Fosamax and brittle bones

Common Questions and Answers about Fosamax and brittle bones

fosamax

Avatar f tn I do want to caution your use of the Fosamax though. New studies have shown issues with femur bone fractures (brittle bone) and esophagal problems. There are other ways to strengthen bones naturally without taking biphosphonates. I'd get your vitamin D & calcium levels checked too since an underactive thryoid can cause problems with metabolism/regeneration of bone (so can too much thryoid hormone!) That is what makes Hashis difficult to deal with due to the hyper/hypo rollercoaster.
Avatar m tn Food and Drug Administration raised concerns about the potential for some serious side effects in women taking bone-building drugs called bisphosphonates, specifically Fosamax, Actonel and Reclast. The published findings are not new.
Avatar n tn Osteoporosis- is a degeneration of bone. It can lead to brittle bones and breaks of major bones. Osteoarthritis- is a degeneration of the joint. typically caused by wear and tear.
7469840 tn?1409845836 Hi All, So my fellow Hepper and good friend AlmostSixty said her HepC doctor had ordered a dexascan for her because HepC Tx can affect the bones. And so I requested one, and got a call today that I have osteoporosis. I don't have any numbers, and will be meeting with my new Medicare GP later this week. I am a 65 year-old woman, I walk a vigorous 2.5 miles 3 times a week, just hiked 18 miles at the Grand Canyon, how can this be? So I am not sure if it is a result of Tx, or just getting old.
Avatar f tn Her doctor seems to think that because she has shrunk by 2-1/2 inches, the problem is that her bones are compressing, and when she is sitting her ribs are bowing out and causing the discomfort due to the compression. He says nothing can be done to alleviate the discomfort. Does this sound plausible -- especially not being able to provide relief?
Avatar n tn No I am not, I am only on tapazole, don't have a problem with bones yet, I am going to have surgery on feb 6
Avatar m tn Hi. So, are you talking about 'bent' bones and not fractures? A complete fracture is when a bone breaks all the way through and the other is when it doesn't so the bones 'bend' or look bent. How old are you, if you don't mind me asking and how long has this been an issue that you've noticed? There is a rare disease called 'bent bone dysplasia syndrome' But am guessing you don't have this as it has a host of features and is very serious.
Avatar f tn I see you have MD in your tagline, are you a physician? I understand that calcium is leaching from my bones, and I have been on replacement therapy for that. In fact, I just completed the IV Reclast last month. I need to know what else can be done, or do I just have to live with this. By the way, in researching PTH, arrythmia's were a symptom of hyperPTHism.
1415174 tn?1453243103 Just had a bone scan and my bones are great for a 51 year old and I am slightly overweight and in menopause, but my mother and grandmother have/had great bones. The extra weight is like weight bearing for those bones. I do strength training mixed with aerobic exercise. I say get out and walk more (brisk) and avoid excessively sitting. Too much sitting is terrible for someone with back issues. Yes, I know all about that.
Avatar f tn I continued to take the fosamax thoughout my tx and did not clear the virus, so would surmise the improvement was from the fosamax and not anything else. So yes, there is a way to reverse your bone loss and I am surprised your doctor has not suggested fosamax or the generic equivalent.
Avatar n tn I heard that with extended use bones will become more brittle with increased % of fractures occurring. Is this correct? If so, At what point (after how many years) is this a problem?
Avatar f tn I have taken fosamax and actonel and have had stomach problems and aching bones. My doctor is thinking about the yearly injection of reclast. How safe is it and will I have more problems with my bones aching - I can't sleep at night a lot from the pain. This discussion is related to Atrial Fibulation / Multi-Infarct Dimentia.
Avatar f tn I am taking Ipriflavone and Calcium with Vitamin D3 for my bone health. The Dr. prescribed Fosamax, but after reading about how it can cause weak bones, (what it's supposed to help) I discovered Ipriflavone. It's a bone builder that muscle builders use - I have fallen and not broken any bones - (I have osteopenia) I am sorry to say that I really don't know what would help your hearing loss - I think I would research all the vitamins and minerals to find something if it were me.
Avatar m tn Fosamax has been linked in long-term users to the development of low-impact femoral fractures. In the event of a fracture fosamax may interfere with remodeling and healing. However, the decision to continue or quit would need to be taken by his treating doctor; keeping in view the initial condition for which it was advised and the risks Vs benefits. You may like to discus in detail with his treating doctor. Hope this is helpful. Take care!
691935 tn?1421027090 There were no significant differences between the groups in age or gender. Mean lumbar vertebral bone mineral density and mean z-scores in groups 1 and 2 before and after treatment were not significantly different. In both groups, serum and urinary biochemical values and bone markers were all normal and there were no differences between the pretreatment and post-treatment values.
Avatar m tn My mom is taking Fosamax [Alendronic Acid], she is taking it exactly as directed and is still getting terriible burning in her esophagus. She is really suffering. She says there are no alternative medications she can switch to. Are there any remedys she can take to help ease the burning in her esophagus? Supplements, Vitamins, anything like that? Any help anyone can give me would be greatle appreciated, as i Said, she is really suffering Thanks in Advance!
Avatar n tn Do you mean Fosamax (alendronate)? If you do, its for treating bone problems like Osteoperosis by adding bone mass and slows bone loss. I use it for Osteopenia.
Avatar f tn I stopped taking Fosamax before the extraction (I had taken it for less than 4 years) and am not going to take the drug again. Is there concern that I will have a complication because of the Fosamax? I had hoped for a bone graft and/or socket perservation...
Avatar f tn Keep in mind that bone will form a callus, new bone around a fracture despitew displacement and if you wait too long the surgeon will literally have to re break the bone/bones.
