Coughing green phlegm in the morning

Common Questions and Answers about Coughing green phlegm in the morning

coughing

It sort of comes and goes. I cough fairly regularly producing phlegm - one morning it can be green and thick and my chest feels congested and the next it's more white phlegm and I feel more normal. What's up? In the past I would get a sinus infection, take my antibiotics and it clears. I have avoided the treatment but maybe I should do it anyway as a precaution. Is that wise?
For the last few months I have been coughing up thick green phlegm everyday (sometimes it feels like there is some kind of matter inside of it-ew). It is usually mostly in the mornings, but I continue to have problems with drainage throughout the day. I am a vocal music student and my voice teacher suggested that I see an ENT. I dont have athsma, and have no known allergies; and other than the drainage I feel great. What could possibly be causing this and what can I do to treat it? Thank you!
I have been to my doctor and have been given antibiotics and they appear to have stopped the blood and the green and brown stuff but not the cough. This cough has been going on for years and sometimes I cough out and I cough out and I cough out and out and out and cannot get any air in cos I am coughing out so much I think I am going to pass out???

was wondering if anyone knows why I would have blood in my phlegm. When I wake up in the morning, I always cough up a lot of phlem but have noticed in the past few months, I also have experienced some blood in my phlem & also when I blow my nose. I also have some green phlegm that I cough up. I brought it to my ENT doctor's attention & he had no idea why I had blood in my phlegm. I was reading on the internet that its possibly due to infection.
I went to bed last night with a lot of phlegm in my throat and woke up this morning with a lot of soreness and phlegm once again. I tried to hack up the phlegm. Most of it was clear or yellow. Then I managed to get a real good one... I hacked up a real thick sample that was directly from my throat, and spit it out onto a tissue. I noticed a streak of blood on the tissue mixed with yellow phlegm. I continued to try to bring phlegm up, and didn’t notice the blood anymore.
It all started with a seasonal cough which brought up very thick green phlegm. The cough cleared up but the production of phlegm has not ceased. Especially but not limited to the mornings I clear my throat and I bring up very think and sticky greeny-brown phlegm, consistency would be twice as thick as wallpaper paste. I have been a smoker but not for the last 9 months and I never had a problem with phlegm before this cough two years ago.
for the last year or so i have had what seems like a permanent drip at the back of my throat and light greenish, thick phlegm in the morning. what is really distrubing is occasionally (twice in past 4 months) i find a round, longish dark green/black hard piece of...phegm? in my mouth. i don't cough it up, so i assume it is coming from the sinus and not the lungs. there is no bad smell. otherwise i haven't been sick in ages. i am 28, female, very active, very healthy non-smoker.
n sometimes in the morning..the phlegm is light green..i had taken claritin as i thought it was caused by allergy..but claritin did not improve my condition..and now i have blocked nose..please help..
blowing my nose the tissue is filled with bright orange phlegm, I have had a cold and phlegmy cough for 2 weeks now and the phlegm side just is not getting better and now is a bright orange colour?
I had a severe cold recently and while my cold is getting better, my cough is getting worse. I cough up a thick clear phlegm, and sometimes the coughing causes me to vomit just as you described. I have started spitting it out so that I don't swallow it back, but I still end up vomitting after awhile. I don't know exactly whats wrong, but I'm really not enjoying this even after a few days. (So your comment about 10 months scares me quite a bit.
If you have any other signs of an infection - fever, headache, yellow/green phlegm...- you should go to the clinic for antibiotic. I hope this helps you.
She has been to the vet twice in the past 3 weeks for coughing up phlegm (white and some green) she coughs worse in the mornings, even just running down the hall or when she gets excited. Some days are worse than others sometimes she doesn't even need a reason to cough. She was put on 10 days of doxycyclin now she is one amoxocilin and has been for 3 days now.
mostly in the morning but this still comes up some throughout the day. Just that the heaviest of it comes before noon.
I wake up every morning with a throat full of green and brown flem. It just started about 1 month ago. I have to get it all out because if I don't it will bother me the entire day. However, it does irritate my throat for a couple of hours. Please consider that I am a 20yo female that has never smoked and drinks once or twice a year. I also do not have any medical conditions that I know of. I do have allergy and sinus but they have not been serious latley.
Hi, back in mid-April I got a nasty cold after staying in a New Jersey hotel room for 2 days. I had fever of like 101-102, plus cough, yellow-green phlegm and runny nose. However I got better after 2-3 days, so I never saw a doctor or took any pills besides Tylenol for symptoms. The problem is, a dry cough has stayed with me ever since this cold. It's an unproductive cough, usually it's like a single cough after talking a lot. If I don't talk much I hardly ever cough.
Always have it first thing in the morning and usually I have a mild sore throat when waking which is relieved quickly when phlegm has been expelled. The phlegm colour ranges from clear to green to these days being brown. A good lot of the time it is hardened. Have had blood spots in it in the past but seldom. I generally feel well, just tired. Don't often get colds. This discussion is related to <a href='http://www.medhelp.org/posts/show/283694'>EXCESSIVE PHELGM AND COUGHING?????
I had an allergic reaction to amoxcillin a few weeks ago and have generally been unwell since, this cough came from no where, did not have a cold but did have sore throat, in the morning and through the night is worse, coughing up green phlegm and being sick eventually, i even resorted to using my sons inhaler as wheezy and chest seems highly irritated all the time, extremely lethargic and having high temp normally at night, i am totally fed up and i do feel unwell, i cant sleep well and i have
Same as you, it started dry and then progressed to bringing up phlegm. The phlegm is yellowish-green. I went to see my doctor about 2 weeks ago. He gave me an anti-biotic for a sinus infection (which is what almost everyone I know is being diagnosed with). Needless to say, I have finished my 10 day track of anti-biotics and I am still coughing! Guess that wasn't the right diagnosis. Anyways, just watch out for Pneumonia.
12 for a repaired mitral valve that we were told was ripped. from the day after surgery she has been coughing. In the morning it is yellowish/green and then through the day it is clear. The coughing can be severe at times that it limits her ability to speak. Has anyone experienced this? She has had several chest xrays and they have been clear. She did have pneumonia one week after surgery and was hospitalized for another week. Any suggestions/ideas?
coughs were dry and caused chest pains and breathing difficulties. Eventually would produce slight phlegm, but was always be unable to cough it up. After going to the emergency after a coughing fit, I was told my lungs were fine, however, I could have whooping cough with an asthmatic component. Given a puffer, prescribed an antibiotic, and told me that if the coughing persisted after 3 days of taking the antiobiotic, to see my family doctor.
I wake up in the morning feeling fine, but as the day goes on I start coughing up a thick green and/or yellow phlegm. It seems to get worse when I eat. I saw a pulmonologist who thought I may have asthma, so I was placed on Advair and prednisone which didn't seem to help. I had a CT scan of my chest which was normal. A CT of my sinuses was abnormal with deviated septum and sinusitus under my right eye.
In the morning my phlegm seems to have color, sometimes greenish, sometimes brownish. There's no cough, just a feeling at the back of my throat that I need to clear. Sometimes there's a little streak of blood in it, but usually it's just clumpy green or brown.
MY 9 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER HAS BEEN SUFFERING FROM EXCESSIVE PHLEGM AND COUGHING FOR MONTHS NOW,SHE HAD HER TONCILS AND ADNOIDS OUT LAST JULY,SEEMS LIKE AFTER THAT ALL THIS BEGAN A FEW MONTHS AFTER,SHE HAS A LITTLE BIT OF ASTHMA BUT I JUST THINK THAT IS THE PROBLEM,A ENT DONE A CT SCAN AND SAID SHE HAD A POLYOP/CIST IN HER LEFT SINUS CAVITY BUT NOT TO WORRY BUT EVERYTHING IVE READ SAYS THAT COULD CAUSE REACCURRING SINUS INFECTIONS,IN DEC,SHE WAS IN THE HOSPITAL FOR DEHYDRATION,SHE COUGHED SO HARD AN
That helped the congestion a bit, but the cough didn't go away. Then I was given a zpack which lessened the cough, but I still have the cough. The cough is very light to nonexistent during the day, it really picks up at night. It has been this way the entire time. The cough is quite productive and lots of phlegm is present in my throat. What should I do at this point?
The fever went off in 3-4 days but i still had runny nose later resulted in Sinus. a week ago i had green phlegm with some blood in that. So i rushed to hospital and had a chest xray. prior to that the nurse and doctor at hospital checked my chest and said its a viral infection. But after observing my chest xray, i have been advised that i have caught a mild secondary infection so i was put on Augmentin 375 mg coruse for 7 days. today i have finsiehd teh course.
Starts with mild constriction and a tickle at the base of my throat, and gradually turns into a build up of phlegm. I rarely cough up anything substantial, usually just something very small, cloudy colour and sticky. I have red spots at the back of my throat (pharangytis from phlegm). Here is the order of diagnosis I've had so far: - Asthma dx by MD (2001 - non-steriod inhaler - I consider a false diagnosis!..
Later if i made myself cough/spat up some pale yellow-green phlegm , smallish amounts. I have a burning feeling behind the sternum . Tonight it also feels deeper going through to my back. Have seen 3 doctors, am on my 2nd dose of antibiotics and now a nasal spray for 'nasal drip' latest diagnosis. Have also just had chest X-ray (awaiting results).
