691463 tn?1227419054 we have an elderly cat of 17, he is suddenely much more lethargic than usual, as if in a daze and drooling heavily, we wonder if he may have had a stroke, he experienced something like a seizure couple of weeks ago.
11360622 tn?1417799519 We never want our beloved best friend to ever feel they are no longer important and ignore them. That is how elderly cats spend their last days in a Rescue...and it is a troubling thing to see. Senior cats should see the vet once a year for a complete health checkup--diabetes, kidney disease, Hyperthyroidism will sneak up on you as they age and they will need specific meds to help them along.
496949 tn?1209721192 She should have been having regular checkups through her life, especially as she entered her senior years. 19 is old for a cat (mine just died at 18). Older cats frequently suffer from diabetes, CRF (chronic renal failure), heart problems - all the things that elderly humans can suffer. Older cats do have a tendency to sleep much more as well. Please do get her to a veterinarian as soon as possible.
Avatar f tn Try different types and consistencies of litter in several boxes all in different areas of the house, cats can be very particular of the type and scent vs non scented litter also the location. If there is nothing medically wrong ( are you sure did the Vet do a urine and test her PH?) than its due to her not being pleased with something.
7052683 tn?1392938795 This is soooo sad. Believe me I have volunteered in Rescue a long time and, elderly cats especially, will wither and die if they are taken to a shelter. They just do not know what is happening the one they loved so much has left them in this place to die? So If you LOVE your furballs, as I know we all do, PLEAS think NOW about making arrangements for them. Do not just leave them. Some have been found in homes after their owner has died and are near death themselves with no food . OH!
Avatar f tn t realize that steroids can induce diabetes, but it can. It can happen to people, too. Diabetes was induced in our cat that received steroid shots for a few months. If you're cat is eating a lot, and still losing weight, then it is likely your cat has either steroid induced diabetes or a thyroid condition. Good luck and please let us know how he's doing.
974371 tn?1424653129 Too many times people drop these elderly cats off and they sit in a corner day after day just waiting to die, As I write this it brings tears to my eyes. First your friend driving that distance is an angel and I am sure he does not want to see him in any ole rescue. Soo I am going to suggest he do what I did with elderly cats. I went to various Senior citizen homes and asked--begged them to give these gys a chance there.
152660 tn?1291755571 Hi there, Okay, I have a few questions to ask you. How many cats do you have ? How old are they? How long have you had them? We have a cat too who is very good at climbing. You mentioned putting up a baby gate to keep your cats and the dog you're thinking of getting apart. If your cats are as good as my cat as climbing, this won't work. Cats can climb baby gates. We have tried putting a baby gate up at the foot of the stairs. We live in a townhouse.
4105307 tn?1369531432 s is a rare disorder of cats, with less than 100 cats ever reported. As in dogs, most cats have the pituitary-dependent form of hyperadrenocorticism, but cortisol-secreting adrenal tumors also occur in cats with some frequency (1,3). Many of these cats develop mild diabetes secondary to insulin resistance. With treatment of the hypercortisolism, the diabetic state may be reversible in cats with Cushing's syndrome.
Avatar n tn The symptoms you are describing sound like a type of blood clot that can happen in older cats and/or cats with heart disease. They become unable to move their hind quarters, sometimes completely. You can take her to the vet to see if this is the case. This condition causes extreme pain, fear, and suffering to the animals who endure it. It can go on for quite a while-- not a quiet, quick, peaceful situation for an animal.
131114 tn?1380083190 ) You can also read up on an amino acid called L-theanine, it is sometimes used to treat hbp and racing heart in cats...trouble is I don't know the dosage....I will also send you a link to the best L-theanine for use with cats if you and your Vet decided to try that route...first here are the meds.. keep us posted♥ http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=1215 http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?
1979418 tn?1432135441 No talking sensse into her, so she decides they can live in her mini van... she diappears again, drives to my sister in law work where two cats apparently jump out the window, so we are down to 9 cats in the cat van parade.... She ends up back at my aunts and spends the night there, cats int he van and I am able to arrange with animal control to investigate. But, they get there and can't seize the cats cause its on private property.
1460724 tn?1285932386 She lost weight and I took her to the vet and was treated for urinary tract infection. Ever since that time she is now the most aggressive of all the cats (as I come in the house, she is waiting there MEOWING at the top of her lungs). She no long hides, she appears to be always hungry and her preference is canned food and IAMS hairball dry food, she is thin, but still very active, jumping, chasing things and will nip you if you don't pet her when she wants.
10926713 tn?1413873640 You cannot go wrong if you treat her the way you would your elderly mom or dad... Your love and caring is all she needs in these last years. Let us know how things are going , we like to keep tabs on our seniors....we will ALL be there on day. Best wishes to you and your aging Queen.
Avatar f tn yes please do check out that very informative site....this Dr. Pierson gives really indepth info also instructions on how to do home blood glucose monitoring...anyone with a diabetic cat needs this as their bible:)) Pip....I just re-read Dr. Piersons site...and she has it written right there that a low carb diet has reduced or eliminated the need for insulin...I will copy some of the studies she has quotes...great job papa cat!!!
12629092 tn?1426354227 Hi Sparkle, You are pretty wonderful for taking on this elderly cat. These poor cats all too often end up in Rescues where they just wither away alone . No one want to adopt them so they live their lonely days out without the love and care of their human whom they loved. I wondered sometimes if they ever really wanted to continue living without someone to love them one on one. VERY Sad. So now you have this cat who is very lucky to be with you and cared for by you.
Avatar f tn My 82 yr old grandmother was rushed to er room 22 days ago - she was in a nursing home because of diabetes which will go from 40 to 500 in an instant and the beginning stages of dementia. She had a heart attack in the ambulance and it took 2 mins to revive her. She stayed in ICU on a ventilator for 11 days. During that time she had a chest tube put into her left lung for a hole that showed up and fluid retention.
794335 tn?1238037723 However, I have had chemo twice in the past 2 years, and lost 2 cats so far, do I really need to worry about my cats and the chemotherapy? Plus my older cat also fights with my sons younger ones, constantly jumping them and biting them. Is this what may be giving my oldest cat behavior problems with the other 2 cats?
Avatar f tn My 9 yr old cat suddenly has a difference in the size of his pupils. He is eating and acting ok so far. I have noticed alot of twitching in his tail when he is resting. Anyone else experienced this?
775732 tn?1246125144 These conditions are more likely in cats that are over 7 yrs old. Both of these conditions are very treatable and your kitty should be fine!
Avatar n tn You can even add some salmon oil to the pumpkin to add fish flavor, since cats usually love fish flavor. Also, Physillium Husk, in powder, added to the food can do wonders. It is a fiber product and it is safe to give it to the cats. When my cats get a little constipated I just add this and problem solved. Omega is primarily for skin and coat. My cats are given Omega every day yet they tend to get a bit constipated when I get lazy and don't give them physillium husk. But.....
Avatar n tn Off the top of my head I would suggest that the first issue could be the beginnings of arthritis, which is very common in elderly cats. Sometimes they just sort of slow down. There is also a lesser possiblility of osteoporosis. Your vet should at least be able to treat the symptoms, to some degree. And you may have to cater to her a little bit, lift her up to where she wants to go, that sort of thing. This sounds like you could be dealing with a bladder/ urinary tract infection.
