Avatar n tn Thyroxin doesnt make you gain the weight...unstable levels do. Once you go hypo after RAI (I went hypo after 5 weeks)....then thyroxin will help you stabalise your levels. Good luck with the RAI....its nowhere near as bad as Hyperthyroidism and Graves. You will feel like a new person after the RAI. The symptoms arent so severe either...when you go hyper/hypo. Just make sure your Doc doesnt let your TSH go higher than 10.0 before you start on a low dose of thyroxin. Yell out if you need to vent.
5820022 tn?1378512355 Hello all, I'm going to attempt to describe my situation in full and I would greatly appreciate any advice or encouragement from fellow hyperthyroidic patients or doctors who treat them. Three months ago I went to my general practitioner in hopes of finding a treatment for my severe migraines. The nurse noticed that my pulse was extremely high at resting (155). This led to blood tests an more visits, resulting in a diagnosis of Graves' disease induced hyperthyroidism.
Avatar f tn Make sure they test for Free T3 and Free T4, not Total T3 and Total T4. Most serum T3 and T4 is bound to protein and thus not biologically active. Only the small portion of thyroid hormone that is free of protein is biologically active. So, you need to know Free T3 and Free T4.
Avatar f tn Additional - I searched this forum for hyperthyroidism and weight gain and got many results. Seems it does happen to a few of us though we are the minority.
Avatar f tn And doctors do not believe anything I say about what has been going on with my body, my symptoms, and my weight. With the weight gain from graves and graves; eye disease..I do not want to be seen or go out and run into people.
Avatar n tn I am only addressing the thyroid levels. Which states you are hyperthyroid and T-3 toxicosis which is seen in Graves' disease. This could be the reason for your fatigue and possibly weight gain. Not all hypers lose weight. The solution for thyroid is to get treatment for the hyper side of the disease. Either RAI or ATDs. Surgery is an option with growing, hyperfunctioning nodule or thyroid cancer, which would entail more test to verify.
Avatar f tn Most lose due to the metobolism speeding up and with your weight gain your doctor and you may want to look at progesterone/estradiol and testosterone levels very close to see if you have a pattern there that could be causing these issues to rise. Also where is the weight gain? Is it a pooch belly fat? That then, should be a sign of looking at some adrenal issues first too - before assuming its all thyroid related.
Avatar n tn I got the radioactive Iodine treatment done and they told me that my appetite needed to be worked on and that i might gain a little weight. And boy where they right. My weight jumped up to a whopping 210 lbs. So i started working out and now am back to 155 lbs and look and feel fantastic. So if u ever feel that you are stuck just know that you can do it. Avatar n tn They wanted to start treatment right then for Hyper. I was concerned that her earlier weight gain was related and was uncomfortable treating for one. I made an appointment with a different Endo. This Endo agreed that it appeared that she was cycling between the two conditions and ran more tests that showed the presence of both antibodies. He concurred that treatment for one could cause problems when she cycled to the other.
Avatar f tn Diagnosed today with Graves disease. I'm a 39 yr old female. Worried about weight gain on Methimazole. Can I take appetite suppressants with this medication?
Avatar f tn now I am being put on 5 mg of methimazole, and I’m reading that this will slow my metabolism and cause weight GAIN! I am so bummed and frustrated. Can I ever shed this weight? I had lost 50 lbs 5 years ago, and I am depressed after putting on so much. Any advice??
Avatar f tn Everyone is different when it comes to medications and their thyroid disease-though weight loss is more common of Graves' disease, some people gain, just like some people lose weight being hypo. I was on 5 of methimazole myself when diagnosed with Graves', and gained 15lbs. For me, it was much needed-I had lost nearly thirty pounds in just a few short months being un-medicated.
Avatar n tn If you had a solid Dx of Graves Disease a while back and some endo is telling you to stop eating cheese burgers. I think it's time to move on to a new doctor. Maybe someone you has a better interaction with their patients. Your cholesterol is way out of range. Did anyone treat you for that at least? It looks as if you have a background in education as a music teacher. I would be singing another tune to a new doctor that would give you the help you really deserve.
Avatar f tn I wasn’t anoerexic just built small and short so weighing 85 lbs then was normal. I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism in June 2008 and I also have Graves Disease, I now weigh 110 lbs, I gained that 15 lbs within 6 months, that sounds skinny to most people but I used to NOT gain weight no matter how much I ate before I had a thyroid problem so I now exercise and watch what I eat since I can easily gain weight.
Avatar n tn I am currently undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer and my daughter had Graves disease and hyperactive thyroid 2 years ago. She had to have hers removed and it actually had cancer in it as well. She had the same symptom as you and gained weight. It is not the norm but we were told it could happen.
Avatar f tn “Long-term, low-dose methimazole treatment for 60-120 months is a safe and effective treatment for Graves hyperthyroidism and is accompanied by much higher remission rates than the usual 18-24 months of methimazole treatment,” he summarized.
Avatar f tn My mother was diagnosed in her early 40s with graves disease and her thyroid was removed, around the same time she was diagnosed with stage 3-4 colon cancer. I'm aware there are connections between autoimmune diseases and thyroid and intestinal diseases/conditions. As I'm getting older I'm noticing I'm following in the same physiological footsteps my mother did before she was diagnosed.
Avatar n tn Do you ever see a patient who has graves disease and is actually gained weight?
Avatar n tn Several years ago, I visited my GP and presented with the following symptoms: fatigue, weight gain, high blood pressure, general weakness, low tolerance for heat but hands and feet - even my nose- often cold, goiter, difficulty staying focused on tasks, dry skin, dry hair that breaks easily with some hair loss. After the "glow test" and blood work, my GP diagnosed me with Graves Disease and referred me to an endocrinologist. Both doctors recommended my thyroid be removed.
Avatar n tn I am a 33 yr old female who was diagnosed with Graves disease almost 2 yrs ago. At this point it is pretty much out of control and I am having problems getting into see an Endo. My TSH is .009, T3 1329 and T4 3.94. I have had a numerous amount of symptoms develop over the last few months the one that concerns me the most is a constant feeling of someone chocking me. Although my levels are extremely high I have still managed to gain 25lbs over the past year and a half.
