1569696 tn?1295732552 I pray that it is a very long time. I plan to have an aortic valve replacement in March, I am very optimistic about it and plan to live a long life. I hope to be better than ever in my physical acitivities....so tired of being short of breath when walking uphill or climbing stairs. We play the cards we're dealt and stay positive. Good luck to you.
Avatar n tn Does anyone know whether percutaneous valve replacement is used when there are problems of regurgitation?
Avatar m tn I am glad that your doctor is getting frequent echos and following you closely as I suspect he/she knows the criteria for valve replacement and is following you closely. All the best, Dr.
Avatar n tn My dad was 66 and had a tissue valve replacement in 1981 and later in 2001 he got another valve replacement with Mechanical. He was a surgeon and lived a very active life. He was also on Warfarin after his second surgery. Last December, he had sore throat for three weeks and one day he vomitted and in like 15 mintues he passed away. I am not surre if his tissue valve failed or something else.
552012 tn?1272855991 i was just diagnosed with mitral valve stenosis with severe mitral valve regurgitation and was told my only option was to have my valve replaced. Since that time i have been doing as much research on my condition as i could. Since i can no longer work and have all the time in the world to think about this. I was also told that since i am having symptoms it is very important to get the surgery done fairly quickly by a cardiologist which is rather scary.
Avatar f tn I am 34 years old and had an AVR in 2003. I have a St. Jude valve and am on 20 mg a day of Coumadin. My INR just cannot get above 1.5. If you have anything constructive to offer I would LOVE to hear from you! Please help!
Avatar f tn The normal Valve-replacement surgery (open heart - full sternotomy and on cardio-pulmonary bypass) would leave the Surgeon with a heart that is not pumping and should take from 3-6 hours to complete. Your surgery was done over 12 hours! thus it must have been a very complicated case and very rear. I am very glad to hear that you have survived all of this and life after a new valve/repaired heart sure is much better!
Avatar n tn Graet to haer from someone else about similar medical situation. Was the valve replacement horrendous ? Tell me more !!
Avatar n tn Now I have to have the valve replaced Feb. 8 due to calcium buildup and an aortic anuerysm repaired. I HATE coumadin...I had 55 protimes last year so over 25 years I have done protimes many, many times. The INR will not stay regulated and I have been on Lovenox injections numberous times. Therefore, I am seriously considering having a tssue valve instead of a mechanical valve this time.
Avatar f tn Now he is suffering with swelling of the calf, ankle and foot on the same leg as the replacement. He is exercising, walking, biking on stationery bike and doing the exercises that PT told him to do. He is able to bend 126 degrees and walks very well without any aid. He is doing stairs as well. He ices it and elevates the leg periodically throughout the day. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? It is extremely frustrating.
Avatar n tn In valve replacement surgery, the leaky aortic valve is replaced by an artificial (prosthetic) valve. The two types of artificial valves are mechanical and tissue. Mechanical valves are made from metal and are durable, but they carry the risk of blood clots forming on or near the valve. If you have a mechanical valve, you need to use blood-thinning (anticoagulant) medication for life to prevent blood clots from forming on the valve.
Avatar n tn My dad is not getting any relief after taking medicines either so doctor had suggested valve replacement. So my question is Is valve replacement surgory is safe? after surgory my dad will get relief or not? and how long will this surgory works? main question is Is this surgery is safe or any risk is there? and what is EF, my dad's ef is also very low 26% , 3 months back it was 55%..... please guide me in detail if possible...
Avatar n tn My 76 year old grandmother is undergoing valve replacement surgury and I was wondering what the suvival rates and complication statistics generally speaking are for immediately postoperative and for the following months and years? Can you refer me to a web page or do you know?
868230 tn?1239764346 I had mine replaced ten years ago and have been doing fine. Valve replacement is common these days and the outlook is excellent. Good luck.
Avatar m tn Unfortunately it sounds like this child has a very serious problem that can occur in a small number of patients with atrioventricular canal defects. Unfortunately once a mitral valve replacement is placed and causes a secondary left ventricular outflow tract obstruction, there are no good options. Complex heart surgery to enlarge the left ventricular outflow tract called a Konno operation may be indicated. This is a high risk surgery given all the childs issues.
1246614 tn?1268684275 I have a valve disorder (regurgitation) and my cardiologist looks for the symptoms you are experiencing. The risk you are facing with delay is the possiblility the heart will enlarge and heart pumping functionality will be impaired. It is very difficult and may not be possible to return the heart to normal. A valve surgeon at the Mayo Clinic states the biggest problem he faces it the patient that has waited too long. Has your left ventricle enlarged? Is your EF 55% or above?
Avatar n tn if my brother didi not get the valve replacement tricuspid and repair mitral valve and right artery bypass, he is 60 years old, do you think he would be still alive today?
Avatar n tn The valve gradient is a measure of the difference in blood pressure across the two sides of the valve. If the EFO is small, and the valve gradient is high, the valve is not functioning very well. Unless your husband is elderly and can expect another tissue valve to outlast him, he might want to consider getting a mechanical valve this time. I had my aortic valve replaced with a tissue valve the first time and a mech valve the second time. Coumadin is not that big a deal, really.
Avatar f tn If you father decides on a valve replacement, there is the bovine tissue valve. It has a life span of about 10-15 years and usually recommended for older patients. The other choice is a mechanical valve that requires warifin (prevent clots), and warifin taking patients require frequent visits to help maintain the appropriate level of medication. Also, there is a ticking noise that some people find annoying.
Avatar f tn Today I take 20mg of coumidin and lovenox shots and am still not therapudic. protime is 1.73 I go to a hemotologist on the 22nd of June. I also just had a echocardiogram done as a follow-up. They found I have only 2 valves on my tricuspid and a hole i my heart. Also my ejection fraction rate is about 50% What should I be doing. Should I persue going to the Cleveland Clinic?
Avatar m tn One of them suggested to go with open heart Mechanical valve replacement surgery as the doctor has been doing it for many years and the valve has 20-30 years lifetime. Another specialist suggested to go with Non-invasive Bio valve replacement as my sister has also got nerurofibroma and blood thinning required for mechanical valve replacement may have side effects on her neurofibroma. But the life for bio valve seems to be around 10-15 years.
Avatar f tn It could stay moderate for decades and never become a real problem. The risk is when is becomes chronic or severe regurgitation. If your husband isn't more short of breath than expected, feeling over tired and lethargic all the time, has no leg swelling then I would assume the Doctors will just keep him on medication to keep his heart healthy. What they don't want is the left ventricle having to compensate by enlarging, but that is usually the next stage from moderate.
Avatar f tn have a ques guys... i had a Aortic Valve replacement in 1990 and it needs to be done again so have a qes on the kind of Aortic Valve we have now ..... i know there are two metalic and tissue and tissue is a better option but doc says that the one have tissues valve have to go through replacement after 10 to 15 yrs ..... n the one with metalic have to take med till end but no replacement .....
Avatar n tn I had my first open heart surgery in Oct 85 and that was a mitrial valve replacement. My second was July 1996 and that was my aortic valve!
Avatar f tn Hi, While doing an aortic valve replacement, there are critical electrical fibers which run quite close to the aortic valve and these fibres may be damaged while doing the replacement. Hence, after an aortic valve replacement a defibrillator is put to ensure that in case some abnormal rhythms originate, they are suppressed by the defibrillator. Usually, these abnormal rhythms are transient and don’t last for a long time but still can be life threatening and hence the defibrillator.
