Topamax kidney pain

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax kidney pain

topamax

Avatar f tn I used to take Topamax for nerver pain, it was the only anti-seizure med that really worked well for the pain, and I had three attacks of kidney stones before I found out it was the Topamax causing them. I had to stop taking it, but was wondering if anyone else ever had this problem. I did a little research on it and in a small percentage of people it actually does do this, but my urologist only knew of one other person who took Topamax and had kidney stones.
681148 tn?1437661591 She still has pain and still needs to use strong pain medications for break-through pain but... without the topamax she would be completely disabled and would not be able to walk or use her hands at all. On the topamax she lives a very normal life! So, I think it is a very useful medication for chronic pain. For my chronic migraines, though, it did not bring them down to under 15+ migraines a month. So, my neurologist has also put me on a Beta Blocker and did Botox shots for me as well.
324184 tn?1308076203 If your daughter starts topamax, be sure to find a urologist. One of the major side effects of topamax is kidney stones. After taking it for my migraines for two years, I had kidney's full of stones. I have had three operations to rid myself of them and the surgery/recovery is very painful. The neurologist found out that I was in the hospital for a week ( the first time) and no kidding..yelled into the phone.. OH MY GOSH...ITS THE TOPAMAX!
Avatar f tn Might want to consider checking into kidney stones...Topamax is known to cause a person to form them. I take Topamax for seizures and monitor possible side effects. Hope you get relief and find out soon. Please let us know what you are diagnosed.
Avatar f tn One of my daughters has headaches and we have tried topamax and propranol and she has to many side effects fromthem. Has anyone else had this problem.
Avatar f tn I wish I could take Topamax but apparently if you have a history of kidney stones is a no go! I picked up a stomach virus this week and had a few days of vomiting and all the other stuff that goes with it. OMG! my head hurt so so bad for 3 days. I wasnt able to move. It finally broke yesterday I was so so thankful. I think I would almost trade another kidney stone to never have that pain again!
635356 tn?1259351051 It is important to remember however that while taking topamax the tendency of kidney stone formation increases so take plenty of fluids with this medication. Also if you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember it but do not under any condition take two doses together. Topamax depresses the central nervous system so alcohol and sedatives should be taken with caution. Good luck and keep us posted.
Avatar n tn Important information about Topamax Seek emergency medical attention if you have a sudden change in vision and pain around or behind the eyes. These may be early signs of a serious side effect of Topamax. Do not stop taking Topamax without first talking to your doctor, even if you feel better. You may have increased seizures if you stop taking Topamax suddenly. You will need to use less and less before you stop the medication completely.
214901 tn?1227567555 My doctor recently told me to stop taking it. I developed five kidney stones(3 in one, 2 in the other). Apparently Topamax can cause kidney stones! I wish my doctors had told me this a few years back! I would ask your doctor what side effects are normal, and what side effects might occur with this medication. Also ask about Metoporol for migranes. It worked for me. I hope you feel better. Good luck!
1781720 tn?1314842836 I'm on 100mg of Topamax twice a day. And I am wondering what kind of long term effects this medications can have on someone? I'm only 19, and I take it for daily migraines. I know Benzodiazepine has a bad stomach side effect, and with Topamax, I was wondering if that would happen with taking this high of a dose.
Avatar m tn So i posted this comment to try and get some answers from members who may have not experienced hair loss so it will encourage her to go back on Topamax as the pain has become worse also her Fatigue. I recommend you find a post on this site or the internet related to Topamax and Fibromyalgia and print it off and take to your Rheumatologist as there are 1000's of patient prescribed with Topamax in which to treat Fibromyalgia.
587778 tn?1261397118 I can feel your pain having taken Topamax myself. However, my neurologist started me at 25mg and had me titrate the dosage by 25mg a week at a time until i reached 100mg. i never made it to that dosage. By the time i reached 75mg, i honestly thought i was going to lose my mind. I will be honest and say that this drug "did" reduce the daily headaches to almost none, with migraines diminishing to some degree as well. However, the side effects of this drug is absolutely phenomenal.
1415174 tn?1453243103 Hi, Well I got my migraine variant when I was 23 and it took them 8 years to diagnose me because I would not get a migraine headache or aura but would get throwing up and abdominal pain when I went to bed. I finally found a doctor that said I had a migriane variant and he did an EEG which was abnormal for a migraine/seizure pattern. They can't differentiate it because it was just high signal. I was put on Clonozepam and I am now 50 and haven't had the vomiting /abdominal pain since.
1343409 tn?1296026007 I started taking Topamax my junior year of high school, then I found out I had 4 kidney stones. The doctors think that it might have been because of the topamax, but I wasn't drinking enough water with it, so I think that could have been the problem. I want to try again and make sure I drink plenty of water..trust me, this time I will..lesson learned. First I have to collect my urine for 24 hours and send it away to be tested to see if my kidneys are functioning well.
Avatar f tn Has any of your symtoms started after to Topamax? and if so have the doctors run a Topamax level. Another issue is sometime there are problems with the name brand and the generic. A good place to start is with your pharmacist He can get you a full list of side effects and th other stuff that is in the pill. A good site to use to look up any medicine is Drugs.com or EMC medicine guide. Good luck to you. i will add you to my prayer list.
Avatar f tn I have had a lot of success with Diamox, but am also VERY familiar with pretty much every side effect listed for it...can't win all the time. I noticed a big difference within a few days. I have no idea if that's the norm so you should take it for however long your dr said and see what happens. 250mg worked for me originally, just recently started on 375mg so we'll see. But when I took 500mg, it felt like I wasn't taking anything.
Avatar n tn I've been on Topamax for over a year now and it did that to me at first too, the numbness or tingling, mostly in my toes, I started out at 50mg. and now have been on 75mg, for 6 mos. I will say for me, those side effects have gone away and personally the good out ways the bad, you see, I had a mild stroke from the migraine I had, I have hemiplegic migraines and to me it is worth a little discomfort rather than go through that again!
Avatar n tn Since that time she has been treated for endometriosis, kidney stones and now this false tumor. While hospitialized, a lumbar puncture was done and medication given to her. However the lumbar puncture caused her vein to collapse so they took it out. Next, they did a procedure where they snaked a a type of flexible wire through her artery in up her arm to send medication directly through the artery, past the heart.
284078 tn?1282616698 I hope anyone who uses Topamax for any reason is fully aware of the serious risk of acute narrow angle glaucoma. I had read several articles about it but saw it firsthand last week. As usual on my quiet weekend off I got the dreaded call from the emergency room, again. This time about a woman on Topamax for 7 days who seemed to have lost almost all her vision 12 hours after increasing her dose per her doctor's instructions.
Avatar n tn All of a sudden, I have experienced joint pain and stiffness. I found out that topamax can lead to these side effects. however, I have gradually gone off the topamax and have quit taking it for approximately 4 - 5 days. Today I am still stiff (shoulders, knee, wrist and ankles) and my ankles are swollen. Do you think this is still a side effect of Topamax in my system?
1415174 tn?1453243103 I took Zantac for a few months and the pain went away. I generally have no symptoms. Lately, I was put on Topamax for my migraine and migraine associated vertigo and a side effect is GI reflux. Twice now I have been eating spicy food and I will be almost finished eating and no problems then I will take a bite and suddenly get burning in my throat like fire (no feeling of regurgitation or anything then I drink something and cough and cough and can't talk for a little while and it goes away.
Avatar f tn Hi, I am currently on an increasing dosage of topamax for suspected seizures - although the seizures are very mild and random. I am not the type of person who likes to take medication and I have had a read on a couple of different forums about topamax and there seems to be a lot of negativity surrounding the drug with some pretty scary side effects. Can anyone enlighten me with some success stories?? Thanks, from New Zealand!
Avatar f tn It can cause extreme weight loss, severe dehydration, brain fog, memory loss, kidney stones and more. Treatment - stop the topamax, start estrogen replacement. I went from not having the energy to shampoo my hair, or take care of my children, home, work, etc, because of a medication and a lack of needed hormones. I also changed my diet to cut out as much processed food as possible.
Avatar n tn I have recently been diagnosed with epilepsy (although it may be 'probable epilepsy'). I am not convinced that I have epilepsy as all the tests (CT, MRI, EEGs (various ones including the week long video monitor), holter, bloodwork, etc. ) came back normal. (At least as far as I have ever been told there is nothing in those tests to indicate epilepsy...but I guess also, nothing to rule it out either.
1100598 tn?1413127426 A few weeks ago I had a very painful menstrual period, followed by occasional pelvic pain upon urination and a brownish yellow sediment in my urine. The pain radiated up into my flanks upon urination. I went to my doctor who did a urine dip which was completely normal. He decided to treat me for a UTI based upon my symptoms and gave me a 3 day course of Macrobid. The symptoms cleared up and then returned within 2 days of finishing the medication.
