Hi, Leukonychia is white streaks or spots on the nails. Leukonychia Partialis in particular is whitening of parts of the nail. There are several types of this condition: 1. leukonychia striata is a whitening or discoloration of the nail in bands or "stria". It may be caused by cirrhosis, chemotherapy, or physical injury to the nail matrix; 2. true leukonychia is the most common form wherein small white spots on the nails appear.
At the top of the fingernail, where it grows out fron the finger, is a small semi-circle of white then the rest of the finger nail is pinkish. Prior to moving to where I now live my nails all had this little area now 3 years later only my thumbs do. Can anyone tell me if this is something to be concerned about? Thanks for any help!!

They are growing fine, and don't split that much or break often. It's the way they look. The tips are white and healthy, but just under the white tip it's red for about 1/16 or so of inch, very small area then the normal pink of the nail. I also have some faint vertical lines. Does anyone have this? Could it be my Armour dose was working for a short time, and now it's not?
The most common cause of indentation is a thumbnail is the habit of picking at the base of the nail, which irritates the growth area (the white, semicircular part near the base). This causes the nail to have a groove. The treatment is not to pick at the base of the nail. I don't know whether this applies to you, so a visit to a dermatologist would be the way to go. Take care. Dr.
I have discoloration on 2 of my nails and 1 of my nails is a little green and the other is like a gray white color and I have been looking on the internet and they have pictures of what fungus looks like so I believe that it is an fungal infection. So I wanted to know what can I do for it? And what kind of doctor should I go see? And who can I go see that is in Cincinnati, Ohio?
Hello, From the symptoms your son seems to be having koilonychia. It is an abnormal shape of the fingernail. The nail has raised ridges and is thin and curved inward. This disorder is associated with iron deficiency anemia. The other possibility which can present with nail pitting as well thick, white, silvery, or red patches of skin is psoriasis. It is thought that psoriasis occurs when the immune system overreacts, causing inflammation and flaking of skin.
About two months ago my fingernail developed a black mark near the nailbed. It has since continued up toward the top of the nail while changing brownish now puple with the uppermost tip is turning white. I have an appointment in October. It doesn't hurt and does not appear to look fungal according to my doctor. Is October to long to wait? I read that melanoma can develop under the nail.
When I bend my fingers upward, it feels as if the bottom of the finger is being stretched like a rubber band. At this point I can see a space between the dead, white nail and the nail-bed that is clear. I would like to know if this is a condition all its own, and if so what it is called. I know that I will be able to treat it by simply forcing myself to break this compulsive habit, but if there is anything that could restore the health to my nails, please suggest it.
I stopped using the pink and white process, thinking I might be allergic to that. Now, I've just been getting nails buffed and painted (3 coats to cover mottled colors). I am at my wit's end. I take much pride in my hygiene, grooming appearance. Don't know if this could be a breakdown in my immune system, (healthy and fit otherwise), or a dietary thing or some other cause. It's not my nail shop. None of my friends who go there have this problem. Please help!
I was just noticing the same thing on my nail beds. Really dark half moon circles. Hands are pasty white too ! However no fungus and my nails are growing like hotcakes ! Figure that one out ??? On week 13, just finished Inc.
I have been diagnosed with fingernail fungus - 6 out of 10 nails - I tried over the counter medications - they di not work. My Dr. prescribed a new oral anti-fungal med that requires a blood test prior to starting the dosage (this test is a liver function test) which I had done. I took the med for 6 days and developed a sever allergic reaction. I had to stop the med and take steroids to counteract the affects of the fungal med.
My thumb I will try to explain what it looks like. At the tip of the nail it is white like it should be, well that whiteness runs down the side of my thumb also. Where the whiteness ends the nail looks like it has a bump under it. It is hard to explain. Hope this sounds familar to someone.
ok here is the pic, the white bits are bits of my fingernail that still remains. should i keep it covered at all times or give it chance to breathe? do u think i could grow back?
I am a white, 50 yr old woman who has recently developed a single, gray streak which begins at the cuticle and extends the length of the nail on my index finger. The line to the naked eye looks regular, it looks rather transparent and faint in color and is app. 2mm in width, no Hutch sign to the naked eye and the nail plate is not disfigured. I have read that subungual melanoma is usually black-brown, and irregular.

needless to say, the pvc's came back 3 weeks later. i also noticed lately that my fingernail beds are really pale but at the end behing the white part it is a dark pink. does anybody else notice this? i know that nails can give clues to health problems and i read that it can be related to heart problems. the cause of the pvc's was never known because i don't have insurance and couldn't afford to continue testing for it. all i had was bloodwork and ekg.
Hi Doc, Thought that I would post here, beings that we do not have a dermatologist in town. One does pass through a few times a year but I would, if possible, get an idea of what this is and then pass this onto my doctor. This year, I have had skin changes and in a number of places. Earlier this year, I noticed petichia spots on my inner thighs and had thought that perhaps the antibiotics that I was on were causing this. Mind you, there were only about 3-5 spots on each inner thigh.
He was wearing contacts at the time. The outer white part of the eye is red. It bled a little bit. I believe there is a little tear and abrasion to the eye. I put cold ice in a bag with a paper towel wet and kept it on his eye for 15 minutes. What is the best way to take care of this? We don't have any insurance and are unemployed. Any advice would be appreciated. Is his eye in any danger?
connection between fingernail and finger is slowly lost, area where under nail where it is closely connected with skin is receding/recoiling - normally under nail there is close connection between finger and nail, but some months ago some fingers showed wider white area under nail closer to fingertip, nails does not seem to be connected to finger skin under nail on fingertip side. The line where connection starts has recoiled and connection line is jaggy.
I am getting white spots under my skin that itch. I can pick them out with my fingernail. They are hard, don't crawl or move after I get them out from under my skin. They also are on my feet and toes. Is anyone else familiar with these symptoms?
I am having recurring white bumps to appear on my face. Usually just one or two. At first I thought they were white heads, but they are not. They are very hard and have not infection inside them like a white head. I can "scrape" them off with my fingernail down to a certain level, but they always reappear. What are they....and what can I do to get rid of them. They really do like a big white "zit." They are embarassing for someone 56 years old!
After I pulled it out, it was about a 1/4 of an inch long. It looks like it is made out of a fingernail, and it is hard like fingernail material. I noticed many other people have these, but no one seems to know what they are. It is not attached to any other hair. It has its own follicle. Any ideas?
Hi. I'm 14 years old. I looked in the mirror this morning and I noticed little white spots running down my tongue on the right side. They are painless and i counted 5 of them. I brushed my teeth and rinsed with mouthwash and they're still there. i tried scraping one off with my fingernail, but it didn't come off. I google it, and toothbrush keratosis is the closest thing I could find to it, but I'm not sure. I had a headache almost all day yesterday, and I don't know if that's connected to it.
