Common Questions and Answers about Synthroid generic name

synthroid

Avatar n tn My pharmacist switched my Synthroid 125mcg to generic, I have noticed a HUGE change ...insomnia, low blood pressure, hyperactivity....has anyone notice this as well? The pharmacist said there would be no difference if I switched to the generic...
Avatar f tn If you are required to take the generic, find a generic that will work for you. The name of the lab is always on the bottle. And be SURE each time your scrip is filled that the same lab produced it. Everyone says negative things about generics. And sometimes it is warranted. But not always. For instance the generic of claritin and some heart and blood pressure drugs makes them affordable and they work fine. My husband gets generics of a lot of his meds and he does very well.
7991152 tn?1396061810 All Synthroid is levothyroxine sodium, but not all levothyroxine sodium is Synthroid. There are several "brands" of levothyroxine sodium... Synthroid and Levoxyl are the 2 main ones. Then there are also several manufacturers of generic levothyroxine sodium. All manufacturers are allowed a certain "tolerance", meaning their products can vary by a certain amount. Some argue that generics are not as good as brand names.
Avatar n tn You should not accept a generic if your perscription is for Synthroid. The generic contains different inert ingredients, and the strength of the generic is not as uniform as the brand name.
404389 tn?1217030704 Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothroid, Unithroid. Be careful though. They are the same main ingredient but use different "binders". Personally I cannot take the generic and only do well on the Synthroid - others are quite opposite. You will find many of us out here who swear by a particular brand (or the generic) and refuse to switch because of bad experiences. If you are going to switch, talk to your endo first so your labs can be monitored.
Avatar f tn ve taken, both, generic levothyroxine (T4) and liothyronine (T3), as well, as brand name Synthroid and Cytomel. I did better on on generic levo than I did on Synthyroid... I've been taking generic liothyronine for over 5 yrs and have done just as well as I did on Cytomel. I don't think you'll have any difficulty, with generic T3, but if you do, you can always go back to Cytomel.
Avatar n tn What is the generic name, chemical name, classification and contraindications for Lyvoxil?
Avatar n tn I take synthroid and was wondering if the generic is just as good? Someone told me to never take the generic so I pay extra for the name brand. TIA!
Avatar m tn I have been on Synthroid 0.1 for 10 years without any issues. My doctor called in my prescription and the pharmacy gave me the generic form. I was out of the Synthroid so I've been taking the generic for about a week until my new prescription for the brand name arrives. I have had diarrhea for two days. The only thing I've done differently is take the generic drug. Do you think this would be causing the diarrhea?
Avatar n tn Levothyroxine is generic. Synthroid is a name brand of the same drug. It is actually prefered by most Endo's, because it is a little more reliable from batch to batch. It is made with different fillers than what you have been used to with the Levo. Some people do not get along with it. Lactose or something is in it. It's possible you're allergic to the inert ingredients of the Synthroid.
87651 tn?1259602403 He also recommended that I do a name brand (like Synthroid) rather than a Generic. Of course I still have my thyroid so what the heck do I know?
Avatar f tn Hello, I am 61 year old male in pretty good health. I was just (2 months) diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease by my new doctor during a comprehensive physical. He is highly regarded which is why I switched from prior doc. Hypothyroidism does not run in my family history. He prescribed 25mcg Synthroid & insisted I avoid the generic. Follow up test still showed no change in TS level so he increased dose to 50 w follow up in 3 mos. Cigna's drug service sent generic levothyroxine.
Avatar m tn Hi ando... Yes, it's okay to do that; I've done that and didn't have any problems with it. Some people will tell you that Synthroid is so much better than generic, but I actually did better on generics. In my opinion, you should be fine.
535882 tn?1396576685 0) never came down, When I started being treated by an Endo he explained that Levothyroxine ( A Generic) was not as consistant as a Name Brand (Synthroid) he put me on Synthroid 100 mg and within 6 weeks my Tsh dropped to 0.078, now I am on 75 mg and due back at the end of May for another blood work. Although everyone is different, some do better on some drugs and some do not.
393419 tn?1228447393 When this months supply runs out, I plan on switching over to synthroid, my doctor recommends the name brand (and gave me a sample box) and I am lucky that my prescription plan makes it very affordable. Here are my questions: 1. should I stop taking the generic now and switch over? 2. if i stick with the generic for the next 2 weeks am i messing my system up? 3. what, if anything can i expect from the switch over thanks for taking the time to listen to a nervous newbie. :) be well!
Avatar f tn He was VERY adiment that when I go to the pharmacy to pick up my prescription to check it out BEFORE I pay for it because he wrote NO SUBSTITUTION and does not want me taking the generic for it. My insurance is denying the brand name and I am fine paying out of pocket for it for now, but would like to resolve this issue. Is there a difference in the brand name vs the generic???
Avatar n tn I agree that there is debate over the use of generic vs brand name. I actually did better on generic levo than I did synthroid, but everyone is different.
7074596 tn?1387754708 Yes, Levoxyl is the same as Levothyroxine which is the generic name . Synthroid is the Brand name for Levothyroxine. So it is the same drug.
Avatar n tn I had no changes in diet, medication, supplements or method of taking my meds. I feel strongly the generic medication is the culprit. I contacted the manufactuer and will be sending the remainder of my prescription to them for testing. Is there a way to test the medication independent of the drug company?
744962 tn?1270942038 Cytomel is the name brand for synthetic T3 med. Synthroid is a name brand for synthetic T4 med. Some people do better taking the name brands; however, some of us do fine on the generics. Still others do better on T4/T3 combo, dessicated, such as Armour, NatureThroid, etc. I'm on both T3 and T4 med, both generic and doing well. Do you have symptoms? If so, what are they? What are your latest test results? Can you post them along with the lab's reference ranges?
Avatar f tn I have been hearing alot of negative things about generic synthroid. My sister in law has been taking synthroid for years and said that her pharmacy changed her to generic levoxyl and she has since had problems. I was changed from synthroid to levoxyl but was told it is not a generic it is another type of thyroid medicine. Just need clarification.
Avatar f tn When I found out I had thyroid trouble in early 2004, I took generic T4 pills because my doctor had told me that there was no difference between brand name pills and generic pills, other than the higher price for brand name pills. However, my blood test scores bounced up and down like mountains and valleys. Then I read that we can't take generics because they're all made according to different recipes. Well, that explained the peaks and valleys in my blood tests.
Avatar f tn I have several different strengths of synthroid (every time they change my dose, it seems like they do it right after I've refilled my script) and none of them say "synthroid" on them. They all have the strength (100,88,50, etc) on one side and appear to be blank on the other side (either that or my bifocals aren't working well tonight LOL).
1107393 tn?1263417738 Last year, the FDA determined that generic levothyroxine sodium drugs can be replacements for Synthroid and other brand-name thyroid medications because they're "bioequivalent" that is, essentially the same as their counterparts The American Association for Clinical Endocrinologists and the Endocrine Society, emphasize that, in general, they support generic drugs and the discounts they offer consumers and health providers.
Avatar f tn My doctor said the reason he would insist on name brand, because is about 10% discrepancy between band name and generic. Because how bad I feel so far, I would pay 100 a month gladly, just to feel close to normal. (I don't think my insurance will cover much, they send out a letter few months ago that they have a Synthroid generic on their list) Good luck!
