lunch meat so I've never heard of the coralation between the cats eating raw meat and the litter box. I thought it was due to the ammonia but I'm not 100% sure. Either way I'd avoid it as much as possible.
Avatar m tn Do you eat a lot of meat and very little carbohydrates? If this ratio becomes unbalanced it can cause the ammonia smell in your sweat and bowel movements.
Avatar m tn Aim playing racket ball three times a week for well 2-3 hours. I notice this ammonia smell with my sweat. Now I always sweat heavy when I work out. But this ammonia smell new. Other than this smell aim fine losing some weight.
Avatar f tn That, and a good diet with no red meat and lots of leafy greens will bring the ammonia down. Always keep salt intake as close to 1000 mg as possible. No processed or fast foods. Use salt only at the end, when cooking. Try new foods. All the very Best to you both.
Avatar f tn Hello: Occassionally when having a bowel movement, I notice a very strong odor of ammonia. It reminds me of the odor at the camp outhouses. I haven't been able to figure any similarities between instances (recent eating habits, activities, etc.). We eat a round diet of meat, veggies and fruits. My bowel movements for the most part are good in regularity and consistency. The only medical condition I've had lately was with high blood pressure.
Avatar n tn My ammonia levels have increased to 159. I am not at the present experiencing confusion but I feel as if I a in a fog and have muscle soreness all over. Can this be from the elevated levels. I do have stag 4 cirrohis and hep C but HCV load is not detectable at this time.
Avatar n tn Didn't your Doctor give him Lactulose? This is a syrup like substance that you swallow and it clears the ammonia out. There are certain foods which cause more ammonia problems than others. Eating lots of meat isn't a good idea. Surely the Doctor gave you some of this information. If he didn't, you need a different Doctor quick. I'm sorry you are going through this.
Avatar m tn Do you think the meat is why? How long has it been like this? Thanks for commenting and sharing- it helps others to know they are not alone!
Avatar f tn When I do gentle exercise or its a hot day, the perspiration from my arms, neck and other body parts smells very strongly of cat wee or ammonia. So much so that people around me constantly comment 'can you smell wee?' etc. Its really getting me down. I am a 23 year old woman, vegetarian, currently taking Levothyroxine (just as background info) Please help.
Avatar f tn how do you get the ammonia count down in liver disease? This discussion is related to Re: Ammonia level.
Avatar f tn red meat, when digested, puts off a lot of ammonia. With a compromised liver, the ammonia can go right to the brain and cause a brain fog. Eventually, if you eat enough red meat with a damaged liver, and the next stage would be a hepatic coma. So which is better? A steak, or possibly dying? Your choice. Healthy diet, or horrific side effects that can compromise every aspect of your life? I'm Italian and had to give up red sauce, pizza, meat, and pram cheese. Now my skin looks lovely.
Avatar f tn Why certain types of protein are better than other for cirrhotics - When choosing animal protein, it is important to choose lean (low-fat) cuts of meat- such as fish, white meat chicken and white meat turkey. Keep in mind that even the leanest cuts of red meat are high in fat content. In fact, approximately 50 to 75 percent of calories from most red meats actually come from fat! Even a carefully trimmed cut of fine lean red meat probably derives about 50 percent of its calories from fat.
Avatar m tn HE can be precipitated when the liver can no longer manage ammonia produced by the colon as a byproduct of protein metabolism. Animal proteins can cause ‘meat drunks’ in cirrhotics. Apparently, years ago meat consumption was discouraged in decompensated cirrhotics, but there are meds to manage this now. This is purely speculation on my part, of course, and this could be due to something else entirely. Have him contact his GI or hepatologist, but he could mention this as a possibility.
Avatar n tn Protein, and particularly meat protein produces ammonia in the colon; and while a healthy liver can manage this, a cirrhotic liver is often incapable of removing it. This results in ‘brain fog’, or hepatic encephalopathy. It can often be effectively managed with the drug ‘Lactulose’; a laxative that encourages frequent bowel movements.
Avatar n tn I've noticed that from time to time, but becoming more frequent, my urine has a strong ammonia smell. The color is fairly normal - clear to golden - but the smell is there! I don't have pain or burning while urinating nor do I go to the toilet more often than usual. So what can be the cause? Thanks for any ideas.
Avatar n tn Lately when I urinate, it smells very strongly, but not of ammonia or of any of the other common complaints; more like animal urine (a very strong urine smell). I drink a lot of water, urinate regularly, and have no other symptoms. What could this be, should I be worried?
Avatar m tn She has some sleep apnea but primary physician doubts it is of issue here. Serum ammonia was high but we think it is better now as confusion she was experiencing has improved. Any thoughts as to what this might be?
4862546 tn?1360241703 In patients with decompensated cirrhosis and hepatic encephalopathy (HE) Lactulose/Kristalose is the first line of treatment after the elimination of red meat protein from the diet, which during digestion produces high levels of ammonia and other toxins. Kristalose can be mixed in plain water and has almost no flavor. Mix it in juices and you will never taste it. Kristalose is manufactured by Cumberland Pharmaceuticals Inc., Nashville, TN.
Avatar m tn Below is a link that explains hepatic encephalopathy http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.
Avatar n tn My urine has a very very strong ammonia smell and my vaginally gets a dead animal smell i don't have std never have I'm not on birth control i did suffer from chronic urinary.
Avatar f tn Hi I also have hepatic encephalopathy, not due to same reasons as you, my liver is working ok, I have portal vein blockage and the blood bypasses my liver and does not get rid of toxins, especially ammonia, although they've never got a high ammonia blood test level from me. I have never drunk alcohol, mine is a random thing.
