Coughing up salty phlegm

Common Questions and Answers about Coughing up salty phlegm

coughing

I have been getting over a recent bout of bronchitis where I was prescribed Augmentin (I am on Day 6) and Prednisone short burst (finished 2 days ago) I am still coughing quite bad but the fever has broke... but as of yesterday the phlegm/mucus I am coughing up tastes extremely salty. I have not been using any type of saline spray, or gargling with salt water, so I know this is not the reason. Is it the antibiotics causing this? Or is there another reason?
Apparently it worked because since that time- I've had had no reoccurance of Sinusitis (50 odd years Last night I tried the method and for the first time in two months I slept through the night without coughing nor expectorating phlegm ..and today, I've been phlegm free....the first time since Late October. I'll keep using the technique for a few days until I'm sure the problem has passed... If you don't find another thread response on this particular theme ..I'm either cured...or DEAD...
For the past two weeks I have had a persistent cough. I have been coughing up phlegm. The phlegm has become salty over the last few days. I do have a history of producing phlegm when i eat hot foods and always cough after meals. I am growing concerned that these symptoms may indicate I have a condition worse than a cold. I am run down at the moment, work long hours and feel tired but generally I feel healthy.
Apparently fluid can seep from the back of the nose and go down the throat the brain reacts to stop the fluid going into the lungs which closes the voice box, this then stops you breathing, the brain then realises that the lungs arent working so wakes you up and that is why you wake up coughing and trying to get your breath, this is how it was explained to me. I have been told that it is not dangerous and that I will always wake up, it is just very stressfull.
I get a sore throat (not tonsils but when you swallow) I now go straight on antibiotics and use Bricanyl inhaler although it doesnt seem to have much effect except to cause alot of mucus coughed up from the lungs. It causes me to have spasm coughing and if I cannot control this to 3 or 4 coughs my windpipe closes over making it hard to breath in or out. The last one about 2 years ago stopped me breathing in and out completely for 10 to 15 seconds and I thought I had bought it.
I'd have thought you be coughing a lot if you had exceess phlegm. Could it rather be from the digestive system - bile? When you 'cough it up' are you coughing from the lungs/throat or actually vomitting from the stomache/esophagus? i used to have a post nasal drip - excess respiritory mucous - when i got up I'd have a lot of coughing and that led to vomiting acid. I also had GERD which was fixed with a op to tighten the lower esophagal sphinchter (where it meets the stomache).
The congestion and sneezing have left, however, a sore throat and coughing persists. When I cough, I cough up clear and opaque phlegm. I tried taking Claratin and that seems to help a little. But I'm starting to think that this is beyond allergies and might be a bacterial infection?
Sometimes the only symtom of the asthma is a persistent cough. I usually get this wet cough when I llie down, and no sooner you cough up the wet phlegm, after a few seconds it's there again. This is asthma that is triggered off by some irritant (dust mites perhaps). I have never smoked only passively other people's smoke. I was diagnosed with asthma after the age of 40. The symtoms were persistent coughing that had would not go away after 3 bouts of influenza.
Sometimes, I get mucous in my throat and am always swallowing and it affects my speech and I try to clear it also the mucous or phlegm taste salty ( makes me think an infection). If you figure this out, I think a lot of people on the internet will be greatful ). If you need more info, let me know.

I HAVE BEEN TO DOCTORS and HOSPITALS. I HAVE BEEN GIVEN ANTIBOTICS, STERIODS, and BREATHING TREATMENTS. THE DOCTOR TOLD ME THE REASON FOR THE COUGH IS THAT I'AM WHEEZING and IT MAKES YOU COUGH.
Slowly bend forward as far as you can comfortably bend, and look between your legs at the crotch. Slowly stand up erect. Bend over and stand up again several more times to make sure, before you get in the shower. If you do get dizzy, see a doctor. You may have some blockage in your carotid arteries—the ones in your neck that provide blood to your brain. Figure out which direction you will be bending over in the shower. Preferably, it’s the side away from the shower head.
My first breath when I wake in the morning is almost always followed by coughing up a large amount of phlegm and saliva. A feeling of tightness/pressure under my breast bone is considerably relieved if I can force a good burp. An unaccountable salty taste periodically pervades the back of my mouth. I sometimes have a sporadic sharp pain in the lower throat but never a typical "sore throat".

I don't know about the problem with your vision, but I think if you have phlegm in your throat which you can't expel, it might be in the tosil area. If phlegm comes from your lower respiratory system, you should be able to cough up or expel it. Although you don't feel you have mucus flow down through your air way, it still does. If you feel something in back throat and can't expel it, phlegm might come from mucus from upper sinus or from back throat. If it's clear, it's not infected.

Then, as though it were ready to reproduce, it moved into my upper chest, and I was coughing it up all over the place. That, though, was normal mucus and snot... This is totally different - WATERY and YELLOW AS A CRAYON! It got onto my white business shirt, and I had to bleach it! Could this just be the final-letting-loose of my infection from earlier? Or is it something more serious coming on??
I first noticed I would cough when I spoke to my mother on the phone then it seemed to progress to coughing in the morning to coughing after meals and bowel movements. I experienced bouts of constipation were I felt bloated and a little nauseous after bowel movements. At times, I would experience anxiety while trying having a bowel movement and I would not be able to bear down and push my stool out.
I think you should go see a doctor. Coughing up blood sounds very scary to me. The only time I ever coughed up blood, I had pneumonia and I was also a heavy smoker. I wouldn't fool around with something like that. You could have some kind of virus or infection going on. Let us know what happens.
It has been going on for a week and a half and I always feel dry and I have a lot of phlegm all day and the tongue colour goes up and down but always orange. From the posts it looks mostly like it must be to do with being on meds. We don't have many forest fires or the city pollution problems here! so I don't think it is that. I am worried tht it might be an indication of more so i will probably try my doc or dentist - maybe they have different ideas over here!
It might also be that since we have candida, there aren't that many good bacteria, and it might be that all we need is good bacteria to combat these gases that are being produced. So we can't up our good bacteria just by taking probiotics, we have to have the environment in which they can survive and grow, a candida infested intestine is the reason they won't grow. This is what I'm hoping anyway.
My doctor wants me to start Lexapro but he wants me to wait until Zoloft is completely washed from my system. How many days do I have to put up with this ****? Any answers or advise is much appreciated. You know the medical world tells us that you cant become dependant or addicted to these meds but I tend to dissagree the more I read about people having discontinuation syndrome after following doctors orders on a good weening off process.
Thank you very much for your response. I will definitely bring it up to my ENT when I see him. This is definitely a step in the right direction.
it doesn't have a distinctive smell but i assume its made from fruit acids. i end up seeing a fly or 2 in my room only when i bathe in it. I think you should try totally changing ur toiletries and switch to other anti-bacterial non fragrance brand to c if it makes a difference. worked wid me.
I go to the doctor next week for the blood work (beta), and hopefully I might be able to get an ultrasound done at the same time. Symptoms are showing up early with this pregnancy. I'm already looking pregnant from the bloating. and nausea is hitting me early too. We had a son 6 years ago. So this time around we're hoping it's a girl. It may be crazy, but we've already picked out a girl's name. Haven't come up with a boy's name yet.
