Common Questions and Answers about Side effects of seroquel in the elderly

seroquel

Avatar n tn I have multiple sclerosis, depression, and a sleep problem. My ms meds[baclofen/tizanidine] and 300mg of seroquel gave me a memory loss big-time!!!. The ER cut all my meds in half[dc'd the tizan]. I never want to go that high again. I couldn't remember my grandchildren!!! I did get withdrawals from it.[Was jumpy/agitated/anxious]for several days. I'm on 150mg now. My dreams at night are vivid, and it's like being in a reality show!
1246883 tn?1285547973 I immediately started to gain weight. And stopped the Seroquel immediately (mid Dec). I know this is one of the side effects. I gained about 5lbs. Being 5'9" and weighing 135, I felt the 5 extra pounds would come off with eating better and a few more yoga classes . But the weight kept coming. I got down to a dietary intake of about 1000 cals. But that mad no difference.
Avatar f tn My Doctor just switch my medication from 150 mg of Effexor XR to 400 mg of Seroquel XR. I dropped my dosage of Effexor gradually but I still experienced terrible withdrawl. Now I am experiencing bad side effects, " I'm guessing ths", from the Seroquel. I have gained weight in my stomach area very rapidly, I have pain and stiffness in my legs, 24 hour dry mouth and sinuses and I feel like I could cry at the drop of a hat.
Avatar f tn Same thing happened to me a few times after taking the drug for seemingly no reason - limbs stopped moving soo sedated couldn't even speak and at the same time heartbeat went through the roof. Scary. However it hasn't happened for a few months now and I seem to have got used to it - perhaps the doc has started you on too high of a dose?. I'm on 500mg. These kinds of side effects are exacerbated by alcohol especially.
Avatar m tn He agreed so tonite i will see if the side effects are lessened. Because of work I can only get about 7 to 8 hours sleep. Thank-you for responding, I will keep you posted.
Avatar n tn Combining Ambien and Seroquel can cause central nervous system and respiratory depressant effects, especially in elderly or debilitated patients. Please discuss with your doctor for alternate medications. In the meantime, I would strongly caution you not to drive or operate heavy machinery while on these medications as you might injure yourself or others. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
1286779 tn?1400012806 I think Jaybay just gave you great advice. Lots of elderly have different side effects than the more common ones. Medications can easily interact and sometimes medications that have been fine for a long time all of a sudden aren't. A gerentologist probably is the best place to look for answers. When my mom was alive, we had a few kinks with her medications.
802234 tn?1237830136 Well, if that is the case, I'd say your son is way over medicated. I have a problem with doctors prescribing anti-psychotics to people with OCD. I've never taken them, but I know some folks that have and they just moped around like zombies. (The "cure" was worse than the disease in my opinion) Then on top of that I see your son is taking one of the old tricyclic anti-depressants (imipramine) and Clonozapam, so I'm not surprised he's weak or tired.
4592241 tn?1359813138 I know this is an old post, but I just started on a low dose of abilify (5mg)about two weeks ago. At first I took it at night because it said it would make you drowsy. That worked fine for a few days, then I started waking up really early like 3am wound like a spring. So, I thought I'll take in the morning, push past the drowsiness and be wound up in the daytime. Right? Nope, if I take it in the daytime, I want to sleep all day even if I take a short nap at lunch.
574118 tn?1305135284 If i cut these two any time nothing will happen seriously except in the long run. In fact i did that many times in the course of my bloody illness. But as soon as i cut seroquel i feel it right away with my mixed states. I know each of these nasty drugs causes something or another but seroquel is by excellence the worst. Of course lithium is terrific in this regard (dehydration, tremors, renal....) tegretol same and depakote (cystic ulcers,) etc....etc... but seroquel is different.
Avatar m tn Medications in the elderly is tricky, just as it is in children. The geriatric population tends to be more sensitive to medications and often require closer monitoring. Is your grandmother being seen by a doctor who specializes in geriatric patients? If not, that may be something to think about. The only medication you listed that I could imagine might be an issue is the Seroquel, the other medications shouldn't really cause a behavioral/mood issue.
Avatar f tn When I was at the psych. hospital in 1991 a good number of the people of the age range of 50+ had tardive dyskinesia. I knew very little about the condition then and I was told it was because of the amount of medication they had been on in the past when I finally got an "honest" answer from a psychiatrist there but even for their knowledge then that was untruthful. In reality it was the statistical probability of it ("5% per person per year with the typical antipsychotics, 2.
Avatar f tn m a little afraid of the seroquel. i develpoed a bad twitching in the right side of my face from the abilify. and it was only 1mg. hope someone has some answers.
Avatar f tn My main worry is if it could be Tardives dyskinesia or beneign essential blepharospasm due to the use of Seroquel for 10 days with other meds. How great is the risk of taking it for 10 days? I think the dosage was 25 - 50 mg. a day. Would it be likely to show up this long after using it? I have been tapering off the Vistaril and Trazadone the past 2-3 weeks. Also, I know that lack of sleep, stress & anxiety, & fibromyalgia also can cause muscle twitching.
Avatar f tn These type of side effects are often worse in the beginning but often improve over time. Make sure to inform your psychiatrist about this and they can tell you how to proceed. Part of it may be the interactions between the various medications. Are they in the process of transferring you from one medication to another? Lamictal requires a very slow titration rate but only a psychiatrist would understand the clinical specifics and how they apply.
2010625 tn?1329372056 Yes some of those side effects may be of concern but only a psychiatrist would understand them in full so it might be worthwhile to page them to make sure. Some of this may be related to blood pressure drop when starting to stand (called orthostatic hypotention) which is a common medication side effect that I have experienced as well. It would be worth discussing with them. Also it may be related to dosage and titration issues.
605458 tn?1539228808 I used to take regular Seroquel with no sexual side effects. I was recently changed to Seroquel XR and the side effects are so different than regular Seroquel, and one of them is sexual side effects. Anyone else? The other new med I am on is Amitiza, which is for Irritable Bowel Syndrome and didn't have sexual side effects listed. I have been under a lot of new stress lately, but that has never caused this problem in the past.
Avatar n tn I too am having nerve problems with my ulner nerve, numb, tingling along the inside of my left arm along with the pinky, ring finger and side of my palm. In addition to that, my inside left calf, ball of my foot and big toe are the same. The big problem is that I have an undiagnosed eye pain that is preventing me keeping my eyes open for too long at a time. I hope you find a solution to your problems.
Avatar f tn Lamictal is one of the greatest drugs out there for bipolar i had no side effects at all
Avatar f tn this happens to me also tremors left side of body but my tongue moves its crazy to have permanent side effects TD keep trying your not alone ok
Avatar m tn I am not liking the side effects on seroquel. So I am now going on Trazadone? I am addicted to benzos, so I can't take them. Does anyone know anything about trazadone for sleep/anxiety?
1696867 tn?1312609591 I started on Abilify for my Bi Polar 2 weeks ago. After 2 days I had to halve the dose, as the side effects were so debilatating (?), but the side effects are still horrendous. I have no ability to concentrate, problems focussing, shake/tremors and no energy at all. The only good thing is that my moods seem better than they have in ages. My question is, how long do I need to put up with the side effects?
Avatar f tn Yes antipsychotics can commonly cause temporary movement disorders such as akathesia (motor restlessness) and dystonia (stiffness). All of this can be treated with a side effect pill. Speak to your psychiatrist about this.
