Common Questions and Answers about Accutane side effects years later

Avatar n tn Hi, Ive been on Accutane several times during the years. It has worked just fine for me. Im now wondering after reading about it on the internet, it says on many places that it takes 2-3 months for it to have effect. I don´t understand this. It has started to have effect on me after just a few days. The skin gets dry almost immediately.
Avatar n tn Elena: Like most dermatologists, I prescribe Accutane practically every day. Patients get dry lips, some get dry skin and the forearms, and about 1 in 8 get mild aches and pains in the muscles, not enough to come close to slowing them down. These go away after stopping the drug. Night vision problems can happen, but I have seen this once in 18 years. Bone changes are not an issue. I have never seen meaningful or permanent hair loss. Accutane is a marvelous drug.
Avatar n tn I'm 35 yrs old and i'm scared to take accutane because of side effects and i've dealt w/depression but i've tried everything else and i'm more than frustrated i just want the acne gone. has anyone taken it at my age?
Avatar f tn Accutane has a relatively long half life and can stay in your body for up to 5 weeks after discontinuation, during which time side effects may continue. A causal link between Accutane and ongoing side effects has not been proven, although much anecdotal evidence exists. When deciding whether to take Accutane patients and their doctors must weigh up the potential side effects against the expected benefit.
Avatar n tn I finished taking accutane about 7 years ago. Now every pimple or mark i get, i get a scar. Its white and slighly raised. My question is, is it possible that accutane could affect your healing and make you prone to scarring permanently? I've heard durning the treatment and a couple years after your skin is thin and sensitive but not permanently. I would appreciate an answer as I am really depressed over this.
Avatar n tn Four years ago, I developed a terrible, painful case of adult acne. My doctor prescribed acutane right away, and five months later I was cured. I have an occasional pimple, but that is normal. I had almost no side effects, none that I could feel. I went in every month for a blood test to make sure my chemistry was within normal limits. My cholesteral is typically around 110, and during my treatment it increased to 160, which was no problem.
Avatar f tn Anyways, you mentioned that it's better to take accutane in divided doses. Is that to reduce side effects, or to improve absorption? If the absorption is the same, then it's safer for me to take it all at once with a planned healthy meal before I leave for work. Otherwise, I'll try to take a 2nd dose before bed with milk, as you suggested. Do you know how long it takes for the drug to get into the blood stream? I read that the half-life is 21 hours.
Avatar n tn It is reserved for the treatment of severe acne. Accutane side effects range from dry skin to birth defects, Crohn's disease, liver failure, depression and suicide. If may cause depression, psychosis and, rarely, suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, suicide, and aggressive and/or violent behaviors. So, it has to be taken under medical supervision and any untoward effects reported. Regards.
Avatar n tn it's been 8 days know and the only thing that i and every body who sees me hve noticed is that my skin tone has become darker by adout 2 shades, so i read the side effects and it said that the medication can couse hyperpigmentation . so what should i do to reduce this side effect ,should i reduce the dosage or stop taking accutane and will my normal colour come back . note that my real skin tone is olive becouse i'm from the middle east.
Avatar n tn I think this might be attributed to the Accutane because it showed up just as I completed the 8 month course, and I have read other complaints about eye floaters and Accutane. Other than that, the side-effects have been well worth enduring. Why is Roche concerned about bone changes more than the other side-effects after multiple courses? And is it reasonable to attribute the eye floater to the Accutane?
Avatar n tn what is your response to this? you recommend bone age xrays for younger patients on accutane. I have read that years of antibiotic use are not the best option either. My 13 year old has begun 40mg accutane a few days ago and I am assuming the dosage could be increased if all goes well month by month. Please advise...growth arrest would not be worth it.
Avatar n tn I hope you don't become hostile after taking Accutane. Some side effects may occur. It is classified as Controlled Substance Class II in the United State.
Avatar n tn Hello, doctor. In the seventeen years that you have been prescribing Accutane, what significant side effects have you noticed. Thank you very much.
Avatar n tn The makers of accutane recognise that changes to the hair do occur in rare cases and this is listed as one of the potential side effects. Accutane is a powerful drug, chemically related to vitamin A, which can cause severe adverse reactions. For this reason it is reserved for the most severe cases of acne which have not responded to other treatments. Accutane remains the drug which can best lead to a long term remission for acne.
Avatar n tn There are, however, some side effects. Skin dryness being one of them, the skin in the face on arms legs or on tummy. It's pretty irritating, but by applying some cream it's a bit better. The biggest side effect the one that bothers me really is being exhausted. I used to be able to run like hell, but now since I began the treatment I have quite severe exhaustion, I can barely go up the stairs one level without being a bit exhausted which I had no problem before.
Avatar n tn Care must be taken when prescribing to adolescent patients who have not finished growing. Due to the many reported side effects, accutane is reserved for patients with nodular acne or acne conglobata which is at risk of scarring or causing psychological problems. Before considering accutane patients should try oral oxytetracycline which is effective at clearing many types of acne including rosacea and peri-oral dermatitis.

Avatar n tn I really hope my derm lets me cause I understand all the potential side effects and would really like to do it in the safest means possible but if he doesn't and I do self medicate I would like to know what extra precautions I should take to stay as safe as possible. Please don't try and dissuade me and just help me to know the safest way I could go about this treatment.
Avatar n tn I assumed it was part of the side-effects of Accutane as even my eyelids feel sticky at times. Therefore, I massaged some Aquaphor onto the head of my penis getting the tip of the tube moist. The redness went away by the next morning. Therefore, my daily regiment includes lubricated the tip of my penis, lips, nose and eyelids. This discussion is related to Accutane and broken urethral lining.
Avatar n tn This worked great for me as accutane did help and then came back 3 years later. If you want more info on what I use I'd be glad to help as its has really worked and ive seen it with others too Its also improved my well being.
Avatar f tn No, I had not seen this, but I read on it earlier today it and OMG.! What a nasty drug!!! Roche has removed this from the US market, after 1000s of lawsuits in 2009 and has been banned in a number of countries currently.
Avatar m tn For back pain and other side effects of Accutane, people have found the supplements to take to counteract these side effects: Here are some posts from the internet: "Anyway, the maintenance dose works, but after a year and a half of taking Accutane I was becoming less tolerant of the side effects of even a maintenance dose (headaches, excessive dryness, etc.). Well, I have managed to combat the headaches and excessive dryness by increasing my Vitamin E intake from 400-800 I.U.
Avatar f tn Accutane was pulled off the market in 2009. I find it alarming that this drug is back on the market again. Accutane side effects include Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) which include Accutane induced Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis; Having your colon removed; Severe depression or suicidal tendencies; Heart attack, stroke, seizure or lowered blood cell count. And there are many other side effects of Accutane mentioned in many comments online and includes joint pain.
Avatar m tn I have given up so much and I continue to be plagued with this. Its close to a $1000 for fillers and they have side effects or risk more scars.
Avatar n tn I just take regular mini pill Microgestin Fe 1/20 back to back. I have done that for years. No side effects, no nothing (and I have severe endometriosis if I don't do this). PLEASE don't let anyone talk you into Depo Provera shots. That stuff is evil incarnate. It will stop your sex drive, just make you feel like a sexless piece of nothing. Hey, they give it to men to stop their sex drive, so what is up with that?
Avatar n tn Then 3 years later my acne came back with a vengeance. Now I have all the side effects in the world. I feel like I have an ulcer or something. WTF???
Avatar m tn There are lots of people that say it was the best thing ever, and some say it did horrible things to them. Since over 2,000,000 people have taken Accutane, isn't it probable that averse side effects would happen sooner or later? But don't you think it is over dramatized? Two separate studies done by Britain and Israel show the safety of Accutane. Here is a link to the site that I found the studies:
Avatar n tn A doctor visit is confidential if your the legal age, so I would talk with him/her regarding your concerns regarding birth control and accutane. There are side effects that may occur. I remember any tiny cuts I had (like paper cuts) would get infected, so I needed to clean any cut or scrape with peroxide and I was fine. I think I did get a rash once, but I used a rash cream and it went away and didn't come back. As mentioned, talk to a derm and look online for info.
Avatar f tn I took Accutane when I was 15 and I'm currently 17. The first few months I was on it I had none of the side effects. It was perfect. Then the last month and a half my skin got really dry, and I was constantly applying moisturizer to try to keep my skin from peeling. My lips were so dry they bled. Now, two years later it was probably the best thing I could have done. I do some modeling, which had always been a goal but never seemed possible.
Avatar n tn I stopped a six month accutane therapy 2 years ago and side effects are still very bad, even worse. Every morning, when I wake up my skin is peeling. It is so fragile it is constantly breaking up (even if I use a gentle face wash) I have tried all sorts of moisturizers and there is no improvement. My dermatologist told me there is nothing I can do but I can't believe it. It is not a regular dry skin, it is sick in a kind of way. What can I do ?
