Avatar f tn t just go giving any medication without even knowing what you are treating....prednisone use in cats often leads to diabetes. Please describe what's wrong and I will try and help with some suggestions, I know yr only trying to help them but inappropriate use of meds can be fatal...
Avatar n tn Hi there...a lot of veterinarians have issues with long term usage of steroids in dogs or cats. There is the possibility that continued use of prednisone can cause overactive adrenal glands resulting in too much cortisol in the body (this is one of the body's natural steroids). Since steroids suppress the immune system, llike zodiacqueen has mentioned, chronic recurrent infections can occur.
Avatar n tn In October 2008, I was put on 60mg of Prednisone after liver biopsy revealed a rapid progression from an earlier biopsy, I now had non-alcoholic cirrhosis. In March 2009 at the Mayo Clinic I was diagnosed with AIH (autoimmune hepatitis) with non-alcoholic cirrhosis. I was placed on 50mg of Imuran, which was adjusted to 100mg and my Prednisone was gradually reduced 10mg. In September 2010 my Prednisone was being reduced by 2.5 every 6 weeks.
910930 tn?1242959206 I'd suggest to give her the Prednisone first thing in the morning. It's like for humans I believe and humans take Prednisone at 7AM. Side effects will probably be the same than for humans: a voracious appetite! Try to dose her dry food daily so she only eats the amount the is supposed to eat. She may be hyper at first as well. She may also get bloated. Long term side effects: diabetes, osteoroposis.
Avatar f tn When we got Harley he was with a group of cats that were living in the woods. I was able to capture him and two others. All three of them had such bad teeth problems that after a time they had all their teeth pulled except for one cat, they left him four. The vet was unable to determine how old they were because of the poor teeth. I would think it would take maybe four years to have them get so bad, guessing, so that would make Harley 12 now.

514349 tn?1272801633 Two weeks ago, I had one of my 16 year old cats to the vet. She palpated a mass in his abdomen and couldn't tell if it was a tumor or something that would pass (if you get my drift). She suggested I wait a while and bring him back to see if it was still there. The follow-up was this morning and the vet's assistant (trainee) indicated that the mass was still there and said it was likely lymphoma. She advised that an ultrasound was in order to properly diagnose the issue.
Avatar n tn He was originally started on Alkeran once a week and prednisone every other day but the Alkeran had an extremely negative effect on his CBC and made no improvement on his globulin levels. In Oct he was started on Luekeran 2mg every other day and prednisone on the off days. He takes his prednisone in a liquid form and that was originally about 1 1/4 cc's and that was dropped to about half after one month. After 4 weeks on Luekeran his globulin came down from nearly 11 to 9.
Avatar m tn Thank you for the reply. I would have never thought prednisone withdrawal would be so difficult. I am hangin' in there and staying positive. Thank you very much Foggy2. It seems the fatigue is the hardest to deal with. I have never experienced fatigue in such an extreme fashion. I am concerned with the last month which will be 1mg every other day. So far it seems I am just one of those people that do better dropping .5mg at a time. Now that I think back I should have been dropping.
Avatar n tn In a recent study, 30% of the cats positive for heartworms were reported to be indoor only cats - so all cats are susceptible. A heart ultrasound would also help diagnose the problem and determine the best treatment. This heart ultrasound can also look for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)- a common heart problem in cats. Our office cat developed signs of this at age 8, but not much cough was present at that time.
Avatar m tn My 70 lb 12 year old golden retriever has a skin condition and was on Prednisone last year for about three weeks. She broke out with the same rash a few days ago, and (stupidly) instead of taking her to the vet, I gave her the same dosage of medicine that we had left over from the last time. I gave her 20mg in the morning, 20 in the evening, and then realized that I didn't have enough to complete the course for three weeks.
Avatar f tn Has anyone used prednisone to lessen methadone or other opiate withdrawal symptoms?
Avatar n tn She had been losing weight, but other than that was just as mischievous and energetic as always. Has anyone had experience with lymphoma in cats and has anyone experienced having their cat treated for it?. Thanks for any info.
Avatar n tn Thank you for your input. I am assuming that the hives are caused by my cats, I did not discuss with my medical oncologist yet. I was wondering when my WBCs get normal, will I no longer have this allergy. From what I'm seeing on your response, if it is an allergy to my cats, It will not go away. I've had my cats 10 years and never had an issue prior to chemo?
1574314 tn?1296201282 Just be careful about the amount of prednisone you are taking. I was in the same situation and thought there was no hope until I my lung collapsed and I went to a different hospital and new pulmo's. they started over with my pulmonary meds and my lungs turned around 100% until I found out what the prednisone did to my joints and the 3 replacements I now need.Hope you feel better Randy.
Avatar f tn However, the prednisone accelerated the osteoarthritis in my knees and hips, and I am now trying to get off prednisone. And this is the real problem of prednisone. For most people with osteoarthritis in addition to whatever else, prednisone reduces healing in tissues that are inflamed (by reducing inflammation which is part of healing). This is not true for every kind of osteoarthritis..
975514 tn?1324997938 symptoms- horribly aching joints, pain, anxiety, sweats, something that sounds a lot like opiate withdrawal if you ask me. But in my case I never was taking that much??? So I am puzzled by my reactions coming off of them. Do people with thyroid or adrenal problems have exaggerated responses to prednisone? I am still waiting for all of my test results from the endo, but I am very curious to know about this one if any one has any input. Thanks in advance.
Avatar m tn One day I suddenly got severe neck pain down shoulders , arms down back and both legs sciatic nerve. I had neck and back issues with surgeries in both in the past and had pain in these areas, but now the pain is unreal, so severe it's torture. It's severe nerve pain . I quickly got off and wound up in withdrawal, I have to go up again and taper slowly. The pain no ever left after getting off and I'm afraid it's permanent. I read similar stories where the pain was permanent.
Avatar m tn I had tests done which showed I have major allergies to cats. My ex-wife was a cat breeder and we had 5 to 8 cats living in the house at any given time. I moved out in 2005 and have since lived in 3 other residences. All with no cats or pets of any kind but the symptoms are still with me; Like you, my sinuses drain at night which is where my breathing and chest problems come from. I’ll check into the Guafenisen .
2048234 tn?1330814100 I was put on prednisone for my lungs. its a 7 day treatment but I am reading its very addictive. what do I do? I dont want to get addicted to anything else.

Avatar f tn A few days after the last dose the itching came back again with a vengeance and additional itching on my legs. The doctor again prescribed prednisone to taper but in smaller doses(day 1=40mg, etc). Again, I had relief while on the medicine. Days after stopping prednisone the itch came back again and was even worse. Since then my entire body is now itching (arms, legs, feet, hands, stomach, neck, back). There are no visible rashes, no blisters, no white lines.
Avatar n tn How long does prednisone stay in your system? I also have a racing heart and feel a little anxious. I am unsure if that is because I feel very hot or if it's just me experiencing anxiety. My face also feels a little tight and is dry. I appreciate any help you can offer me.
1716896 tn?1308880762 I had the same thing happen recently, when I was treated for Stevens-Johnson syndrome brought, a reaction to allpurinol. I was given prednisone in very high doses, tapering off gradually, usually over three week period. Each time I tapered down to about 10 MGS, the rashes and itching began. I want to know if the rash will remit on its own, because I've had four short rounds of prednisone already and would prefer to stay away from it if I can. But the itching is fierce!
