Depo provera and leg pain

Common Questions and Answers about Depo provera and leg pain

depo-provera

I am a 21 year old female, and been having the depo injection every three months since May 2012. I have been having headaches and joint pain since then, and its driving me insane. The leg pain gets so bad that I can't sleep at night, have to get my boyfriend to rub my knees to ease the pain off, and lately its been in both knees not just the left. It sometimes comes from my hip right down to my ankle and its annoying me.
I'm 17, and recently became sexually active. I decided to go on depo to protect myself from pregnancy. I got it on Nov 4 2011, I experienced no symptoms until Dec 6 2011. I started spotting, at first it didn't even require a pad or tampon. It gradually increased and stopped occasionaly for a day or two, I gained 10 pounds and started getting horrible headaches, right leg pains, loss of appetite, painful intercourse(before the bleeding), and mood swings. Now the blood is regular period blood.
(I'm 25 now, 23 at the depo time) I gained 50 pounds, had terrible mood swings, depression, bone loss, fatigue and some minor other problems. I suffer from knee/joint pain now because depo causes you to loose calcium in your bones. If you choose to go with it, make sure you start a calcuim supplament right away. I honestly would suggest researching into any drug before you commit to it. Some people I know have had really good luck with it.
As for the leg pain and the sex pain these are not common and you should really get it checked asap. Some people have blood clots form when using certain birth control medications.
You girls have to discontinue Depo Provera at once and I highly recommend never putting any hormones into your bodies ever again. I have experienced a living nightmare from Depo Prover for the past three years. After I got the Depo shot I went home and researched on the web about the drug. I cried for three hours in fear that that could happen to me. What happened was worse. Five days after the shot a menstrual cycle started that would not cease. It wasn't a normal cycle.
I did some research and realized that every issue I was having was related to the Depo shot. From leg cramps, blurry vision, anxiety, panic attacks, and just a loss of interest in many things I once loved. I made an appointment with another gyno in the same practice my regular gyno was in and she confirmed that all these symptons are common to the shot! I never would have gone on it, knowing it causes all these stomach problems because I have a sensative stomach to begin with.
here is my web site and depo group web address. please feel free to take a look and ask me questions!!! love...kimmie http://health.groups.yahoo.
But everyone is different and reacts differently to depo. Some people even get pregnant while on depo or once they stop it. Usually it stays in your system from 12-18 months. I stopped depo in Nov 04 and started BCP's to regualte my periods. Then in Aug 05 I stopped BCP's to TTC. Because the depo was still in my system and I just got of BCP's I didnt have a period without the help of provera until Dec 05. I now am almost 21 weeks pregnant.
I was given muscle relaxers and tramadol but it didn't help much. Pain is now constant and sharper. Pain is radiating to the base of my skull causing migraine type headache on left side.. Also my right leg and foot feels like pins and needles, mostly inner thigh and inner foot to big toe. As a kid, I was told I had scoliosis but never did anything about it (it runs in my family). Also, I've been taking depo provera shots for about 7 years. I am 46 years old.
There was continuous steady pain in the right side of my uterus the whole time it was in and the pain intensified with sex and any lifting. I could not lay on my right side at all or it would be more painful. I gained 17 lbs in the first month of getting the Marina and still more yet a couple months after. The severe anger tendency did not reduce and my relationship was in jeopardy. I got it removed and jumped right back to the Depo again and got two more injections.
I know that taking the pill and not taking the reminder pills, just going straight into another a pack without using the non-hormone pills will make your period stop as well. I've done it that way but pills give me leg cramps and Depo does not so I went back to Depo.
I only use tampons a few times a year because I have been taking Depo-Provera shots for four years. Are these things (scar issues and the leg pain) related? What could trigger this sort of thing? I am 23 years old and I have no medical insurance. Any thoughts on this subject could really save me time and money when I see the doctor!!
no EXAUSTED all the time (I'm normally a very active person) and sleeping as much as 12 hours a night, some mild leg cramping and pain in underarms (not so much in the breasts). And now my normally flat stomach is definitely starting to bulge just a little bit. Not to mention the headaches...I've even missed work twice because of them! The "am I pregnant" quizes that I've found have all said that they are 99% sure that I am pregnant, but with negative pregnancy test results still...
I did have an issue like this when I was a teenager, had a lot going on back then and had leg and hip pain and had convinced myself then that it was cancer. After all kinds of xrays they found nothing and that is when they figured out it was anxiety related. So I am hoping that it is nothing major, maybe it is a muscle? I am just so worried, I am going to a breast specialist in 2 days and am freaking out. It does seem odd how we all have anxiety issues....
I came home took some panadol and tryed to not think about the pain. The pain became so back I could not stand up and was throwing up. I rang my doctor and he said wait for laparoscopy. It feels like some one is stabing me in the lower right abdo, I explain to doctor that, how's about I come round and show him what this feels like. One, what is wrong with these doctor, why don't they listen and two should I be concerned.
It started about 2 yrs ago before my hysterctomy in which they removed my uterus and left ovary( I had a soft ball size growth on the left ovary) I went to my GYN for the yearly check up( a year after my surgery)and to have my utlasound to see it I had another growth on my right ovary but he found nothing. He did however say it might be scar tissue and also gave me a depo-provera shot to see if that helped.
I was not to active for about 2 months and after I got better and started moving around more again the pain has gottin worse in my abdomen and leg. The pain is worse when I sit. But better when I walk or lay down. I hope you can give me some advice because I'm not even sure which doctor I should see for this problem.
I got a Mirena IUD and thought it was the answer to my prayers. For a year and a half, I had no period and no pain, no hormone trouble either. In April 2009, I started having sharp pains in the right side of my sacrum. It was on and off at first, and then became chronic. I haven't been completely without pain (except for when on heavy pain meds) for a year now.
I developed a blood clot post operatively in my leg and was also on bc pills which I had to stop. Another gyn had put me on depo-provera (which I guess was a no-no) and from what I was told that once you've developed a clot your likely to get them again and that's what happened.

Then, Dec12 I got some pretty uncomfortable cramping in my lower abdomen, and hasnt stopped for 3 days. The pain is mild/moderate and sometimes seems to radiate to my lower back and down my thighs. I went to the ER twice in the past two days. The forst one said maybe its a side effect from stopping the pill, and the second did bloodwork and urinalysis and all was normal. Tomorrow Im scheduled for an ultrasound of my lower abdomen to check for ovarian cysts. I am scared.
brown periods lasting a week, leg weakness(feels like growing pains), cramping, sharp abdominal pain on and off, hot and cold sweats. I took the depo provera shot the beginning of January and didn't have my period for four months. When I finally got my period it lasted exactly two weeks, started out being all brown blood and continued into regular blood. Through out the time I have had the worst sharp pains bringing me to my knees because it hurt so bad but only for a few seconds.
It actually constipated me for the first few days and gave me heartburn and chest pain. I don't know if that is normal or not. My doctor says I am insulin resistant and he thinks this will help me loss weight. Should I ask to increase it? Or is it to soon?
I have been doing some research in my spare time, and have found out that long-term pain can be imprinted on the brain for ever. I used to have pain down my good leg, and didn't understand it, but this theory proves what was happening. Although I know the "new school of thought" is leaning toward..physician education, and long-term maintenance under responsible care w/ opiates for chronic intractable pain, I still haven't found a doctor yet.
By any chance are you on depo provera? My thyroid levels have been out of whack the whole time I was on the depo shot, I had my last shot april 07 , and sept 4th was my 2nd normal tsh level , last may 06 it was (normal) but I still continured to feel like **** . I had been hypo for 13 yrs on .25 mcg of synthroid with no problem, then started the depo shot. Tsh level was way too low.

I gained so much weight so fast that I got big red stretch marks on my upper thighs around my panty line. My fatigue and aches have gotten a lot worse and I have right side neck pain and right side migraines behine my eyeball. I have also had some abdominal pain that was so bad that I went to two doctors to see what was wrong and one of them actually thought that it could be my pancreas.
