Thumb pain from typing

Common Questions and Answers about Thumb pain from typing

finger

Avatar n tn Of late, I have noticed mild pain in my right hand and wrist especially when on the computer. The pain is more neuralgic type and not necessarily bone or muscle pain. I feel it is also finger specific, especially all my fingers other than my thumb and pinkie all of which I use to move the cursor. I am afraid I may have carpal tunnel. Please do suggest what to do now.
Avatar n tn This is not the usual way that anxiety expresses itself, but it is sometimes the way an early form of osteoarthritis starts, but that depends on how old you are, or if you are postmenopausal. The thumb may be from typing, but the other leg and arm pains may be arthritis. Anxiety would be a remote possibility from what you describe.
Avatar m tn burning/stinging sensation on the back of both hands when writing, holding a book or using computer mouse, searing tricep pain and shooting stinging pain from hands into forearms and shoulders (not exactly a straight traveling pain but more diffuse through arm when using fingers for typing, texting or holding things. All symptoms bilateral. Nov: saw internist who suspected cervical disk/nerve issue. MRI of neck showed only minor hypertrophy.
Avatar m tn Hello, It can be bursitis or tendonitis. Bursitis is inflammation or irritation of a bursa, a small sac located between a bone and muscle, skin, or tendon. Tendinitis is inflammation or irritation of the tendon, which is a thick cord that attaches muscle to bone. DeQuervain's tendinitis results from overuse of the thumb tendons, often caused by repeated pinching with the thumb while moving the wrist. It can occur with activities such as writing, gardening, or fine handiwork.
Avatar n tn When I was typing, I noticed that my right thumb strated tingling. I thought the tingling sensation would go away in a couple of hours after I finished typing. But it didn't go away but it's been tingling over a month. I went to see my PCP two weeks after I felt tingling in my right thumb. She told me that I might have Carpul Tunnel Syndrome, Rhuematoid Arthritis (since my grandmother had one), or DeQuervain's Syndrome.
1792792 tn?1315355724 ve noticed that writing for a certain amount of time will bring pain (some times severe pain) to my wrist and thumb. Considering I live for writing and typing (how else am I going to write my stories), this gets very bothersome. I've tried wearing wrist braces (it was suggested by a few people) but then I just end up writing while wearing the brace and it gets pretty painful.
Avatar f tn All those thing can cause some or all of your symptoms. Your thumb (as you have learned) may be experiencing referred pain - meaning coming from another portion of that extremity. But again you know your body best. We could do all kinds of guessing but only your PCP will have the right answers. Rest the entire area - if ice helps apply it several times a day - heat will only increase the inflammation in the nerves or joint. Please let us know how you are doing.
Avatar m tn The other possibility is Scalene Myofascial Pain Syndrome. When scalene muscle is the cause of pain, the pain is referred chest, inner lining of scapula, shoulder, posterior and lateral sides of the arm right up to the thumb and index finger.
Avatar m tn Take frequent breaks from typing and move your wrists around. If the pain gets more severe, you may have to see an orthopedist. If the doctor suggests surgery, ask about physical therapy before doing surgery. I hope you get better soon.
Avatar f tn I too have the problem on the top of my thumb. Only one thumb. Always the same thumb. My dermatologist said it was eczema and gave me a script for a steroid cream betamethasone I believe. It does help some but I have to use it every night. He also said to wrap it in Saran Wrap after I apply the cream. I have not found that helpful at all. I am a nurse and I wash my hands a lot and wear the non latex gloves.
Avatar n tn Symptoms begin with numbness and tingling of the first three or two fingers from the thumb side (twitch is also possible). Nerve conduction studies are quite diagnostic. Treatment is usually by splints and steroid injections. Surgery may be required in some cases. This condition is common in those who use the key board, mouse etc a lot—like in computers or in typing jobs. Please consult your PCP for primary examination followed by proper referral. Take care!
Avatar n tn I had my surgery Fri. July 24, 2009 and it feels great!! no more pain and as you can see i am typing with out a problem. Good luck and stay away from pain meds they will not help and will stop you froim using the finger . just keep moving your hand and fingers and the pain will go away quickly.
1830047 tn?1321667793 It has a dulled pain sensation though. Kinda hard to describe. It has almost constant pain on the inside, probably nerve pain, but a dulled sensation to pain on the outside, like if I drop something on it or stub my toe it doesn't hurt quite so bad... I hope it goes away soon for you and stays away. Unfortunately, parasthesias seem to come and go. Boooooooo!!!! So are you now having problems on both the right and left sides?
299912 tn?1341623100 Then over the course of the next few weeks, I started to noticed a very very small amount of tenderness and pain in my left thumb, about the medial area of the thumb metacarpal. I still had (and have) range of motion and though I have noticed a slight decrease in strength, it is mainly relegated to the pain. When I grip around something (like a can), no real pain or issues.
Avatar m tn t broken-just by looking at it. The last few days it has gotten better but it still hurts (bearable pain) like when i am typing now or try to hold a pan. The surgeon finally sent me for x-rays after she pressed on my thumb and it hurt a lot. She wrote scaphoid on the referral. I sent her images of the x-rays.
Avatar n tn The pain feel like it shoots right through the nerve of my thumb and the palm feels almost like the pain from a bruise. Like if some were to punch you and it left a bruise and was really sore for a few days only it constantly feels like that. If I stretch all my fingers out then I can really feel it. It is also really sore when I try to bend the thumb or pinch anything between the thumb and index finger.
Avatar n tn s getting harder to use the left index finger for much of anything (including typing) without increasing the pain. Is this something I should have a dr. look at asap? (My regular doctor won't be available for another week.) TIA for any replies.
Avatar m tn As I was typing on my computer I noticed that my right thumb was shaking and it got me worried. It only shakes if I bend it at a 90degree angle but it is still very worrisome. About 3 hours ago I did scrub the bathtub and I thought that might have something to do with it but it has not stopped shaking in 3 hours.
Avatar n tn i been having proplems with my right hand cant feel my thumb or finger and a get to anxiety
Avatar f tn Lately i have had numbness in my thumb, index finger, midfle finger, ring finger and pinky finger as well as pain in this fingers. My wrist, forearm, and elbow gets pain in it. I also get pain when i grip something too long. I also have a hard time laying in bed typing. Is this tendons, ligaments, nerve, inflammation?
903476 tn?1242237037 My other issues would have not caused joint pain no one ever got arthritis from asthma. But the pain has got from 0 to 60 literally over night and now my whole arm is hurting but I think it's just cuz I'm trying not to move it around to much to not aggravate my thumb. There is only very slight swelling it's so slight it took me a few hours to even notice it was swelling there is no discolouration or feeling warm to the touch.
Avatar n tn About 6 months ago I started having pains in the joint on the inside of my right wrist after a week or so the pain moved up to my thumb and down my forearm. About a month later it started on my left wrist as well. The pain never really goes away but at times it's a burning shooting pain that is almost unbearable! I have trouble doing simple things like opening jars or just lifting my grandson and the fact that it's both wrists just makes everyday tasks difficult.
Avatar f tn This then presses on the nerve which then causes a pain right up to the elbow. Thumb and pointer finger are first to be affected. Often proper working style, working without bending wrist, using smooth movements to operate the mouse and key pad, and relaxing the joints of finger, wrist and arm in between helps. A wrist support or arm support too helps and you have computer chairs with support for your spine and arm.
Avatar n tn I am so sick of this numbness in my fingers and thumb. Does typing help keep the fingers moving thus causing less numbness. Thanks.
Avatar n tn It was stiff from the splint at first but after a day or two I could move my thumb better, but it still hurt below the metacarpal joint when I pressed on it. So I went back to the dr, who said it would take time to get over the stiffness, also it didn't seem to hurt on the spot that day. That was 2 weeks ago, and this spot is still hurting enough that I'm worried. My thumb still hurts to bend across my palm, and to open thing that requires twisting. Could I have reinjuried it?
Avatar f tn Maybe if you held a scrunched up facecloth in each hand and squeezed that from time to time, your night time pain would drop to the level of your daytime discomfort (or considering your hands are under less fluid pressure while laying down, perhaps less discomfort than daytime).
Avatar m tn Wrist Tendonitis (DeQuervains Tendonitis) can be defined as an irritation and swelling of the sheath or tunnel which surrounds the tendons of the thumb. Typically the pain will be present at the front of the wrist. Pain will be initiated when grasping an object or pinching the fingers." Please let us know how you are doing. I will look forward to your next post. Take Care, Tuck R.I.C.
