4884322 tn?1360506108 My goodness. You had a procedure in which they drew your arterial blood gases. That is done by putting a needle into the wrists to find the artery. Newly minted physicians, nurse practicioners, paramedics and PA's have to be certified by drawing three to five of them in a hospital. The liklihood is you got a trainee and yours was his/her first. In fairness, the technique is difficult to learn. Because teaching hospitals are there to "teach" they are often performed unnecessarily.
Avatar m tn His doctor says that his blood sugars are well controlled, and he even wakes with low blood sugar (2 m.mol), and has to get up and eat to correct this. He takes his own blood sugars every day as well as 6 monthly testing by the diabetic nurse, but I am worried about possible Ketoacidosis.
Avatar n tn I firmly believe that used (not excessively) for diabetics, that pot can help a vast number diabetic complications and symptoms. This has been backed up recently by research on weed and diabetes. There was a study in may of 2015 that proved what i had ben claiming for a long time. specifically in relation to inflamation, neuropathy, gastroparesis, and muscle pain, related to diabetes.

Avatar n tn I have recently, the last month or so, began having shortness of breath, less frequently...palpitations. Arterial blood gases normal, pulse ox 100%. Healthful information: vegetarian (i eat dairy), low iron, work midnight shift, usually get about 4-5 hrs of sleep during the day, if Im lucky. Could sleep deprivation cause any of this? Avatar n tn I am a school nurse with a diabetic student who has trace to moderate ketones and sugar in the 300 range. The student has only vomited a couple of times Mom says she has called the MD and they say only give water. The student was here at school yesterday, and she is at home today. What would the treatment be for this case?
Avatar n tn I am not a medical professional but I have been type 1 diabetic for 12 years and have several siblings who are also type 1 diabetic so it's safe to say that I know what I'm talking about. The primary cause of keytones in the blood system is a high blood sugar. Stress and sickness simply make it so that keytones can develop at blood sugars that are normally not good but easily dealt with.
1416835 tn?1295811283 These are arterial blood gases. I suggest you talk to your doctor about all these lab results, he/she will be able to explain everything a lot better than I can.
Avatar f tn But that can be expected when you are ill. They have been running at about 150 to 200. It is not ketoacidosis. I am also a diabetic and know the signs. It was the first thing we had checked. I guess my main concern is that he is so weak and tired. I am at my wits end. Maybe returning to the ER for an IV to give him fluid and nutrients that he is unable to ingest is the only thing to do. Thanks again.
484160 tn?1343397921 She is now in intensive care. The doctors are saying it is the worst case they have ever seen. Her blood sugar was 348 today, her blood pressure is through the roof. Yesterday morning they thought she'd had a stroke. She couldn't speak. She can't stop shaking. They have her on IV morphine, demerol and something else for pain, plus medication for nausea and she isn't even allowed a sip of water.
1327535 tn?1295227611 Although rare in t2 diabetics, the possibility of diabetic ketoacidosis, a life threatening complication, may have surfaced. Get off the computer and call your doctor now.
Avatar n tn I am volunteer, and the mom of a type one and daughter of a type 2 diabetic, not a physician. I can tell you that ketoneacidosis is not to be taken lightly. It is recommended that you call your physician when ketones are present. Ketones usually happen when your blood sugars are running over 250 , it happens a by product when the body is running high it breaks down fat cells to get energy, when this happens the side effect is ketoacidosis.
Avatar f tn A sickeningly sweet smell is usually due to diabetic ketoacidosis and if felt in urine and sweat. I understand that diabetes is under control—was a gylcosylated hemoglobin done to check the over all control? The second possibility is menopause. Get FSH, LH, estrogen and progesterone levels checked. If found in menopausal age group, then hormone replacement therapy will help take care of the odor. Take care!
Avatar f tn s urine or blood shows large amounts of ketones, this can lead to Diabetic Ketoacidosis or DKA. This is a life-threatening emergency which occurs when blood sugars have been consistenly over 300. This occurs more commonly in Type 1's, often at diagnosis, but can also occur in Type 2's who have been diagnosed long enough that they don't produce much insulin or the insulin production is overwhelmed by serious infection or stress.
961466 tn?1247550382 DKA is Diabetic Ketoacidosis. It is an extremely dangerous condition which comes about from blood sugars being consistently extremely high as in 300s or higher. It makes you ill, often feels like the flu and if not treated can be fatal in a manner of days. It is not something to be posting on a website about. It is something to go to the ER. Now! Even if it is not DKA, your wife is unable to get out of bed and you are posting to a website??? Get medical help.
Avatar n tn s version of ketoacidosis and there is probably a more scientifc explanation. The bottom line is that ketoacidis left untreated can have very serious consequences. It sound s like you may be experiencing periodic ketoacidosis, but not to the point where you can't use any of the food you are eating. The bloated heavier feeling could result from higher blood sugars, weight gain from eating more or water retention form the stress on your system.
Tbd If you feel bad, please go to the nearest emergency room. You are potentially at risk of diabetic ketoacidosis. Please make sure the people you are living with know what is going on and if you are acting strange / appear unwell, they should take you to nearest medical attention.
Avatar n tn My son has the type of pump that you program information into such as 1 unit of insulin per x amount of carbs, etc. So, he does not have to do the math. He simply enters his blood sugar and then enters the amt. of carbs and the pump will figure out how much insulin to give him. We do have limits set, so he cannot give over a certain amount at one time. I am not familiar with all pumps. When you say he had a problem controlling it after dinner, are you saying he was having lows or highs?
Avatar f tn Yes DKA aka diabetic ketoacidosis has those symptoms but so does high blood sugar in general. She has the 4 common symptoms of diabetes seen in kiddos.
1436324 tn?1283698760 Dietary ketosis caused by fasting or eating very low carb is not the same thing as DKA (Diabetic ketoacidosis). DKA is a state of exreme and uncontrolled ketosis and will result after a period of time of very high blood sugars. People on low carb diets produce some ketones but it is not dangerous unless you have very high blood sugars consistently. Two very different things.
