Common Questions and Answers about How does nitroglycerin relieve chest pain

nitrostat

Avatar f tn What I mean is, my symptoms always go away eventually so how can I tell whether it was the nitro that helped relieve them? The first time was during the afternoon last week when I was having a squeezing heaviness in the center of my chest. The nitro made my heart pound and moved the center of the heaviness upward toward my throat, and gave me a throbbing headache.
1098952 tn?1270309713 Furthermore, the treatment rationale for HCM can actually counter the rationale used to treat the same suite of symptoms in a patient who does not have HCM. For instance, many HCM patients have chest pain and shortness of breath—a common symptom of coronary artery disease that is treated with nitroglycerin. If a person with HCM were to take nitroglycerin, the symptoms would worsen and the nitroglycerin could even cause a catastrophic deterioration in the person's condition".
Avatar f tn Myocardial infarction pain is characteristically crushing retrosternal chest pain which may move to arms, shoulder, neck, teeth, jaw, belly area or back. This can be squeezing, lasting for 20 minutes. Rest and nitroglycerin may help relieve the pain to some extent. Other symptoms are anxiety, cough, dizziness, palpitations, shortness of breath etc. your doctor would like to check the cardiac enzymes like troponin and CPK, CPK MB.
Avatar m tn The pain lasts anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. I have been prescribed nitroglycerin to take as needed for chest pain and this medicine surely helps. I've had several EKGs and cardiac enzymes done which were all normal. I also had a threadmill/stress test done which was normal. My cardiologist thinks the the probability of me having an occluded/blocked coronary artery is very low.
Avatar n tn The sublingual nitroglycerin seems to work to relieve the pain/pressure when it occurs but I am still conerned over the shortness of breath and fatigue along with a low temperature..95 and widely varying resting heart rate... 46 to 78 and widely variable resting blood pressure 148/98 to 102/70 thirty minutes later. What further testing, if any, would you suggest?
Avatar n tn Angina is very common when someone has had stent implantations. I'm on medications for my angina, which surfaced after my first heart attack..however, with the medications, I no longer suffer from any angina. I guess I, as well as many others I know, are lucky since we have all felt fantastic after stent implantations. billben38us was complaining of "severe chest pain.
Avatar n tn for the last month almost constantly i get this minor but very anoying chest pain. centered. it seems to bother me mostly when im at rest. it seems to be getting more and more bothersome by the day. i had stress test done. it was negative. as well as ekgs. 2. all negative. my docter now wants me to have that die put in me. to see if there are any blokages. i was put on nexium over a year ago for very severe heartburn. currently still on it.
Avatar f tn Stopping Nitroglycerin Patch suddenly may cause serious, possibly life-threatening, WITHDRAWAL symptoms, including chest pain and heart attack. Having a nitrate-free period each day will help prevent tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal problems. Issue Date: November 5, 2008 Database Edition 08.4.1.002 Copyright © 2008 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. It is recommended to have a free period from a nitrate!. I take sublingual nitro occassionally and nitrate pill 3 times a week for many years.
Avatar n tn It does sounds like you were experiencing angina, which is chest pain that occurs when the heart muscle demands more oxygen than what is being supplied. Common caused of angina are narrowed coronary arteries and hypoxia (very low blood oxygen caused by respiratory disorders and/anemia). You should talk to your doctor as you may be a good candidate for a low dose nitroglycerin patch which opens the coronary vessels to increase oxygen supply to the heart.
Avatar n tn I was diagnose with clogged arteries over a year ago. I even had a stent put in because one of my arteries was ecluded. I still had stable angina every time I did some for of cardio activity or is I ate something with sodium. I started using Nitroglycerin patches and even have the pills just in case my angina episode occurs. I had a date and I read online that you can't take viagra and any nitrates cause it can drop your blood pressure really low.
Avatar f tn The following day I had the nuclear and echo gram test. The 3rd day I had chest discomfort again and was given nitroglycerin and immediately the discomfort was gone (first time I ever had a nitro tablet). This happened twice in my 4 day stay in the hospital. First told I had a cardiomyopathy because my stress test showed diffuse hypokinesis, stress fraction of 37% and resting fraction of 42%.
Avatar n tn It is true, nitro dilates the coronary vessels and prevents angina (chest pain). The patch should only be worn for up to 12 to 14 hours a day, or as directed by your doctor, but continued use with no interruptions can cause a tolerance for drug....It is important to have a "nitrate-free" period of time each day for Nitroglycerin Patch to continue to work well and to decrease the risk of physical dependence.
Avatar m tn Sorry- you may need more info. I have been to the ER twice for the same symptoms. All tests are negative. Sharp pain between and under shoulder blades. First time was the left side second time was the right. Pain in solar plexis and rib cage, feels like someone used me as a punching bag. Also sharp pain in chest and painful when breathing. After reading other posts am convinced it is gas but there are no meds to relieve this type of gas!!! How do I relieve pain so I don't have to go to ER?
Avatar f tn I was in the ER yesterday with chest pain and shortness of breath. I do have benign PVCs. However I am unsure if my EKG was fully normal or not although I am pretty sure it was but what has me questioning it is the fact that I was given 4 aspirin and 2 nitroglycerin pills. My vent rate 126bpm PR interval 152 ms QRS duration 76 ms QT/QTc 306/443 ms P-R-T axes 71 66 47 Are those all normal? I do have high blood pressure lately along with an almost constant high heart rate.
Avatar n tn Is it typical to have intermittent chest pain for the last two weeks since having my proximal LAD stented (coated stent)? I have resorted to nitroglycerin several times with mixed results. Today, I had some lightheadedness and shortness of breath with the chest pain, but a couple of hours later, and 3-4 sprays of nitro it is resolved.
Avatar m tn If you feel chest pain put a nitro pill under your tongue, if the pain doesn’t go away in 5 mins take another, if it still doesn’t go away then call 911. The make it sound as simple as; brush and floss every day. Don’t need any advice on the lifestyle modifications, I already practice all of that and I had further progression anyway. At this point I am considering a non-meat lifestyle.
Avatar m tn She healed well, but 2 weeks ago while at home she experienced chest pain. She went by ambulance to the hospital. An angiogram was performed and her left circumflex bypass failed. The docotors put a stent in her actual left circumflex coronary artery. She stayed in the hospital for a few days and was released. Now, she is back in the hospital due to chest pain again. The doctors say there is nothing they can do for her and that everything looks good and she will have to live with the pain.
Avatar m tn The same with his recent heart catherization was chest pressure. In the ER he was given 2 nitroglycerin, 5 minutes apart, the chest pressure went away after the 2nd nitroglycerin. Does any good specialist in cardiology think that my husband should have the open heart surgery for bypasses considering the risks regarding his age, his diabetes? I would appreciate very explanatory answers, easy to understand, what to do in my husband's situation. Thankyou.
Avatar f tn It sounds like you have had the same issues I had. I went through three trips to the er in 3 mos. 3 or 5 trips to walk in doctors. EKG's were always perfect, blood work fine, bp and pulse fine. Finally had an angiogram where they found my LAD was bridged. They put a stent in and I was fine for a while. Now I am having symptoms again(they don't seem to be the same as before). I am wondering if it isn't something GI from the meds and probably even more likely just anxiety this time.
Avatar f tn The first week I had bronchitis. After that cleared, I began having chest pain and shortness of breath. Everyone dismissed my symptoms because I was a young female. I had a hysterectomy in 2009 but they said I still had estrigen to help prevent heart problems. After three weeks of testing (lung vq scan, GERD, and anxiety), a heart cath was done. Cardiologist said I had myocardial bridge (left artery), hypertension, and thick wall.
572651 tn?1530999357 I have nitroquik - sublingual nitroglycerin - to take if I have angina pains - this morning about 5 am I was miserable and couldn't tell if it was heart or ms symptoms and I took one. As always it stopped my discomfort, depressed my already low blood pressure and I went to sleep for about 3 hours. I've used nitroquik for the past 3 months or so and it always stops the pain and gives me relief within minutes.
Avatar f tn There is different chest pain that is associated with MVP than with angina (chest pain...occluded coronary vessels) and following may help you distinquish. For some insight, Mitral valve prolapse: It is a common heart valve abnormality, affecting 5% to 10% of the population. MVP is especially common among women between 20 to 40 years of age. Chest pain with MVP is usually sharp but not severe.
Avatar n tn what is the chance of heart attack if the chest pain continue due to coronary artery spasm? can the use if ephedrine cause coronary artery spasm?
Avatar n tn not similar to pain before stent inserted. Former pain was in chest, jaw, and arm. Is this heart related or spine ? Usually occurs at night, wakes me up. Very infrequent.
Avatar n tn t offer any specific knowledge other than I have know people who have heart pain and take nitroglycerin (I believe it is) to relieve the pain. The one person I recall was older than 20, but was just middle age when he had that prescribed. He said he also has some heart rhythm problems but does not take any treatment for those.
Avatar n tn Apsrin 81mg Bupropion XL 300mg (for depression, taking roughly 1yr) Clopidogrel 75mg Metoprolol Succ 25mg (2x day) Atorvastatin 40mg Lisiniopril 5mg Nitroglycerin (as needed) Famotidine 20mg (2x day) Sucralfate (4x day w/ meals and before bed) Roughly 4 weeks ago I began to feel tightness in my chest with pain radiating into my left arm. I went to the ER and they checked my blood work and determined that I was not having an heart attack. However they did refer me to a cardiologist.
