Common Questions and Answers about Lipitor and the liver

lipitor

Avatar n tn I drink socially and take liptor and was wondering in that I only drink in the evenings if it's better to take the lipitor in the morning in order for the liver to metabolize the alcohol at night. Or is the liver simply distributed evenly over a 24 hour period making the time you take it with alcohol irrelevant. Does drinking 1.5 - 2.0 oz of scotch or bourbon within an hour or two of taking 20 mg of Lipitor create an elevated risk of Liver or Kidney dysfunction?
Avatar m tn My father is 51 years old now and in August 2008 had a heart attack, the doctor advised him to use lipitor, lowplat.mepresor and loprine, his ALT and AST count in november 2008 was 30 and 22 respectively, by the use of lipitor his ALT ans AST count raised to 2246 and 1280 ... clearly above normal... doctor advised him t leave the use of lipitor. my question t you is ... by leaving lipitor will the count decrease?? or what should be done??
Avatar m tn I am confussed by RJGCEDARS post because i did not think that you could take Lipitor if you have liver problems, also the better your liver gets the better it metabolises cholesterol.
Avatar n tn I was on lipitor was many years but no doctor ever checked my blood. Last year I went off of this med because when I was hospitalized for something else they discovered that my liver enzymes were high. I'm still off lipitor and my enzymes flutuate from high normal to high. I'm wondering if the lipitor did damage to my liver. Also, I have some neurological issues which includes my muscles. Am wondering if the lipitor caused this. My total cholesteral is 226 and my LDL is 79.
2121656 tn?1395674749 Thank you for the quick response. I greatly appreciate it. I'm ecstatic to beable to go into our new pool, also for exercise seeing that I pulled a muscle in my groin walking the treadmill. My fear of waiting till Oct. to see a gastro is that severe damage will happen to my liver in the meantime, until I get treatment. I picked up my ultrasound report and if you could please explain what all this means? Abdominal Ultrasound-Limited: Comparsion is made to the previous study of 8/28/08 1.
Avatar n tn Recent studies have found that statins like Lipitor acutally improve liver function in patients with liver disease and the incidence rate of liver failure is not turning out to be as high as originally thought. In fact, the FDA is considering dropping the liver failure side effect from the patient leaflet and consumer information.
Avatar n tn What is the problem: Lipitor. Lipitor and other statins have a long list of adverse health problems including liver damage, kidney failure, heart failure, cataracts and diabetes.
Avatar n tn Even without the Lipitor, they went up some to 74 AST and 142 ALT. Now he wants me to go to get a GI Specialist. I asked if this was for more testing, he just said no, but they would be better off determining what medication you should be on. I drink daily about two beers and then 3 drinks total of 10 to 12 oz of liquor. I have measured it so this is very accurate. How high are these readings? I am also on a very restrictive low-carbohydrate diet. Could this be causing the problem?
Avatar f tn Hi Dr. Hopefully you can answer some questions for me... I have been on statins from the age of 39 from one Med to another because my numbers would not come all the way down to normal I got a new Dr last year and he changed all my meds, started with lipitor 40mg vit d 50.000 units a weeks allopurinol.
2121656 tn?1395674749 Dr. Schiano, Hi there! I'm thankful for this site to get a insight into understanding medical diagnoses. Before I get started, I would like to thank you for all you do and taking the time in reviewing my post. Well, I'll start with telling you a little about my health. I've type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high trig. (hereditary on mother's side). I was just diagnosed with Hashimoto Thyroiditis. Due to the diabetes and high cholesterol I was taking metformin 500 mg.
10996785 tn?1432812977 s from detox, pneumonia, and a stroke. with the stroke, which is considered small and deep in my cerebellum, my vision and balance was effected. My balance was already damage from the benzo's and alcohol abuse. Lately some of you might have read my last thread that I haven't been feeling well. Actually I haven't felt well for a very long time. I did see my PCP yesterday and we all agreed that the trazodone was the one med that was making me very sluggish.
Avatar f tn Hi ! Been wanting to catch up with you. The first rheumy said I have RA and the new one I went to says I don't. My nuclear whole body scan shows most EVERY joint in my body to be degenerative. (does that mean erosion)? I do have that positive RA Factor and have pain. But now I don't know if I may have Lupus. My Lupus labs are negative including the DNA. Can they eventually become positive?
570906 tn?1219279568 I do suspect the nagerin and the Lipator, and just wanted to share this experience. I would not doubt that I put myself in danger and hat I might have even done some damage to my liver...
10996785 tn?1432812977 Statins have many negative effects that most people and doctors don't know about and don't take seriously. Because cholesterol is necessary to health and to production of hormones and absorption and movement of fat soluble nutrients cutting it with a drug will have some beneficial consequences if cutting cholesterol is necessary (which it is much less often than the drug is given to people) but also negative consequences. Statins are also highly liver toxic.
Avatar f tn AST on upper end of normal at 40. The doctor said to stop the Lipitor...but stay on the Zetia...... and retest in 1-1/2 weeks which he did this past Sept. 30th. His ALP came down to normal at 91, his ALT stayed the same at 79, his AST stayed relatively the same at 42, but his GGTP went quite high at 240. The doctor's office called and told him to come in next week.
Avatar n tn was on lipitor for 5 months and switched two weeks ago to simvastatin in hopes of less side effects. just got some blood work done and the liver enzymes are elevated about one and a half times normal. does anyone know if its normal to see a spike in liver enzymes after switching statins or does this mean my body is rejecting the new statin?
Avatar f tn He went to the nurses station and told them. The RN said that this is usually the beginning of the end. They started him on morphine because they didnt want him to cough anymore. He passed away 14 hours later. He had severe ascites and whole body jaundice. It was so pityful. I have read that with the ascites comes portal hypertension and that the coffee grounds is actually dried blood. Could he have been bleeding internally?
Avatar n tn I assume you are taking 20mg in the morning and 20mg in the evening? This is really pointless. Lipitor is well known to work while you are sleeping, because the Liver makes most cholesterol at this time. Other statin brands can be taken at any time, probably because they sit in the blood for longer or something, but Lipitor strictly instruct you to take in the evening.
Avatar n tn t get too concerned until these get over 300. Also, statins have been show to be harmless to the liver. In fact, the FDA no longer recommends that doctors do additional blood tests to check for effects of a statin on the liver. Ask you doctor when they would like to retest.
Avatar m tn Just wondering, because I know that Lipitor works with the liver and can cause issues when combined with alcohol. You should probably get a blood workup though.
Avatar m tn My test show normal range for male as AST 5-45 ul & ALT 7-56 u/l
Avatar m tn I am taking Lipitor 20MG for the last 6 years. Recently, my doctor advice me to stop taking Lipitor for 2 months and after that he will see my Cholestorel level result and will advice further medication. I am little scared if I stop taking Lipitor, does it will occur any heart attack or blockage in arteriy or any other risk for me.
Avatar m tn Muscle aches and pains or even burning and tingling can be due to Lipitor. This drug can cause kidney and liver dysfunction and this may cause the feeling of internal shakiness. I suggest you get a kidney and liver function test and talk to your doctor regarding all this being due to Lipitor. It is difficult to bring down a BP of 155/110 by diet and exercise only. However if there is an underlying cause such as kidney or liver problem, then treating the cause may help.
Avatar n tn i take fish oil , flaxseed and medamusal.
