Common Questions and Answers about Neck and shoulder pain while sleeping

I have been experiencing pain for a couple months. Currently the pain gets so bad at times that I can't even think. I must confess that when this pain started I was sleeping on the couch for about a year. I tried physical therapy and it doesn't seem to work. Can someone please help.....
I know it took me over a year to put it together that any time I wore high heeled dress shoes, I would have upper back and neck pain for several days. One other thing I noticed in my case is sleeping later actually seemed to make it worse. When I sleep a whole 8-10 hrs, I wake up in pain. If I set an alarm for 5 hours, it is more of a stiffness. Good luck finding an explanation or cause & please post back if you find out something. I know the pain is unbearable.
Apply alternate warm and cold compresses, elevate the head while sleeping and take some over the counter NSAID analgesic(pain reliever) like ibuprofen(advil/motrin) or acetaminophen.Application of muscle relaxant to the part is also helpful. If the symptoms persist then pls get it evaluated from an orthopedician/neurologist and get cervical spondolysis, vertebrobasilar insufficiency and carotid sinus syndrome ruled out. Hope it helps. Take care and please do keep me posted. Kind regards.
I'm recently having trouble sleeping due to the acute numbness and pain to bilateral hand’s while sleeping. I get waken up by an intense pain and tingling sensation to both hands, which also radiates to my forearm sometimes. I shake my hands to stimulate circulation but only give some minor relief. I eventually fall asleep just to wake up again in about a hour later. I had this happen to me about a year ago and went always by its self.
Dr i have been bearing severe pain in left shoulder along with neck going to below the left ear.i am very worried what exactly it can be.if it's a symptom of spondilytis?
I've had a constant pain in my head, face, neck and shoulders for about 3 months. It never goes away although at times it's worse than others. My doctor tried me on Diclofenac and co-codamol and is now considering putting me on beta-blockers. I thought beta-blockers was for palpatations and hypertension, none of which I suffer from. I wondered if anyone had similar pain and has any answers for me as to what could be causing it.
I also get very frequent migraines that start in the back of my head that radiate to my forehead and right temple. And today for whatever reason, I got really bad neck, shoulder, and upper back pain, but my entire neck is sore even in the front, which is really odd because I've never experienced that before. I also get sick alot, and I'm usually always feeling ill. I did just start taking new meds, Prednisone and I take 3 200mg ibuprofen prescribed from the doctor.
An xray of your shoulder is useless unless you fractured or broke it. I say it is pain radiating from your neck that is aggravating your shoulder and I ain't no doctor. LOL Gettting a bath by your daughter and husband must have made you feel like an old lady! But I understand. My son has had to hold me up while walking to the bathroom numerous times. My doctor told me Friday that he cannot guarantee I will be back in school in August.
The mind is still in a state of sleep where physical movements are prevented so one doesn't act out dreams and cause injury while sleeping. I currently take Provigil (daytime) and Celexa (nightime). I also have trouble staying awake w/o Provigil. For years my sleepiness, irritability, etc. were blamed on depression. It has been a valid diagnosis as far as I can tell. I can function fairly well now. I am a 48 yr. old male. Hope this helps. I would seek out some studies via a neurologist.
For about three weeks now, I have had a lot of pain in my shoulder. This pain seems to originate in the back of the shoulder (feels like under the blade), and it runs down to my elbow area. My right thumb and index finger feel numb also. I think that this pain started after going camping and sleeping on a bad mattress on my right side for an extended period of time. This arm feels much weaker than normal. Lifting anything is much harder than it used to be.
Roll a towel and place it under your neck while sleeping on the back and between head and shoulder when lying on the side. Initially this will be uncomfortable but with time the acupressure will work. Use an analgesic cream or spray. Anti-inflammatory drugs help. Also, you must improve your posture while sitting and working. Take care! The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you.
Two weeks ago I woke up with the terrible pain in my left shoulder and lower neck. I work out a lot and have been under unusual stress. Bed I was sleeping in was terrible. I went to ER fearing a heart attack. All clear on that account. Doc told me I had a pinched nerve or severe muscle strain. Got hydrocodone and it helped some. Went on a 5 day cruise thinking it would be relaxing. Got a very vigorous massage - very bad decision.

I bought a new chair last weekend, and adjusted my computer height as well. I ice my neck and shoulder a couple times a day, and while at work, I keep a glass of ice on my desk, and put my hand around the glass when I'm not writing. It helps get me going again. The BEST thing has been wearing a soft rolled towel around my neck at night. That was a PT suggestion and it keeps my neck from jerking and hurting during the night. My neck pain had been keeping me from sleeping.

Back then I had severe pain when I turned my neck, it would start from neck down my shoulder to arm and hand with pain, tingling, and numbness but with little relief. At this time in 1989 this pain affected my left side only. I saw doctor immediately and started with conservative tx then physical therapy but nothing helped. Finally found a NS and Orth surgeon and agreed to the above surgery. Surgery went fine and pain went away.

and i started again on the beta blocker. Eventually, i was feeling great and sleeping well, and able to work again (after about two years of great misery and being broke, and facing a disciplinary at my old UK job) and was only on 40 mg propranalol a day. My world changed again in 2010 when my Mom called to tell me that she had been diagnosed with colon cancer.
I can't believe there are so many people suffering with similar symptoms. I have had neck and shoulder pain for quite a while now and have seen many specialists and I am unsure as to how to proceed. About two and a half years ago I began to have pain in my left shoulder. It would come and go and wasn't too debilitating so I didn't have it treated. After about six months of the pain, I started to develop neck pain that would go up to the back of my head, around the base of the skull.
Also my neck and right shoulder hurt feels numb tender and hurts from my shoulder to the base of my head. With all of this I have non-stop headaches.
Today, I still get sharp pains in the left shoulder, extreme sore shoulder, sharp pain on the left side of the neck, still dizzy all day, feel like sleeping 2 hours after normal activities in the mornings. an MRI showed disc protursion in the C-5 area mildly pressing nerves affecting left arm. But then I wake up this morning and the whole back of my neck is in pain, and I cant stretch it or touch it without pain. And it comes with verry annoying pains in both temples and ears and behind my eyes as well. And thats not the worst part, my shoulders both are in pain when I move them, or lift things. All the way down to the palms of my hands, and then when I change sleeping positions at night, my hips hurt the same way and all the way down to my feet ..
They increased the neurotin and have no luck so far. Drowsy, dizzy and in pain. I just seen a rheumatologist and he seemed like a dip and treated me like nothing was wrong with me and that I would need a second opinion anyways, because he didn't think that he could help me. He sent me to have lab work, I am talking at least six vials full. So my question is there anyone out there that has had something similar to what I have going on and if they have received any help?
