Avatar n tn I have been taking levothyroxine for 4 months now. Will I see any boost in my metabolism soon? I have been trying to lose weight, and can only seem to take of pounds (5 in 9 months) by doing excessive cardio (2 hours per day). I am eating between 1500-2000 calories per day and sleeping a lot, like 9 hours every night. Is there any hope or piece of mind for me?

Avatar n tn Eight years later I now weigh 220lbs. I have been on several different strengths of levothyroxine. I believe that it is o.k. just for today. Would I benefit from the old formula which contains both the T-3 and T-4 hormone? I am at my wits end. I have tried everything. I never stopped exercising and eating healthy;however, there is no indication in my weight and BMI (47%) that what I am doing is helping me. Would you recommend the naturoid for me?
Avatar f tn My doctors suggest that I take Phentermine but im taking levothyroxine 88mg and Cytomel 5mg due to thyroidectomy 3 years ago and I have gain weight due to hypothyroidism. Have anyone tried the phentermine while on levothyroxine and Cytomel?
Avatar f tn What are your actual thyroid hormone levels? It sounds as though your dosage of levothyroxine might not be adequate or possibly you aren't converting the T4 (Levothyroxine) to the usable T3 hormone. If you'll post your actual lab results, we'll be able to better help you. Be sure to include reference ranges with any results you post, since ranges vary from lab to lab and have to come from your own report(s).
Avatar m tn My dog has had hypothyroidism for several years and has been on 0.2 mg of Levothyroxine twice daily ever since. Recently, when they did a check on his T4 they found that it was low and they increased it immediately to 0.4 mg. A week or two later he began to significantly pant and wheeze. Then he decided to give him 150 mg of Theophylline twice daily. Could the thyroid dose change have caused these symptoms or is it a coincidence?
Avatar f tn I was on .001 levothyroxine for 4 weeks when I was diagnosed with hypothyroid. My TSH level went from 6 to .009 so my doctor lowered my dose to .088... since I ended up hyper... I was thrilled to have lost 5 of the 30 pounds I had gained before being diagnosed...now being on this lower level.... I have regained the 5# I had lost... Is this normal? Can such a small change in medication cause such drastic changes in my metabolism?
662972 tn?1270166301 s energy and metabolism. Levothyroxine is given when the thyroid does not produce enough of this hormone on its own. Levothyroxine treats hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone). Levothyroxine is also used to treat or prevent goiter (enlarged thyroid gland), which can be caused by hormone imbalances, radiation treatment, surgery, or cancer. Levothyroxine should not be used to treat obesity or weight problems. Levothyroxine may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Avatar f tn Hello! I was diagnosed with hypo/hashimotos in 2008. I am currently taking 88 mg of levothyroxine. Recently, I have been feeling terrible... extremely tired, haven't had a normal bm in months, night sweats almost every night, lots of brain fog, gaining weight, etc. As a result, I had my labs drawn. Here are my results: TSH .927 (.35-5.0) T4-Free 1.0 (.6-1.6) T3 (Total) 104 (87-180) T3-Free 3.4 (2.1-3.
1737579 tn?1310666986 I just started taking Levothroxine a week ago, and not feeling any different any energy level, brain fog, metabolism, and am very agitated. My doctor's nurse said the medicine would not take effect until 6 weeks when I go back to get my blood drawn again. I am a teacher and can't wait that now till it becomes effective. I am contemplating taking only Iodoral alone, without the prescription.
Avatar n tn FT3 is the most important test to know because FT3 largely regulates metabolism and many other body functions. FT3 has also been shown to correlate best with hypo symptoms. A good thyroid doctor will treat a patient clinically, by testing and adjusting FT3 and FT4 as necessary to relieve symptoms, without being constrained by resultant TSH levels. symptom relief should be all important, not test results.
Avatar f tn Hi,I've been taking Levothyroxine Na (Euthyrox ) for many years, i'm afraid that the decreasing hemoglobin and gaining weight DESPITE of my diet control are the side-effects of prolong intake of this medicines. Do i need to refer it with my Endocrinologist? so that she will change my medicines? , because according to her its a life-time intake of medicines...please advise!!
Avatar m tn Is it true that low doses of Levothyroxine (like 25 or 50 mcg) won't rise metabolism or temperature much, yet they reduce TSH thus natural thyroid production so that most people end up with the same or lower levels of thyroid hormones especially the more active T3? Is it true that Levothyroxine-only treatments require such high doses (at least 100 mcg) that suppress TSH in order to be effective?
Avatar f tn TSH - normal range is 0.34-4.94 And my level is 0.66. I take levothyroxine 0.88. My clinic doesn't test for T3 or T4, only TSH. Is that something I should get tested? Weight is the biggest symptom I have, but I tired a lot too.
Avatar f tn I take 50 mcg of levothyroxine every morning for my thyroid and it seems that my belly has increased ten fold. I have always been a small person since I was a child and Never had a problem such as this. I have gained 20 lbs. and my belly looks like I am 8 months preg. Can this drug cause this? The weight gain started when I started this drug.....
Avatar m tn I agree with Barb. Thyroid plays a HUGE role in regulating metabolism. With low Thyroid your metabolism is slow. Thus your furnace doesn't burn calories. This is what makes people lethargic, tired and gain weight. Your body has no energy and instead stores it as fat. How long and what dosage of Levo where you on? Please post any blood labs you have.
Avatar n tn Phenytoin may alter the metabolism of thyroid hormones, reducing its effect; there is limited documentation of this interaction, but monitoring should be considered. AR-10 I am on 100mcg Levothyroxine sodium. Thanks for the input...Talk with my doctor on Tuesday!
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with Hashimotos Thyroiditis after my doctor discovered nodules on my throid. I since had a sonogram and FNA Biopsy (benign). She started me on levothyroxine and all of a sudden I START having symptoms of thyroiditis where I did not before she started me on the medicine. I developed hives, swelling eyes, depression, extreme fatigue, 20lbs in weight gain, hair loss. The hives got worse today when the Endo changed me to a brand name levothyroxine.
Avatar f tn free t4 should not cross 75% of reference range. various symptoms can come like palpitations, insomnia, diarrhea etc. also symptoms may not appear but still remaining in high range is risky due to a strong relation of increased t4 with increase chance of reducing bone mineral density and other complications.
Avatar f tn Free T3 is the most important because it largely regulates metabolism and many other body functions. Scientific studies have also shown that Free T3 correlated best with hypo symptoms, while Free T4 and TSH did not correlate at all. Since hypo patients often are deficient in other areas as well, I suggest that it would be a good idea to test for Vitamin A, D, B12, and ferritin. Also, please note that just being in the low end of the ranges is frequently inadequate.
Avatar f tn I have been on Levothyroxine for over a year. My latest results show that I am subclinically hypothyroid and I had my last thyroid function test done this week along with ferritin. I am on 75mcg Levothyroxine as well as ferrous sulphate. Last few results: July - TSH: 3.5 (0.2-4.2) - 50mcg Levothyroxine September - TSH: 0.08 (0.2-4.2), FT3: 6.5 (3.9-6.7), FT4: 21.4 (12-22), TPOab: 188 (<34), TGab: 109.
988694 tn?1332359479 And several drugs increase the metabolism of levothyroxine and patients starting these medications may require a higher dose: dilantin, carbamezine (Tegretol), phenobarbitol, and rifampin. ______________________________ You might also find interesting the response I got from a good thyroid doctor when inquiring about a somewhat similar situation with another Forum member.
Avatar n tn levothyroxine, Synthroid Alternate Spellings: L-troxin, Eltroxine
1756969 tn?1332437163 It should increase your metabolism and your appetite may go up, but likely you will lose a little weight none the less. Holistically levothyroxine even through it's made in a lab, it's exactly the same chemical as T4 which is produced by the thyroid. So you meds are just making up for what your thyroid isn't producing. Note, thyroids also produce T3. Normally your body converts T4 to T3, which is then used by the cells in your body. So in theory you only need T4.
Avatar f tn I am hoping for my metabolism to speed up a bit more, should be levothyroxine be working properly. I already work out a lot and eat a low calorie diet. It wouldn't be very healthy to exercise even more or to cut calories even less than I already am :( And I will be getting a blood test in less than 3 months now...my doc wants to monitor my thyroid levels.
Avatar m tn My TSH is at 1.05; FT3 is 4.1 and FT4 is 1.11. I am currently taking 25mg of Levothyroxine twice a week. Should I continue? I am still losing a lot of hair. I am concerned that my FT3 is although within the range, it is right there at the very top of the range. Please advise.
