Levothyroxine coffee

Common Questions and Answers about Levothyroxine coffee

synthroid

Avatar n tn I am currently taking levothyroxine, and was wondering if its ok to have my morning coffee with real cream? The first thing I do in the mornings is take my levothyroxine, and then have my coffee.. I always wait 30 minutes or so before having my breakfast.. I have received many different answers to my questions.. Can someone help me?
Avatar m tn *Wait an hour after taking your levothyroxine before drinking coffee, including decaffeinated coffee. Coffee has the ability to impair absorption of levothyroxine. *Wait at least three to four hours before taking calcium supplements, calcium-fortified orange juice, or iron supplements, given their ability to impair absorption of levothyroxine. *Consider taking levothyroxine at bedtime. Research has shown that levothyroxine absorption may be improved by taking the medication in the evening.
Avatar f tn 30 am upon waking up and then having a weak cup of coffee within 20 minutes. This morning I set my alarm to take it so that I could still have my coffee when I actually woke up. Is it of your opinion that coffee could inhibit absorption of T4? Is there any hope that I finally start to see some weight come off? I have that lovely bloated and poochy tummy.
Avatar m tn m a coffee person - I like to take black coffee (without milk/cream etc). So if I take a cup of black coffee after 1 hour, will it affect my medi absorption? if it does, what about just tea without milk/cream? there are several online articles talking about pros and cons but i'd like to know about real life experience.
Avatar f tn Since I get up in the middle of the night anyway, I take my Levothyroxine then with a cup of water. That way when I wake up I can have my coffee right away.
8256587 tn?1399897506 I am currently dairy and gluten free and my fatigue and constipation have cleared up since on the diet, however I retook my Levothyroxine and within 2 hours I was constipated. The only change I had made was retaking the Levothyroxine but I did increase my fluid intake, too. The reaction I had from the medication is making me doubt the benefits of it. Or could I be undermedicated at 125mcg? The nurse taking my blood last time said 125mcg is a lot for a little person like me to be taking!
325224 tn?1342795914 The shakes are probably because of the caffeine in the coffee. Drink plenty of water to dilute the coffee. It will take several weeks to bring your TSH to a normal range. I would suggest getting on the brand name of synthroid or levoxyl instead of the generic form, levothyroxine. The generic forms are not always consistent from batch to batch and can upset the TSH level. It costs a little more, but at least you know that you are getting a consistent dose.
Avatar m tn background - excess sweating, hitting energy wall, lack of thirst initial blood work - August 5, 2012 TSH 11.933 0.400 - 4.200 mcU/mL FT4 0.6 0.6 - 1.5 ng/dL endo started on 75 levothyroxine October 30, 2013 blood work TSH 17.000 0.400 - 4.200 FT4 0.6 0.6 - 1.5 so free T4 hasn't changed but TSH has risen even higher.
Avatar m tn I have been taking Levothyroxine for 3 years. At that point I started having diarrhea. My doctor said that diarrhea was not a side effect of this medicine, and that I must be gluten intolerant or lactose intolerant. So for years I've been changing my diet, with no steady results. Whatever I ate, or did not eat, I still had diarrhea. So as a last resort, I stopped taking levothyroxine three days ago. I feel great !! I have so much energy and guess what? NO diarrhea !!!
Avatar f tn Hi. I am getting reading to start taking Levothyroxine to try and shink a nodule. I am only taking 1/2 of a 25mcg tablet a day. I'm a worrywart about side effects ... does it make you tired, jittery, gastro upset, etc, or has it been positive? Also, I know you're supposed to take it on an empty stomach (1/2 hr before eating) but does that include coffee???? Uhg ... I need my cup of joe 1st thing!!!!
Avatar f tn I have been on Levothyroxine for the past 5 years or so, and recently my new doctor increased my dosage from 88mcg to 100mcg, due to my blood work results. I also take Citalopram 30mg for anxiety, and Xanax as needed (rarely). I have been taking the new dosage (100mcg) for about 3- 4 weeks now. I am experiencing a huge flux in anxiety (it was always pretty stable before since I have been on the Citalopram; I haven't had to take Xaxax in over 6 months).
Avatar n tn ) One of the experts may have a different idea, but I think there is a post in here somewhere about that very conversation. You might do a search and see if you come up with anything. I thought the biggest issue is calcium and now I have heard fiber may bind with the synthroid and make it either ineffective or less effective.
Avatar f tn Hi, thanks for sharing this! I take mine in the AM on empty stomach and wait 1/2 hr to eat. Let me share this link, too, in the health pages which is of interest: Study: Altered Intestinal Absorption of L-Thyroxine Caused by Coffee Objective: To report eight case histories, and in vivo and in vitro studies showing coffee's potential to impair thyroxine (T4) intestinal absorption." http://www.medhelp.
Avatar m tn I am getting to a point where I dont know what to eat anymore! Has anyone else experienced this? I have been on Levothyroxine for 15 years with no issues exceot occasional increases. Back in March I changed how I take my meds from taking in AM and having coffee 15 min later to waking up taking my pill , going back to sleep and hours later having coffee! I went hyper and have been miserable ever since! Help!
Avatar m tn "Breakfast" is quickly becoming a bad word to me. I just got diagnosed, and I know there are restrictions around what you can eat because certain things affect absorption. The problem is, there is a lot of conflicting data out there, and no real solutions that I can find. I know you can't have calcium or iron supplements within 4 hours of taking levothyroxine.
Avatar m tn Certain foods, including walnuts, can interfere with the absorption of Synthroid, as well at other replacement thyroid hormones, such as Levothyroxine, Levoxyl, etc. The recommendation is to separate these foods from the medication by 2-4 hrs. Of course, it would depend on how many walnuts one is eating, but if there's proper separation there shouldn't be any trouble with absorption. Most medication pamphlets don't have some of these specific cautions on them.
252327 tn?1250183976 Most will say they take their meds in the morning at least an hour b4 eating. I recently switched to taking my Levothyroxine at night. I'm glad I switched! Waiting for that morning cup of coffee was killing me! And I didn't have any problem at all with this switch. I think most people wouldn't have an issue with a switch, but just have a feeling they might be a bit wired at night if they changed.
Avatar f tn I started on levothyroxine 50mcg two days ago. I can see that there is a lot of different advice about when the best time to take it is. I'm treated in the uk under my gp and wasn't given any advice, the packets label says in the morning. I have porridge made with milk and coffee every morning for breakfast before I go to work. Will this affect the absorption of my meds? I've seen some people take it at night but I tend to eat quite late in the evening.
1063764 tn?1272821064 I began taking the smallest dose of levothyroxine a few months ago. I know I'm not supposed to eat about an hour after I take it. However, I seem to have a problem with getting myself to take the medication when I wake up everyday, especially at the same time. So sometimes I will eat and than wait an hour or two and take it and not eat for another hour for it to absorb. I was wondering if this is still effective, or if what I'm doing is pointless?
Avatar f tn Hello! Happy Holidays! It's been a while. I recently realized that I am not supposed to take calcium or iron 4 hours after my Tirosint 100mg and liothyronine 10mg. Um, for the past few years, I've been mostly eating after an hour of taking thyroid meds (coffee with whole milk, etc.). So it's highly likely that my thyroid meds were not being absorbed properly..no wonder I needed coffee so badly, and felt awful sometimes. Wow.
Avatar n tn Does anyone take Levothyroxine and if so, what do you think of it? I have heard different things. The doctor just got me started on meds and this is what he wrote. just checking on others thoughts.
Avatar f tn 30 am. Then nothing to eat or drink for at least 30 min - 1 hour. Then breakfast (both protein and fiber), go to work, etc. About 9:30 am, I take my 2nd dose of cytomel and BP med. I used to take Aciphex for GERD but have quit taking that due to cost (insurance won't cover). I found that I have bile reflux rather than acid and if I just lay off the coffee, and eat at regular intervals the reflux is much better.
Avatar f tn My doctor suspected an allergic response to the desiccated thyroid medication and switched me to 125 mcg levothyroxine in summer 2012. I enjoyed an overall improvement in my health and energy although a family member commented that I was sometimes irritable. In October 2013 my doctor became concerned about elevated rT3 and lowered the levothyroxine to 88 mcg/day. I gradually stopped jogging but would describe the quality of this dose as low adequate.
Avatar f tn I have had twitching in my left eyelid for over a month. I'm wondering if this could be caused by hypothyroid. I do drink coffee daily, but not more than 2 cups a day. It's really beginning to bother me! Usually when I have had this type of thing in the past, it would go away on it's own. I switched from Levothyroxine to 60 MG Armour last Spring. Definitely had a period of adjustment to that!! Muscle weakness within an hour of taking it each day (and after eating).
1256167 tn?1269628350 Everyone works out whats best for them over time..Me i now only wait half hour to have my morning coffee, but an hour to eat, it is best that you are just consistent in what you do. If you are going to take at night then you cannot eat 3 hours before you take the medication. This is with the synthetic meds, i dont no with the Natural ( Armour i think it is, it might be completely different and someone will be able to help you with that..
