Avatar n tn Loratadine is considered a placebo by many doctors (and many patients that I have talked to). Zyrtec and Allegra are good choices. Since Allegra just came OTC, it will be much more expensive the Zyrtec generic. I take Zyrtec. Take care and feel better. God bless.
Avatar n tn The treatment of urticaria firmly rest on antihistamine which unfortunately cause sedation. Not many lab tests help.May be you can try some less sedating antihistaminic like allegra.Make sure that you do not take erthromycin or ketoconazoles which are contra indicated with allegra.60 mg twice daily would do.Do consult your doc.
Avatar n tn m just looking for advice and to see if anyone else is going through what i am. I was Diagnosed with chronic Cholinergic Urticaria. I cant exercise, i cant even go outside in the winter, i break out in hives every single day and every time i do, my throat gets real scratchy, and really gets be scared. On top of that i'm also highly allergic to dust, molds, pollen, dander, and almost every other airborne allergens. So when i dont get hives from CU, i get them from the airborne allergens.
Avatar n tn I am suffering with urticaria since 5 months.
Avatar f tn Well in April of this year I started breaking out in hives everywhere..so I saw a Dermatologist who said that the hives are urticaria and to see an Allergist. So I saw an Allergist who has determined that the hives are not caused by an allergy and wants to run blood work to determine if there is an autoimmune problem causing the hives. The Dermatologist says this is a waste of time because of the Hashimotos and to accept the fact that I won't be able find the true reason for the hives.
Avatar n tn When I was younger the docotor said I was allergic to soap but then it was diagnosed as aqugenic urticaria. However, 2 years ago I suffered from a near fatal anaphylactic shock. Is this just a carry forward to my diagnosis? Have many other sufferers had this happen to them?
Avatar n tn I have chronic urticaria and sometimes have angioedema ( lip swelling). I have stopped taking doxepin HCL because of side effects of weight gain. Am taking one Allegra in the AM and one Zrytec at night for about 3 days. The itchy rashes are a big annoyance. I have been allergy tested for food and have no food allegies. Any suggestions?
1451936 tn?1294898715 allergic reaction as well as viral exanthema would improve by use of topical corticosteroids and oral antihistamines; pressure urticaria, as well as urticaria caused by cold or by water would also improve by use of oral corticosteroids and antihistamines. Anxiety might be your main issue now. Anxiety is one of triggers for pruritus (itchiness) on otherwise unchanged skin.
Avatar f tn I'm 43 years old. Heathy and fit. I've had an allergic reaction to the cold since I was a child. It varies all the time some years worse than others. I break out in hive or develop a rash up my arms or my eyes or lips swell up. It is winter time now and I've noticed I am having a very hard time taking a deep breath. Not all the time, it seems to get really bad when I'm cold. Could this now be a new reaction I'm getting.
Avatar f tn There is uncertainty in the disappearance of the urticaria. Some studies stated that if urticaria stays for more than 6 months there are 40% chances that it may persist for period of 10 years. In some cases it can disappear in a short period. I suggest you to consult a allergy specialist. Take care and regards.
Avatar n tn I HAVE TO TAKE ALLEGRA IN AM ZYRTREC IN AFTERNOON AND AN ITCHING RX ALONG WITH STEROIDS, IF I MISS A DOSE ALL OF A SUDDEN THEY APPEAR, CHECK WITH AN ALLERGY SPECIALIST
Avatar f tn Hello, What you are describing may be hives. Hives (medically known as urticaria) are red, itchy, raised areas of skin that appear in varying shapes and sizes. They have a tendency to change size rapidly and to move around, disappearing in one place and reappearing in other places, often in a matter of hours. Many cases of hives are "idiopathic," meaning no cause is known. Others may be triggered by viral infections or medications.
Avatar n tn acute and chronic(when hives persist for more than 6 weeks). The most likely triggers for acute urticaria are allergies to pets, horses, latex and foods, such as shellfish and nuts, bee or wasp stings, allergies to medicines, Viral infections, such as glandular fever and herpes, dental and sinus infections, fungal infections, blood transfusions and vaccines. The cause of chronic urticaria is often more difficult to identify.
Avatar n tn The cause of the Urticaria could also be related to the cause of your cough and, treatment for the Urticaria might even provide cough relief. Another simple method to determine if a med is causing your problems is to withhold that drug or use an unrelated substitute. Don’t do this on your own but only after consultation with your doctor.

Avatar f tn Finally, my doctor recommended me to an allergist. The allergist had me taper off the prednisone and put me on 100mg Allegra in the morning and 10mg Zyrtec at night. She tested me for every allergy. I came back to being allergic to nothing. We also did a blood tests for my thyroid, cancer, graves disease, and various other diseases. My thyroid levels came back normal but my auto antibodies came back high, over 400.
Avatar f tn The ones on the backs of my knees itch/burn so bad and they make the back of the knee swell like there are grape clusters there for about a half hour then go down. Anyhow, doc put me on prednisone + Allegra and said to call if they come back as they probably wouldn't..well here I am 3 days after the prednisone and starting to icth like heck again! Also, I am VERY tired all the time. UGH I am so tired of all this tiredness and itching!
Avatar n tn It is defined as urticaria that persists for longer than 6 weeks. The cause of chronic urticaria is often more difficult to identify. Most cases are called chronic idiopathic urticaria, which means they're caused by the body's unexplainable development of antibodies to itself (auto-antibodies). Chronic urticaria is often accompanied by coexistent physical urticaria, triggered by environmental exposure to heat, cold, sunlight, vibration, pressure on the skin or even exercise.
1653132 tn?1301852306 Hello, Chronic urticaria is defined as urticaria that persists for longer than 6 weeks. In most of the cases of chronic urticaria, the underlying pathology is idiopathic i.e. it is not linked to any cause. It is essential to rule out the presence of serious illnesses of which recurring hives can be a symptom. Examples are hepatitis, hyperthyroidism, lymphomas, collagen vascular diseases etc. The most potent antihistamine for urticaria is probably the anti-depressant doxepin.
Avatar n tn Followed up with Pediatrician, referred to dermatologist who thought it was serum sickness (rash he thought was urticaria). Turns out my son took Keflex starting 7/15 and ending 8/1, also had a tetanus shot 7/15 and sometime this year had a pneumonia vaccine..He referred to allergist. Only symptom present when seen by allergist was rash which continued to come and go.
Avatar n tn She diagnosed me with Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria. I was in and out of the hospital for months. Each time the hives would continue to get worse. My throat would swell. I've had to inject myself with the epipen because of it. Was on steroids on and off. My daily medications were Allegra, Zantac twice a day, Claritin, Singulair, and four doxepins at night which just managed the itching but didn't stop the hives. I got pregnant again and the hives stopped.
Avatar n tn I'm look for advice. I am a 24 yr old female with a history of Atypical migraines that started off with aura and classic symptoms of light and sound sensitivity, nausea, irritability and has progressed over the last 3 years to mood changes - euphoria, depression and about 6 episodes of seizures. Excerpt from "Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies - TPO Autoantibodies and Their Significance" by Elaine Moore.... "In conditions of chronic urticaria, thyroid antibodies are not only indicators of chronic inflammation, but they appear to play a role in the disease process.
Avatar n tn Hives (medically known as urticaria) are red, itchy, raised areas of skin that appear in varying shapes and sizes. They have a tendency to change size rapidly and to move around, disappearing in one place and reappearing in other places, often in a matter of hours. You can apply some calamine lotion at the rash as it will help in soothing the skin. You can take some OTC oral antihistamine medications like Benadryl or Claritin and see if it helps.
