Common Questions and Answers about Lipitor side effects liver enzymes

lipitor

Avatar n tn i have just changed from Crestor to Lipitor and back again. No side effects. Why are you taking statins? You have a heart problem? What are ast and alt? I've been on stats for four years wnd never heard of them.
Avatar n tn was on lipitor for 5 months and switched two weeks ago to simvastatin in hopes of less side effects. just got some blood work done and the liver enzymes are elevated about one and a half times normal. does anyone know if its normal to see a spike in liver enzymes after switching statins or does this mean my body is rejecting the new statin?
1583640 tn?1296674030 m saying that in the case of statins, the effects have been proven to NOT be accumulative. Side effects almost always present in the first 90 days. I'm sure there are some situations where that is not the case.
2121656 tn?1395674749 I forgot to ask two more questions in my above post. Is swimming in a chlorine pool ok with high liver enzymes as stated above, or will the chlorine elevate them more? my husband & I just purchased a pool and PCP said it's ok to swim in Chlorine. However, I'm skeptical in doing so.
2121656 tn?1395674749 Dr. Schiano, Hi there! I'm thankful for this site to get a insight into understanding medical diagnoses. Before I get started, I would like to thank you for all you do and taking the time in reviewing my post. Well, I'll start with telling you a little about my health. I've type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high trig. (hereditary on mother's side). I was just diagnosed with Hashimoto Thyroiditis. Due to the diabetes and high cholesterol I was taking metformin 500 mg.
Avatar m tn Did the Dr do any other blood work like Hepatitis A or B. Lipitor has been known to raise Liver enzymes. It is a side effect for some people. It cannot cause Hepatitis C. You Dr needs to do more evaluating.
Avatar n tn I was on lipitor was many years but no doctor ever checked my blood. Last year I went off of this med because when I was hospitalized for something else they discovered that my liver enzymes were high. I'm still off lipitor and my enzymes flutuate from high normal to high. I'm wondering if the lipitor did damage to my liver. Also, I have some neurological issues which includes my muscles. Am wondering if the lipitor caused this. My total cholesteral is 226 and my LDL is 79.
Avatar n tn Sometimes Lipitor can cause mild elevations in liver enzymes, such as AST and ALT. Usually, this is just monitored. If the enzymes increase to 3 times the upper limit of normal, then the medication is usually stopped. Having an AST of 45 is not too worrisome, but just make sure your doctor rechecks it in about 3 months.
Avatar n tn I am 25 male and been on lipitor 20mg for almost 2 months. No side effects.
Avatar f tn I have always been monitored every 3_4 months with blood work and he put me on this lipitor 7/11 and I complained about the ide effects and he still increased it in 10/11 because he didn't see liver damage to 80mg from 40mg along with the 200mg of fenofibrate.
255738 tn?1230233362 told me to discontinue taking products containing Tylenol. This is the first time ever I have shown elevated liver enzymes. Is there any further cause for concern? Any input would be helpful as I find this very disturbing. Thanks.
10996785 tn?1432812977 No one told me about lipitor side effects. I literally felt like my body was freezing up. When I Googled it, they referenced ALS like symptoms. This really blew my mind. (spill the wine). They say it may take a month or longer to feel a little bit better. The blood work being ok is a big thing all of a sudden. I have a low grade side effect. I'm weaning off trazodone now, next neurontin, then nortripyline. Maybe. Better days ahead. Maybe...
Avatar f tn s to go even higher, even the ALP which was always normal (and came back to normal after stopping the Lipitor). Would you tend to agree? Is 1-1/2 weeks long enough for his other enzymes to come down after stopping the Lipitor? Do you feel he should stop the Zetia as well? What could be possible reasons why the GGTP went up so high? And lastly, do you feel he should have an ultrasound or CT scan at this point? I thank you for your time.
Avatar f tn The elevated liver enzymes do not go with MS. MS effects your brain, central nervous system and optic nerves. Ms can cause dizziness but many other things cause dizziness, as well. Are you seeing a GP? What do they think?
Avatar m tn t know if you have HCV or not, but I did read that you have been taking Lipitor for several years. When my dad was on it, he had to have his liver enzymes monitored, so maybe the cause is the Lipitor? Best to ask your dr. about it though........
Avatar n tn In my non-expert opinion, 10-12 oz of liquor per day (plus 2 beers) would be enough to raise your enzymes. Adding Lipitor to the mix would possibly aggravate it. I'll bet that if you stayed off the alcohol for 30 days, you would see an improvement. I drank too much for too long, but never had raised enzymes on a bloodwork because I always stopped drinking 2-3 weeks before a scheduled blood test.
576875 tn?1217987525 I am beginning to get really aggravated at the attitude of my doctor. I do not smoke or drink but my liver enzymes and sugar came out high on a recent job physical. A subsequent test showed both normal. This is really starting to bug me because I am in constant pain 24/7 and do not want to take aspirin or advil and such just to get some relief. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Avatar n tn Studies have found no links to incremental side effects with long term use. Your dosage is quite small, most all side effects occur with doses of 80 mg per day. Just make sure to get your blood tested annually to make sure there are no changes in your liver enzymes.
570906 tn?1219279568 That said, liver enzymes should be regularly monitored when on statins, especially in the beginng. Did your liver enzymes spike after taking Lipitor? If not, your liver pains might be caused by something else. Dont know what "Nargerin" is.
Avatar n tn The Fenofibrate can cause bloating indigestion, stomach pain, and increased liver enzymes or liver problems in addition to other side effects. The Zetia can cause some of these too. Have they tested your liver enzymes yet? If so were they normal? There are other drugs for lowering cholesterol and triglycerides that work as well. You can ask him to have you try Lipitor (generic) and there is now a generic Niaspan. I know because my husband is on it.
Avatar n tn Actually, Lipitor is much stronger than Simvastatin and has a much higher incidence of side effects, unless I have missed some new data. According to the links I have Simvastatin is the safest statin on the market.
Avatar m tn Our vet had been reluctant to put dog on pb as he has had elevated liver enzymes for a couple years now and is taking denamarin. He did prescribe pb though and will monitor liver enzymes. Moe was initially put on 15mg twice a day. After 1 week on this dosage, we called the vet as side effects were really awful. He suggested that we half the dose which we did do. He seems a bit better, but is still very disoriented and is urinating in the house.
Avatar n tn Statin drugs are often associated with side effects including nausea, headaches, dizziness, sleep disturbances, sexual dysfunction, fatigue, shortness of breath, memory loss, liver problems, muscle weakness, muscle pain, peripheral neuropathy and cardiomyopathy due to a depletion of Coenzyme Q10. Thirteen liver failure cases and nine deaths were linked with Lipitor. In response, the FDA has recommended the addition of warnings to statin package inserts about the possibility of liver failure.
