Everyone is different when it comes to medications and their thyroid disease-though weight loss is more common of Graves' disease, some people gain, just like some people lose weight being hypo.
I was on 5 of methimazole myself when diagnosed with Graves', and gained 15lbs. For me, it was much needed-I had lost nearly thirty pounds in just a few short months being un-medicated.
I gained weight before RAI ..with Graves but years prior, I would go through 'skinny and fat' stages.
I gained 11 kilograms prior to RAI and honestly believe it was the anti-thyroid meds that did it.
Its depressing I know...I think we have all been there at some stage but until your levels are stable, you will not lose much weight and being hyper means you have to limit your exersise because of the fast heartrate.

I am a 33 yr old female who was diagnosed with Graves disease almost 2 yrs ago. At this point it is pretty much out of control and I am having problems getting into see an Endo. My TSH is .009, T3 1329 and T4 3.94. I have had a numerous amount of symptoms develop over the last few months the one that concerns me the most is a constant feeling of someone chocking me. Although my levels are extremely high I have still managed to gain 25lbs over the past year and a half.
I was diagnosed with graves disease/hyperthyroidism/goiter back in 94.
My entire thyroid was removed, at the time was 100 lbs. It did take about a year to find the correct dosage i needed to be on, but they did. Since the surgery I have not weighed more than 120, sure i will gain if i do not eat properly, but for the last 12 years i have been between 115-120 and i am 5'2. Right now i am at about 105 but that is a different story. I never gained the 300 lbs everyone thought i would.
Hi All, i was diagnosed with graves disease in December 2011, felt all the typical hyperthyroid symptoms, except I put on 6-8 kg between may to november 2011. I was put on 40mg neo mercazole in December, and my endo reduced it to 20mg/day in January, when my T3 and T4 were within normal range, except for very low TSH. I also had bulging eyes in December, which was reduced significantly by March 2012, when my T4 and TSH were normal, but T3 below normal.
Yeah sounds like she could indeed have a thyroid disease. Graves disease in particular starts off overactive, and symptoms are usually ignored or not noticed...for me it was impossible to gain weight, I had way too much energy and difficulty sleeping. When the thyroid gets overworked though the opposite happens and you become underactive, very quick weight gain and extreme tiredness.
Diagnosed today with Graves disease. I'm a 39 yr old female. Worried about weight gain on Methimazole. Can I take appetite suppressants with this medication?

Which states you are hyperthyroid and T-3 toxicosis which is seen in Graves' disease. This could be the reason for your fatigue and possibly weight gain. Not all hypers lose weight.
The solution for thyroid is to get treatment for the hyper side of the disease. Either RAI or ATDs. Surgery is an option with growing, hyperfunctioning nodule or thyroid cancer, which would entail more test to verify.
MY TSH IS LOW BUT MY T3 AND T4 ARE NORMAL MY TPO WAS OVER 24,000 MY TPI WAS ELEVATED AND MY SCAN SHOWED NODULES AND GRAVES BUT AGAIN I DO NOT HAVE ANY SYMPTOMS BUT WEIGHT WHICH RIGHT NOW I AM OK WITH AS MY WEIGHT CURRENTLY IS 145. I HAVE THE MEDICATION TAPAZOLE 5MG BUT MY ENDO TOLD ME TO JUST TAKE 1/2 A PILL EVERY OTHER DAY. I WAS JUST HOPING THAT MAYBE IT WOULD HELP LOSE THE COUPLE OF POUNDS I HAVE GAINED.
hi im 37 and was diagnosed with Graves in March 2008. I lost alot of weight since march 2008 until now, were the weight is without increased diet piling back onn rapidly. I feel ok at present I have no tremors heart racing nothing atall. Sometimes im like a bear with a saw head but other than that i feel well. I have not taken any medication for my graves because of fear of gaining weight , Please can you answer why my weight has increased without any meds????
I think we might be missing the obvious here. If you are dianosed (by a Doctor!) with hyperthyroidism, then we would like to assume that you are being treated for it. If you are, and the meds you are taking are working as they are supposed to (as we all hope ours are!), then you can hope that your system is in balance and you are potentially...normal! Then, all things considered, weight gain is probably the simple reuslt of poor diet or lack of proper exercise!! Just a thought!!
