I was sent to a GI and scoped, stating esophagitis and small hiatal hernia. I was placed on Protonix once a day. I felt better, so went off, only to have a year of on and off again chest pain/breathing issues and on/off PPI medication. During this year, I have also had a full cardiac workup and full pulmonary function test, both of which were perfect. A few months ago I was sent back to the GI and he wanted another scope. This time he said GERD and to stay on medication.
So I started weaning off of Protonix, by taking the protonix every other day last week, then every two days this week. I took my last dose three days ago, and felt great yesterday, but today, I feel slight pain...
My question is
1)Do you think it's a good idea to switch completely to Pepcid now? And is it safe to do so? Cause I've been taking Protonix for a while, and could interact with Pepsid?
Then when I went to my doctor Thursday, she switched me to Protonix. If they are basically the same, could Protonix work for me if Prilosec OTC didn't? I'd really like to know because I've had this problem for almost 3 months now and I'm tired of eating plain food.
Anyone out there on Protonix? I was diagnosed with acid reflux and was put on Nexium which helped slightly with my burping but I was still getting stomach aches. I went for an abdominal ultrasound, endescopy and CT scan with IV contrast and all came back fine. My Dr just switched me to Protonix.
The Dr gave me Nexium, but I was still getting upper stomach pain and pressure in the chest an back. I was switched to Protonix and it seemed to help with the upper stomach pain right under the breastbone. I'm taking two pills a day. Does anyone know how long Protonix takes to work? I was told that some PPI's could take 4 to six weeks to take affect.
I was diagnosed with gastritis and given Protonix for it. The doctor at the ER told me to continue taking the medications my asthma doctor had prescribed, including Prednisone which causes bad gastritis apparently? So I am now currently on Protonix, Prednisone, Zyrtec (for my allergies), and am taking my nebulizer (albuterol for my asthma). My asthma seems to be fine, but I seem to be getting anxiety over one of the medications I am taking and I don't know which one.
Since I have been taking Protonix for GERD, my heart seems to be pounding in my throat. This has never happened to me before and is alarming. My blood pressure has always been low. Is this normal? Is there anything else I can take beside Protonix?
Prevacid, Nexium, Protonix, Aciphex, Zantac, and Pepcid are all used to treat reflux. You can ask you doctor who will know best which one is least likely to cause you dizzyness.
What are other strong treatment for GERD aside from taking esomeprazole and domperidone? Because I have been taken it for almost a year now and I tried to change my diet but still it come and goes.
The best medicines I have been prescribed are Nexium and Protonix. Protonix has a generic available so is inexpensive and works perfectly for me. Studies have shown Nexium to be consistently the most effective but it is more expensive and not always covered by every health insurance plan. United Healthcare for example does not cover Nexium.
I started looking at questions about PPIs and weight gain and found other things that concerned me. My VA Dr is shall we say less than desirable.
Here are my issues. I have been taking protonix for many years. I took another type before it but VA decided it was too expensive and quit providing it. Over the years I have had significant weight gain, a lot of which I attributed to my por eating habits and decreasing exercise due to severe joint problems. Now I'm not so sure.
I have posted in the pain management forum, but not in this one yet. I've been having bad neck and shoulder and shoulder blade pain on the right side for a few months. I have been taking Protonix since May, 40mgs once every evening. Because I'm not getting relief with chiropractic care or anything else for that matter, I started thinking about medication and side effects. The protonix s the only thing that could possibly be the culprit.
I was prescribed protonix (40mg/daily) for 2 months after an endoscopy showed some inflammation in my stomach (ruled out ulcer and celiac). After 1 month of daily use I started to feel awful - my hands and arms were tingling, I felt off balance, like I was walking through a haze at all times, like I might pass out more than once a day, and started having what I thought were sensory migraines.
Been on basicaly every med on the market and recently I am on 2x daily protonix which has completley gotten rid of the nausea. My bloating (indigestion?) and belching throughout the day has gotten worse. It gets worse by the end of the day and after I eat dinner sometimes lasts for an hour.
I also just started a new weight lifting routine to try and counter this weight loss I had in the past 3 years (dropped from 150 to like 135). I started this the same time as my 2x daily protonix.
She was prescribed 40mg of Protonix once a day. She has been taking this medication for one week, and has been experiencing dizziness and nausea. She weighs about 120 lbs. I looked online, and it appears that these are side effects that some patients experience. My question is: would Nexium pose the same problems for her?
Went to hospital a month ago for bleeding ulcers of the esophagus, and was given bags full of Protonix, IV for a week. Was sent home taking 40mg 2 X a day. Had microalbumin well over 400 when I had labs done for checkup. So Dr. ordered a kidney ultrasound and a nodule was found in my right kidney. I've seen several law suits about Protonix causing kidney failure!
No evidence of celiac desease. Negative for giardia or other pathogenic organisms. Neg for helicobacter pylori.

Diagnosis: Consistent with Barrett's Esophagus, negative for dysplasia. Esophageal mucosa with mild nonspecific reactive changes.
