Avatar f tn I will have a mechanical valve again when I have surgery for the aneurysm. Hopefully that will be my last one. Good luck and God bless.
Avatar n tn Therefore, I am seriously considering having a tssue valve instead of a mechanical valve this time. I know there is a chance of having to have a "redo" for the tissue valve so really worrying about that situation. Hopefully by the time to redo the tissue valve another option will be available for surgery.
Avatar n tn my husband is 51 years old and has had by-pass surgery, and has a mechanical valve and is having sever side effects from the coumadin. We need a safe alternative for coumadin without compromising his health. We are looking for a doctor to help support this transition. We reside in PA. and hope to find a medical doctor that will monitor this change, what is your opinion?
Avatar m tn We are confused with the selection of valve between tissue valve and mechanical valve given her child bearing age. Can you please help us with following questions? a) What is the average lifespan of tissue valve? b) What is the best tissue valve? The options I am aware of are porcine, bovine, homograft. c) What are the complications involved in redo surgery? d) What are the precautions to be taken with mechanical valve. e) She also has mild MR.
Avatar f tn The mechanical valve will not wear out. But as your princess grows, her heart grows too, but the valve does not. Therefore she will probably need a replacement after a couple of years. Once she has stopped growing, the mechanical valve will last her whole life and need not be replaced anymore. Yes, lifelong medication :-( , but fortunately that normally goes without much problems. You little girl will recover very quickly, especially with all the love and care she gets.
Avatar f tn My mother had a mitral valve replacement in 2001. For the last 4 years she has been in atrial fibrillation. Thursday August 6, 2010 she went to have the procedure to see if she has blood clots. Her blood thickness is at 3.5 and she has been on Coumadin since 2001. Thursday the doctor found a clot that is 3cm in her upper appendage. He stated that he felt it had been there since the valve replacement and probably will stay there, but of course if it moves she will have a stroke.
549052 tn?1215009191 What you will be asked to decide is whether the replacement you want is mechanical valve or biotic (pig or bovine) valve. The mechanical lasts much longer, but requires continued medication (warifarin), and there is a clicking sound heard that some find annoying. The biotic replacement does not have a funcitonal life span greater than about 10 years. But no other other downside that I am aware.
Avatar n tn I have a mechanical aortic (titanium) valve. my pain dr. wants to do radio frquency ablation on my spine Is this safe?
Avatar m tn s opinion, but having read many posts on the subject it is generally agreed that often there can be valve sparring procedures that can preserve the natvie aorta valve during an aorta graft for an aneursym. A mechanical valve has a very long span and may not need replacing. I don't know the contingent issues involved to replace or not replace a good mechanical valve...the pressure gradient appears to be normal and no problem.
Avatar f tn I have a mechanical mitral valve for 4 years.Taking Coumadin 6 mg but 3 days ago the result from the Lab was 1. and I'm scare because sometimes I have to go to the Hospital for that. The Doctor sent me 7 mg daily staring today and go to the Lab next Friday again. What should I do?
Avatar m tn The INR range for a mechanical valve is 2.5-3.5...last week mine was 3.8. So I have to return next week for another protime. Some people have no problem being regulated....I am not that fortunate. Good luck to you.....
Avatar n tn Where to take a 13 year old for a mitral valve repair for mitral valve stenosis when she already has a annuloplasty ring. The outlook for a tissue valve not a mechanical valve if replacement is the only option. Menses has already started. However Noonans syndrome is a real possiblility.
868230 tn?1239764346 Blood clotting caused by the new valve. Replacement with a mechanical valve requires lifelong treatment with medicine to prevent blood clots (anticoagulant). Infection in the new valve. Infection is more common with valve replacement than with valve repair. Failure of the new valve. Valve failure is more common with valve replacement than with valve repair. Bioprosthetic valves last for about 8 to 15 years.
Avatar f tn At age 37 I had open heart and had the valve replaced with a St. Jude mechanical valve.....that was 22 years ago. I have done well but now facing surgery again because of an ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm. The anuerysm measures 4.7 cm and surgery is usually required at 5.0-5.5 cm. I have another ct scan in November to see if the anuerysm is larger. At the time of this surgery I will have the mechanical valve replaced because of some wearing that has occurred.
1569696 tn?1295732552 I am seriously thinking about having the tissue valve instead of mechanical valve. I know there is a possibility of having to have the tissue valve replaced in the future. But there is a less invasive surgery that hopefully can be done at that time. My surgeon thinks the tissue valve will be better for me because of my history with coumadin. The valve is being replaced because of calcification.
Avatar f tn Jude mechanical valve. I am to have open heart again in January to replace the valve also to have the Wheat procedure to repair an aneurysm. I have to decide whether to have another mechanical valve or have a tissue valve. I know the St. Jude will last longer but after almost 25 years of coumadin therapy is making me think about having the tissue valve. Just wanted some input from others.
Avatar m tn My husband had a mechanical valve. put in 09-15-2010 do to damage to his aortic valve. He has not been doing good at all . he started having problems about 2 weeks after surgery. He then had a stroke in Dec. he just got out of the hospital after a week of tests. The valve is not working properly. It has to be replaced. It will be done Nov. 2 . We are not happy this has to be done , but have gone to a different hospital and feel confidant in there team of doctors. Is this normal?
Avatar m tn When intervention is required with mitral valve regurgitation, there is first the question whether the valve needs to be replaced or if it can be repaired. If it can be repaired, that is almost always the best way to go. If the valve needs to be replaced then questions arise the type of valve (mechanical or tissue) with its pros and cons (lifetime, medications) Then there is perhaps the option of open heart or via a minimally invasive procedure.
Avatar n tn I still too like going out with friends and family, planning trips for Vegas, Hawaii, etc....the cardiologist says the mechanical valve will be best suited for me. I'm not sure if I could take a blood thinner for the rest of my life. Am I going to be able to have the same kind of life I have now, do I need to quit sports, drinking etc., I'm still young and don't want to have to be so cautious for the rest of my life with the mechanical one.
Avatar f tn Thank u for the info. I had my surgery on March 15th. I am doing much better this time around. The surgeon had no other option but to put in a mechanical valve. One leaflet was completly not moving, the other two were imobile, and there was a blood clot on the origional replaced bovine valve. Thank u for your help.
Avatar m tn I was given argotroban in the hospital. Apixiban and dabigitran are nonapproved for mechanical heart valve patients.
