Common Questions and Answers about Coughing phlegm shortness breath

coughing

I have an unbelieable cough, shortness of breath, frothy white phlegm, can't talk without hacking, afraid I'm drouning. Does anyone know about this.
It takes a lot of coughing but usually I can get some phlegm to dislodge. My concern is that I don't seem to have any concerns with shortness of breath. When I go to the doctors my oxygen is always in the 98% range. Yet I always seem to have a crud in the middle of my chest... and worsens, say maybe 1-2 times per year. I have tried to take up running. The most is 3 miles.. so nothing big.
Doctors say im ashmatic which is fine but one thing they cannot explain is why I've coughing out phlegm non stop for the past two month. Its not bloody, but thick and green sometimes white and foam like. My chest also feels tight everytime i cough. I use the sprays and all but this problem is permanently there.
Sometimes in the afternoon or night, the phlegm is stringy and chokes me. There are some days that I cough up phlegm about every 5 minutes. The coughing can last from seconds to the point where I get tears in my eyes, gag, choke, and eventually throw up. My chest hurts from this, as well as my throat and I have a headache. Sometimes when I eat or drink, I start to gag and choke. I can not do anything but cough and clear my throat (sometimes I clear it every 2 or 3 minutes).
I had a slight cough, no phlegm and tickle in my throat. I had to sit or stand straight up in order to breath. Then I lost my voice for a week but I could breathe. After my voice came back I felt the cold coming on again, my nose ran for about a week this time.
For some their only symptom is a dry cough. What other symptoms do you have outside of shortness of breath? Most people with lung issues often have a cough, chest tightness, and wheezing is certainly common. If you question your asthma diagnosis, then did you did a "methacholine" challenge test? If you tested positive for this one, you have definitely asthma..
I noticed recently that when I lie down to sleep or nap I would cough and will experience shortness of breath but when I sit down or stand up, it stops. Sometimes it happens when I wake up instead. I would cough several times but no phlegm comes out. I have past cases of asthma and cocoa triggers it but I haven't taken anything with cocoa for a long time already and the last time I got an asthma attack was back in 2009.
About six weeks ago I started to experience periodic shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. At first I noticed it after working out (I run 4 days a week, both distance runs and interval training). Then I started waking up at 3 or 4 in the morning with shortness of breath. I'd have to stand up and cough up phlegm (clear) for about 30 minutes before being able to go back to sleep.
all air just escaped immediately on exhale) --was short of breath a lot but was a normal symptom of paralyzed vocal cord --Spring time came, felt asthma flaring, ended up on oral steroids (burst and taper) twice and responded VERY well while on the oral steroids --vocal cord surgery begining of June to place permanent implant, air wasting no longer an issue --given oral steroids after surgery to help with inflammation, again had GREAT response and all breathing problems stopped w/in 24 hours --n
For last 2 months, I get cough without phlegm everytime. Coughing starts anytime and even during sleep. Now days I am unable to eat much as I feel full very quickly and walking is initially tiring though after a while this improves. I take tablets; Low plate plus 75mg, xplanded 20mg, Spiromide 40mg, Advant 16mg, Dilatant 25mg. Also I have shortness of breath everytime I think seriously about something. Is it ordinary asthma or cardiac asthma?
A few days ago I randomly started having some shortness of breath that seemed to come about in episodes. They last anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours and during this time while I am able to breath, it feels sort of constricted or that I am unable to get a satisfying breath of air. I've never been diagnosed with asthma, but I do smoke cigarettes although I have severely cut down since this started happening 5 days ago.
Look at the anxiety its causing you now, imagine what this will be like when you are in your 30's and this happens. Or worse your cough and permanent shortness of breath continues because you have chronic bronchits or emphysema. I doubt if this isolated incident is anything to worry about but your smoking is something to worry about.
) again after any physical activity (like loading toddler and stroller in car, walking up any incline, cleaning house). The nebulizer seems to loosen things up (lots of phlegm comes up when I cough all spring) but it doesn't cure the SOB. Instead I actually wheeze AFTER a neb treatment. Shouldn't the Advair be keeping this at bay? Is this asthma or something else?
i take advair, which helps me breath better and allegry which helps control the phlem. i was wondering after meals was your dad having a shortness of breath to?well i feel a lot better after taking these meds.
I have been having a rusty or blood associated phlegm (sputum) for about 8 months. I don't cough at all. Such phlegm easily comes out after I wake up from sleeping. At other times, I have to summon (pull out phlegm) repeatedly and the blood assocoated or the rusty would show up in the fourth or fifth call. I have burning pain on my ribs to the right and left of what is called "infrasternal notch" (where gastritis pain is usually felt).
which i believe that i do have anxiety and panic disrder, HOWEVER i have been short of breathe for about two months.. I cant seem to finish deep breathes and yawns.. its like my lungs just fill up really quickly and i feel like im not getting enough oxygen but my oxygen levels are fine.. recently along with the "air hunger" I have had a lot of phlegm in my throat and when i try to clear it it feels like i cant.. and when i do get something up, its right there again instantly.
sx are tired, no energy, short of breath pain in chest. you will feel more energy. this will come over time. feel a little better each week.
About nine months ago, I became ill with asthma-related symptoms including very bad rhinitis, shortness of breath and even mild chest pain. Despite exhaustive testing and various medications, I am still unaware of what the cause is. I have subjected myself to several PFTs, exercise induced asthma tests, CT and x-ray(normal), methacholine tests, skin testing. I have been prescribed short doses of Prednisone, Advair, Albuterol, Singulair, and Flonase.
Large accumulations of fluid compromise breathing and may cause coughing, shortness of breath with rapid breathing (tachypnea), and cyanosis, and retractions. Prevention Early treatment of bacterial respiratory infections can prevent pleuritis changes. No treatments are available for viral respiratory infections with the exception of amantadine for influenza.
I can't laugh without having a coughing fit and can't remember that being different. I have constant aches and pains in my chest and shortness of breath. For about the last month whenever phlegm comes up there is blood in it. It ranges from quite a bit to just streaks. I know this sounds silly but i have a phobia of going to the doctors. I've convinced myself if i go she's just going to tell me i have lung cancer and i would rather not know that!!
I haven't really had to cough, but I have had to clear my throat sometimes. It also feels like I have to...it's not coughing it up, but get up somehow phlegm. I don't know how to describe how that happens lol. Tonight, I noticed that there are little blood flecks in it. I doubt that it's anything too terribly serious, as it's not a lot [at least, as of now], but I'm wondering if it's something to be concerned about and monitor?

it's been 2 weeks since then and my chestwall pain hasn't subsided, still coughing with phlegm, but no fever and sweats.the first phlegm i cough out in the morning is still rusty yellow and all through the day it's saliva and white thing together in the phlegm.please help me. If I have taken 2 weeks of antibiotics already why is there pain still when i breathe, sneeze or cough?now i couldnt tell if i still have shortness of breathe because i cant really breathe deep. When will the pain go away?
It is unlikely that the problem you are describing is coming from your lungs. With that type and amount of mucus in your lungs, you would be coughing and having significant breathing problems, particularly during the night. It is much more likely that this is from your upper airways, and probably the sinuses. It may or may not have anything to do with an infection.
>I tend to spit this up (usually don't have a cough, only sometimes and it's mild and short lived) mostly in the morning.< Need to clarify: mostly in the morning but this still comes up some throughout the day. Just that the heaviest of it comes before noon.
What I am experiencing now is a constant irritated throat, followed by episodes of throat clearing with some shortness of breath which the inhalers do bring good relief. I always feel as if there is a lump in the throat, but it seems to have been this way for years. I was reading about how post-nasal drip could be a culprit however my passages are usually clear. I have started taking Benadryl each night to see if it will help.So far I can't detect if it does.
I have had cartarrh and phlegm for a good number of years and have an irritating cough when the phlegm builds up too much. The cough starts with a tickle and then It sounds like I smoke 60 a day! The cough rattles around and is keeping me awake more than it used to. I have tried Beconase spray, an inhaler which didn't work very well and catarrh remedies but nothing seems to work. I also suffer from Rhinitis and sore throat during the Spring/Summer months.
Hi Tiffany12090, Welcome to MedHelp The main tests would be Chest X-ray, Complete blood count, sputum culture (phlegm), and physical exam. It could be mycoplasma pneumonia, virus, or even fungal. If they didn't identify the exact pathogen you may have got the wrong treatment. I don't now what non infectous process could cause this except reactive airway to the cigarettes. If you don't have health insurance, the biggest bang for your buck would be the sputum culture.
