Avatar f tn Google something like the Mayo Clinic or NIH websites and see if they say why quitting smoking might have any effect -- I'd think, just logically, it could only be positive, but it is a stressful thing to do -- anytime you quit an addictive drug or any drug that affects brain neurotransmitters it can be a stressful thing to do and maybe that's why they want you to consult your doc.

486038 tn?1300063367 I've not been to the Jacksonville Mayo or the MS clinic in Houston, I'm sorry about that. I have heard a lot of good things about the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and Dr. Elliot Frohman who works there. I'm sure if you google his name you can find out much more than I can tell you about, here.
Avatar m tn Truthfully, I've heard one of the best MS Clinics in the US is the Mellen Center at Cleveland Clinic. You might try checking out http://www.mscare.org They list all the clinics available, etc. My neuro said the clinic at Cincinatti isn't that great but thinks Cleveland Clinic is really good. I've never heard of the Mayo Clinic being highly rated for MS, but more for heart desease.

467579 tn?1289402969 In the meantime, you and other smokers should take advantage of currently available medicines and state-sponsored, smoking cessation programs. Avatar m tn I have recently been approved by VA for a chantix prescription, and expect to start the cessation program within days. Current smoking was not associated with altered risk for developing overt hypothyroidism (OR: 0.92 (0.57-1.48)). CONCLUSIONS: The risk of having overt autoimmune hypothyroidism diagnosed is more than 6 fold increased the first 2 years after cessation of smoking. Clearly smoking cessation is vital to prevent death and severe disease.
Avatar f tn Well, like I mentioned, the first step would be to quit smoking, to prevent further damage to the lungs. And also immediately on cessation of smoking you will not see any improvement. If there is bronchospasm, this can be relieved by bronchodilators. To improve lung function practice breathing exercises. If the oxygenation is adequate, supplemental oxygen therapy may be needed. Any infection of the lungs, need to be tackled immediately.
