Common Questions and Answers about Actonel and fractures

actonel

Avatar m tn Food and Drug Administration raised concerns about the potential for some serious side effects in women taking bone-building drugs called bisphosphonates, specifically Fosamax, Actonel and Reclast. The published findings are not new.
Avatar f tn It also affects the absorption of calcium, which in turn can lead to osteoporosis and fractures. Discuss your concerns with your doctor before stopping any medication. I hope it helps. Best luck and regards!

Avatar n tn I take once monthly Actonel. While I was pushing the pill through the foil blister, it broke. I did not take that pill for fear that it could cause stomach problems. My question is would it have been safe to take? Also, if I contact Proctor & Gamble, do you think they might replace the pill. If it was a daily pill, I wouldn't worry about, but I just lost a whole month of medicine due to a faulty package design.
Avatar f tn m wondering what is her out look for recovery and the best home treatment such as the safest exercises and should she use a donut coushion or what not to do .
Avatar n tn I have osteoporosis of the right hip and osteopenia of the left hip. I have peripheral neuropathy (familial), and two bad knees.
Avatar n tn Not long ago a report was released about a possible link between these drugs and esophagal cancer - and also femur fractures because long term use of these drugs can actually cause brittle bones. The new recommendation from doctors (including my new primary care) is to not use them more than 5 years. Sorry to throw some scare out there - but I've spent 5 years reading all I can about osteoporosis, and those drugs would be the very last option for me. I stress, for "me".
Avatar n tn One may develop some kind of intestinal problems with Actonel and the alternative to that is to not to take drug empty stomach, that is to take it after a meal. Please let us know if you may have nay other queries and what your doctor says. Good luck.
Avatar m tn Among them are some 500,000 vertebral or spine fractures, 250,000 hip fractures, and 240,000 wrist fractures. The numbers are different in different countries: reported incidences of hip fractures are highest in the US and Northern Europe; intermediate in Mediterranean and Asian countries, and lowest in South Africa, particularly in the areas where people follow traditional ways of life. There are more fractures among city dwellers than among country folk.
Avatar m tn Non-hormonal biphosphonates (such as Fosamax and Actonel) increase bone strength and are available as once-a-week pills. These can also be taken. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
Avatar f tn I got into a fight 2 days ago i was headbutted on my nose and 2 bottles were whipped and the side and back of my head. Once i got home i took a cold shower and tylenol and went to sleep i woke up and went to the hospitail they did a CT scan on me for my head and nose they said i was fine. I judt wanted to know if a CT Scan is accurate and reliable right after an injury or should i have waited couple of days for the ct scan to be accrutate and reliable? How long will my head hurt for?
Avatar f tn But your question really caught my attention, because I am dealing with the same topic right now, stress fractures, but mine is in the spine. I had a bone density scan done 2 years ago, and it came back with slight osteopenia, not unusual for a woman my age, 2 years post menapausal. After a stress fracture occured 6 weeks ago, another bone density scan was done, and in 2 years it shows just my spine has progressed to osteoporosis.
Avatar f tn It depends. :-) What are your exact injuries and how severe? What did your doctor recommend? If it's restricted to hip fractures, I'd be surprised to see you doing much walking around so soon. Any movement is going to hurt like hades, and it's going to take a lot of time for that to go away. Your bones need to heal before they can completely support your weight without assistance - like crutches or a walker.
614689 tn?1225748884 I have heard that they can fill the fractured vertebrae, but is this treatment also an option for the old fractures? Kyphosis is very apparent in the imaging, and, as you can imagine, I do NOT want to resemble the hunchback of Notre Dame before I am 30! I appreciate any light you can shed on the subject. Thanks!
Avatar f tn Not to sound rude, but you are trying to use "big" words mixed with poor grammar and spelling. I would suggest using regular every day terms, for m any reasons. But, on to your actual question. Enjoy your therapy and get serious with it, that's what your hand and fingers need. Yes, they are right, this is all muscle and soft tissue you are feeling. They need to be stretched and strengthened.
1200310 tn?1265322110 TracyCee and Blujax are correct. The only way to confirm a hairline fracture is through an x-ray. Some times a fracture, hairline or not will not be apparent on an x-ray. However as the bone begins to heal itself calcium is deposited along the fracture line and they are more easily seen. Hope this has been helpful.
Avatar f tn The doctor said I had metacarpal fractures(boxer fractures) and sent a referral to have casts put on my hands. A few days pasted after the casts were put on I removed both of them because they got soaking wet. Now I have been experiencing numbness and a tingling sensation starting from the middle of my forearm to my figures. What could be this mean and is it serious?
Avatar f tn i am a student at the university of leeds. I study product design and for my final project i am designing a pill dispenser. would anyone feel comfortable answering a questionnaire i have designed towards people who take regular medication?
Avatar m tn inflammations, fractures/ dislocations, bone bruise, referred pain from other regions, micronutrient deficiencies etc. While fractures and dislocations would be ruled out with x-rays other possibilities may need to be evaluated for. I would recommend acquiring a straight back posture while sitting. Back and postural supports may be useful for the purpose. Physiotherapy may help improve the strength in the back muscles and may be helpful in symptomatic relief.
Avatar f tn She is a softball player and runs track. We had both areas x-rayed and the x-rays did not show a fracture in either area. We have applied ice and heat and also given her anti-inflamatory medicine for 8 weeks. She tried jogging again and it is hurting again and seems to be worse. I have made an appointment with a podiatrist. Do these area take a long time to heal or do you think there might be stress fractures that are not showing up on the x-rays?
720656 tn?1311040235 You might want to ask your pharmacist for more specific directions as far as the timing of your meds. I take Actonel once a month and my pharmacist said it was fine to take it at the same time as my levothyroxine since Actonel is also supposed to be taking first thing in the morning. Don't mix meds unless you get an all clear from a pharmacist.
Avatar f tn Fractures are not a common thing to happen with vaginal births. If a women fractures her ribs it would more likely be caused a big increase in pressure or maybe she has some kind of bone problem. The only other kind of fractures that occur are pelvic or tailbone fractures & that is from the baby being large in size or the women is of small stature.
Avatar m tn I have had 3 compression fractures in my thoraxic spine (T10. 11, and 12) and were fixed with Kyphoplasty. In my Lumbar spine, i have had 4 compression fractures that were old and never fixed. I guess I didn't realize they were broken. Now I also have 3 ruptured discs in the Lumbar area, and 2 more in my Cervical spine. Is there anything that they can do other than fuse them all? I do not want to be stiff, but now with a spinal stenosis tag on me, I am having a lot of pain.
Avatar f tn I'll try and condense this as much as possible. Had tib/fib fractures- including malleolar fractures-16 months ago.I had ORIF w/insertion of tibial nail within 48hours. 5months later had bone graft done on my fibula. I have always had pain in my ankle and have some numbness on the dorsom of my foot. Through routine xrays it was noted by a radiologist that I may have signs of AVN of the talus.-CT scan was ordered Talar AVN confirmed.
Avatar f tn I have personally evaluated patients for osteoporosis with prior overuse pelvic fractures who ultimately had normal bone density on their DXA scan. Stress fractures themselves are not indicative of osteoporosis. Fragility fractures-- which include a fracture of the hip, pelvis, wrist, spine, or shoulder sustained during a fall from standing height-- are concerning for osteoporosis.
