Hi Doctor,
I got an appointment with a podiatrist and asked him his opinion on nail polish. He said that the reason why nail polish is a 'no-no' is that it traps moisture under the nail and can cause fungus!!!

It looks like pitted lateral lines across the nail, but not along the length of the nail. The nail bed on the anterior edge has slightly thickened and recedes over time, too.
Over time, the putting has come and gone, and the nail seems to be really hard and brittle. The symptoms spread to my left hand, but only the first finger, a year or two later. Same appearance.
no no ,, my nails kinda look normal but thier is about 15 or so ridges they are like groves and its not a fungus , acctually I got a fungus several years ago and this thing killed it , it took a year to do it and the nail had a horizontal line as the fungus grew off,, and i've seen the pitcher in a magizine of what I have ,, and the drops were just 19.
Then went on line to a vitamin store and bought three different treatmnts for toe nail fungus. The one thing I used 2-3 times a day was nail repair tea tree oil and I bought oreagano oil caps and opened one of themand put the oil in the nail repair. It worked really well. I have been able to keep it under control. I use this 1 -2 times everyday! I apply it after every shower.
I went to the doctor and was told I had nail fungus and needed Lamisil. One tablet, once a day for 3 months. They took and ran tests of my blood to test my liver and they said all tests came back normal. They went ahead and said to begin taking the medication. I'm 21 and relatively healthy. I'm afraid to take Lamisil though. I've heard the side effects are horrible. Should I be worried?
I might be in the wrong forum as well but I was prescribed lamisil after a positive test for Onychomycosis on my toenails. I was told to take one tablet a day for 3 months. My doctor did check my liver before starting and he called to say everything was normal and to go forth with the treatment.
I've heard so many bad things from hair loss, death, loss of taste and I'm so scared.
As we age, nails thicken and become more susceptible to nail conditions and infections. Circulatory problems and use of medications also increase the risk of developing a nail condition.
Fungal infection or onychomycosis tends to run in families because of an inherited tendency, but not everyone is susceptible. While some fungal nail infections may respond to topical antifungal creams, lotions, and gels, most infections of the nail plate require oral medications prescribed by your doctor.
Fungal infection in toe nail needs long term treatment. The nail is the most difficult from where the fungus can be eradicated. You need take anti fungal tablet for at least 9-12 months. The entire nail plate takes 9-12 months to be replaced so you need to take this tablet for long time. No topical drugs only will be effective. Please talk to your physician for this.

Toe nails are more prone to fungal infections, closed footwear, nylon hosiery, socks all provide the perfect breeding ground. Wearing nail varnish on top of these conditions won't have helped but if you were wearing open toe shoes all summer then I'd say you were extremely unlucky in developing a fungal infection.
There is some anecdotal evidence that vicks vaporub works. Vinegar slows down the growth of the fungus so may help in eradicating it.

From the symptoms it looks like fungal nail infection or trauma skin. An infection of nail fungus occurs when fungi infect one or more of your nails. Nail fungus can be difficult to treat, and repeated infections are common. Over-the-counter antifungal nail creams and ointments are available, but they aren't very effective. You need to get a KOH examination and fungal culture of the nail scrapings done and then oral antifungals prescribed.
The doctor didn't mention fungus. How can you tell if it is that? I always thought a fungus would smell bad wouldn't it? The nail isn't raised, hasn't been damaged and doesn't smell. I don't know exactly when it appeared because I only noticed it when I removed my nail varnish, which wasn't chipped or damaged as I guess it would have been if it had been knocked.
I am hoping I am just paranoid now....
