It has only 4 ingredients (levothyroxine, water, glycerin, gelatin), so is virtually, hypo-allergenic. I was on it for 5 years and the only drawback is the price and the fact that it's not covered by most insurance. Check that with your pharmacy and insurance company.
548668 tn?1394187222 The 25 µg dose is the smallest dose for most levothyroxine products. Tirosint is a gel based Levothyroxine product that comes in a 13 µg tablet, this may be a reasonable alternative. I do agree with you that given symptoms and TSH levels replacement with levothyroxine is reasonable.
Avatar m tn Would make sure you discuss all other meds, supplements, and timing of medication w/ your doctor. Consider Tirosint - a gel-cap of levothyroxine that is better absorbed in some patients. Also consider an evaluation into absorption issues. Celiac diseaes (gluten sensitivity) is a relatively common cause of absorption issues.
Avatar f tn I have recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism and was put on levothyroxine (about the middle of September). I went from taking 25mcg to 50mcg about three weeks ago. For the past two weeks I have had a terrible itchy and flaky scalp and have been using a dandruff shampoo but it doesn't seem to be working. Could this be a side effect from the medicine?
Avatar f tn Tirosint contains only 4 ingredients - levothyroxine, gelatin, glycerin, and water. There is no know reaction to the levothyroxine itself. If anyone did have an actual allergy to the fillers they can have a compounding pharmacy make up medication with just the levothyroxine in it. That said, you can really suffer when starting medication. I found this out the hard way when I first started thyroxine.
Avatar n tn It is always a possibility because most T4 meds contain dyes and fillers. Patients react to some brands but not others. Some brands also contain lactose, to which some patients are intolerant. To avoid this type of problem, some of our members have switched to Tirosint, which is a fairly new T4 med. Here is what the manufacturer says about it, "Tirosint is the first and only T4 in liquid gel cap form. This pure formulation consists only of T4, glycerin, gelatin, and water.
Avatar m tn I have been on Levothyroxine since 2005, had my thyroid removed due to cancer. I no longer have health insurance. I haven't felt "normal" since then. I was taking 200 mcg a day and my TSH was as low as .012 and the doctors felt this was fine. I have cut the dose to 1/2 pill a day and started to feel better, I was hyper for so long the change was huge. I decided to try not taking any levo and went way hypo, TSH went to 177.
Avatar f tn Ok I have been on levothyroxine for about 2 months now. I went off for six weeks and then back on now for two months per my doc. I started on 50 mcg, decreased to 25 mcg because it was to much. Every time I took it i felt like someone was putting a rock around my neck and I couldn't pick my head up. I just increased to 50 again and here comes the depression again. I am on 15 mcg of cytomel also. Here is my question, do indeed to increase cytomel with levo increase?
Avatar f tn You might ask your doctor about Tirosint. It's the newest levothyroxine on the market. It's a gel cap, that contains only water, glycerin and the levo; therefore, it's hypoallergenic and is usually absorbed better than pill forms. Itching, burning hands could have other causes, as well. What are your current thyroid levels, with reference ranges?
Avatar f tn I am almost 3 weeks post op. I was feeling fantastic until I was placed on Levothyroxine 125mcg. I began to have terrible itching and hives and swelling. So I stopped the medicine. I am wondering what are the side effects of not having a thyroid and not taking the medicine? If anyone has an answer please I am interested in what to do next.
Avatar f tn Hoping someone can give ideas on how I might proceed. Been treated with levothyroxine for hashimoto's over 15 years and levels prior to surgery were fine even if I was freezing, swollen face and steady weight gain. I asked pcp and endo to try me on natural thyroids and off synthetic and neither of them would because on 112mcg of synthroid my tsh level was 1, like perfect score. Pcp said at the time that the dosage varied too much and wouldn't try other options.
Avatar f tn I have been taking levothyroxine for well over two months and am still having hypo symptoms, such as hair loss, brain fog, slight weight gain, reduced energy levels, heavy & prolonged periods, despite now normal TSH levels & improved iron levels. My Free T3 level remains low - those numbers haven't even budged!
Avatar f tn He switched me from generic levothyroxine to Synthroid and added Cytomel. This helped a lot at first. The Cytomel is wonderful, but it wears off quickly. Lately I've been having horrible hypo symptoms again. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in Oct. 2010. Here are my labs: 10-11-10 TSH: 6.88 FT4 1.3 ((0.8-1.8) FT3 2.7 (2.3-4.2) Began treatment w/ 50 mcg levothyroxine A little better, but still quite symptomatic 12-15-10 TSH 0.93 FT4 1.4 (0.8-1.8) FT3 2.9 (2.3-4.
Avatar f tn Hi there I currently suffer from hypothyroidism and currently take levothyroxine. (75mcg) I recently posted a question regarding a swollen ankle and although it has since gone down I have started to get more pronounced swelling (from what I can see) around my cheekbone/under eye area. I've included a photo of it.
Avatar f tn I have been taking levothyroxine 137 mcg once a day for a couple of years. Can I stop taking it all at once or do I gradually have to get off of it?
Avatar f tn I posted on 6/17/2015 regarding my concerns over having had one episode of AFib and being concerned with the levothyroxine causing another episode. The only TSH info I had at that time was that my level was 5.6. This was taken on 5/7/2015. I just received my lab results in the mail for blood work done on 6/11/2015. She ordered at Free T3 and T4 screening on this one. In my last post you requested the results. There was no ferritin tested and my vitamin D is ok.
Avatar n tn Does anyone take Levothyroxine and if so, what do you think of it? I have heard different things. The doctor just got me started on meds and this is what he wrote. just checking on others thoughts.
Avatar m tn He was started on a 50mg dose of levothyroxine . The difference of his over all health was amazing he began to feel hungry again his breathing improved. And he was becoming more active. After about 4_6 weeks he had another repeated blood test done to check his levels and surprisingly the doctor said that his thyroid still was not functioning properly and his dose of levothyroxine was increased to 100mg. This dose made him extremely sick. Bloated . Full of trapped air. Tired and constipated.
Avatar m tn The doctor put me on Levothyroxine, and now after 3 and a half months, I have indigestion approximately 3 times a week, bloated stomach, and balance problems. Why should I take this medication when before I started taking it, I had no symtoms? Can I stop taking this medication? I'm thinking that perhaps I was born with this thyroid problem, and it was not a problem until I started taking the medication.
Avatar m tn ive missed my medication. levothyroxine for 10 days. what side affects should i experience? i feel lethargic and have been vomitting ? is this to be expected?
Avatar f tn Hello, I was diagnosed with thyroiditis and after going from hyperthyroidism to hypothyroidism I was put on 75mg of levothyroxine than my doctor said to only take half a dosage and now I've been off the medication for 6 days I was supposed to be done with treatment but ever since I stopped the medication I've been feeling dizzy again and exhausted my hair is falling out again my hands are shaking I have cold feet and nausea I told my doctor but he says I'm fine I was wondering could
Avatar n tn without know you history I will say that you need to be on the levo for the rest of your life Your dose needs tweaking from time to time You realy should be have blood testsdat least every 3 months.I would suspect your illness is not from the levo but your dose needs to be tweaked and get you on the right dosage. In my case I have lost 22 pounds and I was on too high a dosage so I had blood labs and sure enough I needed to lower my dose of the levo.
Avatar n tn I have been taking levothyroxine for 4 months now. Will I see any boost in my metabolism soon? I have been trying to lose weight, and can only seem to take of pounds (5 in 9 months) by doing excessive cardio (2 hours per day). I am eating between 1500-2000 calories per day and sleeping a lot, like 9 hours every night. Is there any hope or piece of mind for me?
Avatar f tn my doctor told me that i have hyperthyroidism and put me on .05mg of levothyroxine to start with. i have read about alot of side affects and am worried about the hair loss and weight gain the most. anyone on this medication and can give me some feedback that would be great. i am already overweight, at 170 now i have gained almost 40 lbs in 4 years. my left eye is also larger than my right, she said it will get better with time.
Avatar m tn My dog has had hypothyroidism for several years and has been on 0.2 mg of Levothyroxine twice daily ever since. Recently, when they did a check on his T4 they found that it was low and they increased it immediately to 0.4 mg. A week or two later he began to significantly pant and wheeze. Then he decided to give him 150 mg of Theophylline twice daily. Could the thyroid dose change have caused these symptoms or is it a coincidence?
