Common Questions and Answers about What is risperdal used to treat

risperdal

Avatar f tn Risperdal is sometimes used to treat anxiety and depression (amongst other things). Did you mean that your anxiety got worse after stopping opiates? I think that that is to be expected. I expect risperdal would help with the anxiety plus be non-addictive. If you continue to have concerns you should take them to your doctor.
Avatar n tn And yes, abilify, risperdal and intuniv probably are all used to treat the same thing. Although intuniv is also listed for hyperactivity as well as tics. Hopefully, his school is well aware of his situation (he has a 504 or an IEP?) and are working to allow his handicaps. He is at an age where the school work is getting much harder and that certainly adds to the stress levels.
Avatar n tn Medication is often just one component to overcoming something. Knowing what the diagnosis is is essential to knowing what else to do! My search comes up with this. Proate 500 ---- Proate is used as an anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing drug, primarily in the treatment of epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and, less commonly, major depression. It is also used to treat migraine headaches and schizophrenia. Zosert 50------ Zosert is a selective serotonin reputate inhibitor.
Avatar n tn Well it depends. Risperdal is an antipsychotic and it is effective in treating psychosis. Asperger's is a developmental disability and thus doesn't specifically respond to antipsychotics. What is the Risperdal specifically being used for? Also there is a community specifically for Asperger's.
Avatar f tn I was under the impression that Risperidonel was not be used for children under the age of 11 (although I have heard of it being used to treat severely autistic children and also schizophrenia, bi-polar and other related psychotic disorders). I suppose whether your child will be on this medication for the rest of her life will depend upon her diagnosis - whether the mental health issue is a life-long problem or just a short-term one.
Avatar n tn The symptoms that the drug is supposed to treat come on stronger when the drug is stopped?

1516809 tn?1345082764 The reality of the situation that I am finding in my particular instance, or that of my mother is that any of the anti-psychotic medications used to treat the behavioral issues of an Alzheimer's patient carry 'black-box" warnings. The result a Catch-22 of how do you control the behavior, provide a quality of life, and minimize the risk.
Avatar n tn If you can find an alternative school system for him (some days homeschool, others at school), then it may may help him be able to have less tics. This is what worked for my daughter! Best of luck to you!
Avatar n tn I don't think risperdal is an addictive drug. You're thinking of the withdrawal symptoms people can suffer when stopping some of these meds, but I have no personal experience with that drug. I do know it can cause some unwanted side effects, so if you don't think these drugs are right for what's ailing you the sooner you stop the better, but don't stop them abruptly -- taper off.
Avatar m tn s only researched purpose is to treat psychoses, and does not target what drugs for ADHD would generally target. It is also not possible for most primary care physicians to diagnose ADHA or any other mental illness. The problem with diagnosing mental illness generally is that people are really complicated and a general doc doesn't have time to spend talking to a patient for enough time to figure out what's really going on.
Avatar f tn Risperidone is an antipsychotic drug. It is normally used to treat people with serious mental health problems like schizophrenia. It is a newer type of antipsychotic drug and may have fewer side effects than older antipsychotic drugs. Risperidone has sometimes been given to people in the later stages of dementia.
1142551 tn?1264736930 My son was prescribed risperdal a few months ago, but just in this past week after his psych eval. and really hurting his younger brother I have decided to go with it. I wanted it to be a last resort. I have tried dieting, prescribed sleep aids because I thought he was tired (he hardly slept), schedules, pictures, everything. And the aggression just got worse. Like I said the risperdal was a lqst resort. He will be 4 in Sept. and his dose is .
309783 tn?1271958229 She returned from the doctors today with a prescription for concurrent risperdal for OCD. I know her very well. We used to work together and now that we've left work we spend all day together. In the evenings we go to each others houses for supper, our kids all play together and we frequently spend the night at each other's house. We are in constant text contact. My worry is that she does not show any symptoms of what i understand to be OCD.
559509 tn?1216180446 I show mixed tendencies ( is that type 1 ),and my Dr gave me Risperdal for what appeard to be a manic state( I was off all meds at the time except Welbutrin which may have excaserbated my mania). My manic states don't last that long and it confuses me cause I am in somewhat of denial about my diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder which i've had for three years now. I get intense anger and irratability for no reason other than I get pissed off eaily.
2010625 tn?1329372056 Sorry to hear that it is working but the side effects mean you have to change it. That is harsh. Ziprexa was like that with me. Loved what it did to my brain - but it spiked my triglicerides to dangerous levels.
Avatar f tn Oh, you know, I had the same problem starting at 16. It was because my prolactin levels were too high ... caused by a medication (Risperdal) I was taking. The doctors had me have an MRI in case there was a tumor on my pituitary gland, but no it was just the medication. So ... go to the doctor, tell him/her the issue s/he'll draw some blood I assume and see where it goes from there.
1515545 tn?1291395764 Lithium is commonly used to treat Bipolar disorder, and Risperidal for general mood or personality disorders. Feel free to ask your psychiatrist more about the medications you are taking, you're entitled to know.
Avatar f tn Although you are only on a very small dose your body has got used to having that for the last 3 months. Its not going to take long to taper off and surely its better to do that than maybe having some horrid withdrawal effect.
Avatar m tn Okay, let me ask this a different way? I want to get off the saphris because of the side effects but am afraid of being suicidal again. I'd heard Risperdal is used as a "booster" med for people being on anti-depressants. I take 40mg citalopram (generic version of celexa) and 225 mg Venlafaxine (for effexor) each day, then went to 5mg saphris in am and bedtime. I wondered about using Risperdal hoping not to have the same side effects.
