Coughing up dark phlegm

Common Questions and Answers about Coughing up dark phlegm

coughing

I have always coughed up brown flecks in my phlegm. But now, I have been coughing up dark grey after having some chronically infected teeth pulled. Could this be a result of the local anesthetic injections, or a worsening of the copd? I can only get rid of bronchitis for about a month before it comes back every time. Antibiotics (doxicycline) seem to have the inside of my mouth raw, with white patches on my tongue and a few white blisters in mouth, also. Now I'm on Penicillin for the teeth.
I've been expelling a white frothy substance from my lungs quite constantly from day one since I quit. However, today i'am coughing up something else. Its encased in the phlegm very small pebble like balls that are dark in color. A lot of it seems to be coming up. Is this a sign of COPD or something worse? And or is this normal for a person who has quit smoking, if so, when should I go get this checked out if it doesnt stop within the next 2-3 weeks?
Is it normal, or usual for a heavy marijuana smoker (numerous times daily for 6+ years), to be coughing up clear phlegm with dark gray/brown globular matter encased in it, mainly in the mornings and randomly in small amounts throughout the day? In the mornings there are much more dark pieces in clear phlegm, and when it randomly happens throughout the day, it is just small specks or chunks encased in clear phlegm.
Sometimes it brings up phlegm; other times not. We know she has allergies to ragweed, grass, weeds, flaxseed. Her food contains nothing that she's allergic to. I understand that her allergies may act up in the summer, but her coughing is year-round (we live where we have winter from Nov.-Mar. so the grasses are dead part of the year). They have diagnosed her with pneumonia and found a shady spot on her lung (our vet thinks this may be scar tissue from a previous bout of pneumonia).
I have been getting over a recent bout of bronchitis where I was prescribed Augmentin (I am on Day 6) and Prednisone short burst (finished 2 days ago) I am still coughing quite bad but the fever has broke... but as of yesterday the phlegm/mucus I am coughing up tastes extremely salty. I have not been using any type of saline spray, or gargling with salt water, so I know this is not the reason. Is it the antibiotics causing this? Or is there another reason?
If I dont hack up the phlegm I get ill to my stomach. I can feel the phlegm just sitting there, becoming a larger amount to spit out. I've never sought out any doctor over this matter. Thought it would help me to go online and find out if others have this problem. Many foods and drinks can irritate the problem. Sometimes I chew gum - it only cures the situation for a short time. And some gums don't work at all.
The next day, early morning, i started coughing again as soon as i woke up. This time, there was a little more blood. The day after, i still had the cough(phlegm) but without any blood. And now today, I suddenly woke up early morning around 6am and started coughing again. This time there was something like maybe a total of ten drops of fresh blood in my mucus. I quit smoking completely last weekend and since then i haven't touched a ciggarette. Why then is there blood in my mucus?
I was trying to post an answer to a question but couldn't figure out how. Anyway, for some time, I have had frequent coughing/gagging attacks, which almost always occur after eating. I have come to believe that it is a result of my throat becoming irritated while eating, often along with very small particles of food getting caught in my throat. This triggers mucus creation in my throat, which causes the problem.

Hello, From day before yesterday (October 5, 2011) morning I am coughing up dark Black Phlegm. This is the first time I am having it. I am non smoker. I have some Respiratory Disorders like asthma and sinusitis. I am suffering from both of them from long ago and taking medicine for both of them and I am alright. But after Black Phlegm I am really tensed. Can you please tell me why is this happening? Should I see a doctor? Is it a matter of tension? Thank you!
Apparently fluid can seep from the back of the nose and go down the throat the brain reacts to stop the fluid going into the lungs which closes the voice box, this then stops you breathing, the brain then realises that the lungs arent working so wakes you up and that is why you wake up coughing and trying to get your breath, this is how it was explained to me. I have been told that it is not dangerous and that I will always wake up, it is just very stressfull.
It's been over two years now since my last hit. About a year ago I started coughing up black phlegm, it's dark, not brown or red but black in clear phlegm. I can feel it comes deep from in my lungs, I had a chest X-ray and it showed some inflammation in one area but no growth. I realize that smoking all that for so long could have gotten a shitload of that gross resin in my kings but I figured by now it would have cleaned most of that out , I mean how long could this go on fore, forever?
I get a sore throat (not tonsils but when you swallow) I now go straight on antibiotics and use Bricanyl inhaler although it doesnt seem to have much effect except to cause alot of mucus coughed up from the lungs. It causes me to have spasm coughing and if I cannot control this to 3 or 4 coughs my windpipe closes over making it hard to breath in or out. The last one about 2 years ago stopped me breathing in and out completely for 10 to 15 seconds and I thought I had bought it.
But, a year or 2 ago tops, I started coughing up what seriously puzzled is talking about. I guess it is phlegm but it is an entirely different consistency from "regular phlegm." Yes, more like pellets or small more firm balls kind of, but they smell so incredibly foul it's absolutely disgusting. I usually examine them whenever they come up which has been kind of a lot lately, and it is just one of the most wrong smells ever.
I had this same thing happen for several years--I would eat just about any food, and within 5-10 minutes my throat would fill up with sticky phlegm, and I would choke, gag, hack, and cough for 20 minutes to a half hour, and often would cough until I would vomit. The coughing fits became worse over the years, and I had to stop eating breakfast because I choked and vomited so much from the hacking.
sound like your lungs are clearing and you may have bronco or asthma or something see your doctor some times when you stop smokeing this happen.
I have a very sore throat, I wake up in the morning feeling very dizzy and i am coughing up very dark, thick green phlegm is this normal?

Every morning, for probably the past year or two, I've been waking up and feeling very congested in my nose and throat. I end up hacking up brown phlegm to the point where I am gagging. My nostrils are filled with junk. After I get up, I start getting a headache in either my left or right temple area only. As the day goes on, I never hack up anymore phlegm, but I always am clearing my throat CONSTANTLY! Any advice? Thanks in advance!
i have no pain, no trouble breathing, no nasal discharge. when the cough begins i can feel and hear the phlegm ball. when i finally get the phlegm up it is cloudy, sometimes clear and sometimes a dark gray with a black dot. its almost hard, round. some are sesame seed size others are peanut size. each spasm comes with at least 10-15 phlegm balls. after the spasm i am fine. these episodes occur once in the morning, then around 4:00, and again before i go to bed.
I have COPD and am oxygen mostly at night but use it when really out of breath and tired. Today I started coughing up phlem with blood in it. What could be the problem? I had lung cancer 8 years ago but with 6 months of chemo & 3 months of radiation. Tumor gone. Any info on current problem appreciated.

My surgery was on the 23rd and ever since the 24th I have had all the symptoms of SOME kind of upper respiratory crud. I am coughing up a very thick, dark brown phlegm. I was wondering if anyone knew if this is something that is a side effect of the surgery. I have read a few things on the internet about people who had the same symptoms post-surgery. I very rarely have to use my inhaler...and I have been having to use that lately. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated!

When my sinuses are not congested, my nose is runny. My voice sounds like a cross between Marge Simpson and the Godfather. My left side is so sore,.
#2 I'm experiencing some kind if cold which just started affecting my chest yesterday and today has me coughing up dark green phlegm... Any advice ladies?
If he has pain in the chest and is coughing up colored phlegm, he might have bronchitis.
You probably have or had sinusitis. The infected mucus drains into the throat from your sinuses and makes you cough. dark green and brown phlegm usually indicates infection, light green means it's getting better.
