Common Questions and Answers about Abilify for treatment resistant depression

abilify

407790 tn?1397761026 My doctor just put me on Abilify, which I'm not very happy about considering the side effects. However, I have treatment-resistant depression so I'm running out of options. I will be taking a very low dose, though: 2.5 mg. Does anyone know if you're less likely to get side effects if you're on a low dose? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
Avatar n tn There is OUTSTANDING research showing that, in conjunction with a standard anti-depressant, it is extremely good at treating depression (especially treatment resistant depression).
901137 tn?1267626189 hey Mike, Your stats sound much like mine. Very similar, age, family, depression, the lot. And Effexor 300 mgs too. Are you me? Joking but it's a touch eerie. I'm glad you clarified the diagnosis as I strongly believe your doc is wrong. The test is accurate and gives a better picture. Often if we've seen a doc for some years, like I have too, we become friendly and tend to be very relaxed and even joking with them.
Avatar n tn I have been several antidepressants for anxiety/depression/ocd. I feel good for a few weeks and then they seem to poop out until the next increase. I am currently on Prozac/Abilify. I am on 80mg of Prozac and was on 2 mg of the Abilify. I was doing well for a few week and then it seemed to poop out on me again. So the Dr. upped my Abilify to 5 mg. I have been at that dose for week and I am feeling ton of anxiety, worse than before.
Avatar m tn Usually Abilify is used for schizophrenia, bipolar disorders and as an adjunct therapy (add on therapy) for major depression. The treatment prescribed depends on your psychiatrist’s assessment of your case. However, the dose prescribed is the lowest for the drug. Treatment for depression usually begins with a low dose of SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). Some doctors prescribe benzodiazepines too.
Avatar n tn I am in a a total fog all the time. I have been diagnosed with treatment resistant depression for years and years. I have bee diagnosed with inatatentive add also. When I first started stimulants they helped for abouit a month then stopped. I have been in a fox 9 out of every10 days about all of my lfe. I have tried ever stimulant and every antideppressant out there. My house is a mess cause I can't even think of where to put things or where they belong.
Avatar f tn Only bummer about Abilify is the cost. it can be very expensive. It works for a lot of people and may work for you also. Give the Abilify a good 6 weeks to work at full effect. Keep in touch and if you need me you can always PM me.
Avatar m tn Abilify is an anti-psychotic med commonly used to treat psychotic illnesses such as bipolar disorder, schitzophrenia, etc. It is sometimes used as an adjunct treatment (in addition to another antidepressant) to treat clinical depression, alrthough I've honestly never heard of it being Rx'ed alone for depression. That doesn't mean it isn't done or that it won't help, I'm just telling you the common uses.
644988 tn?1236364548 I have had chronic depression for all my life. About 25 years ago a doctor I saw then tried me on lithium. I took it for over 6 months. It didn't help at all. It had no side effects and was no bother trying and stopping. I did have to get regular blood tests to check levels, etc.. I have never met anyone who had just depression that it ever helped, but it's great for manic depressives. I haven't heard it being mentioned for this in decades.
Avatar n tn Actually Ativan is more for anxiety and Abilify is more for depression but it can also help with anxiety. This is common practice, trust in your doctor. Best wishes.
Avatar f tn After years of continued difficulty with bouts of depression, anger/irritability, sleep, I saw a new doctor in 2015 who prescribed Abilify 5mg along with Adderall. He mentioned that he thought I continued to have issues because of the Prozac but did not officially give me a diagnosis. I immediately saw the benefits. However, at the end of 2016 I went through a severe bout of depression and discontinued the Abilify.
1280947 tn?1278376332 Medicine + talk therapy has been suggested as the best treatment of depression. You can get to a place where you can and want to allow happiness to be part of your life. You deserve that. As for the insomnia, that could likely be a side effect of the depression, but if it isn't then a doctor might be able to help you sort it out.
Avatar f tn Some say it does.

1806584 tn?1316208037 I am on Lamotragine (Limictal) now for my depression and I think it works well. I am on Risperdal for my mania, and I think it works great for that. Yes though taper down! I am sure you can find some other med that works for you to replace the abilify also??? Be careful with yourself...please.
794366 tn?1418009395 Abstract Sixty percent of cases of clinical depression are considered to be treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Magnesium-deficiency causes N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) coupled calcium channels to be biased towards opening, causing neuronal injury and neurological dysfunction, which may appear to humans as major depression. Oral administration of magnesium to animals led to anti-depressant-like effects that were comparable to those of strong anti-depressant drugs.
