They would specifically have to diagnose bipolar disorder and see that a mood stabilizer was warranted to treat it first. Ask them what specific mood disorder they diagnosed him with. However although Risperdal is an antipsychotic it is FDA approved as a mood stabilizer as well so it should be helping with this.
I am on Clonidine which is used experimentally for bipolar and though it has a fair amount of side effects it does work. And there are more options as well. I post about the ones I know about. You need a concrete diagnosis as to what mood disorder you have and from there if you've tried known medications and need to try lesser known (but FDA approved for other purposes) mood stabilizers, I'd suggest your psychiatrist refer you to a mood disorders specialist.
Also have congestive heart failure, mitral valve disorder, etc. and the heart doc had prescribed Clonidine as one of the meds. Taking Clonidine made me feel most nearly what I imagine "normal" would feel like....really dampened the paranoia, but also caused sleepiness so heavy couldn't really function. Then heart-doc stopped the Clonidine because he said it was "mildly addictive." Please. Feeling "normal" was mildly addictive.
I read that Its 50/50. Depends though, I know ppl that are bipolar and have three kids, one has mood disorder. I'm bipolar, so is my husband and were having a baby in Nov. So I'm curious to see how this will work out. Either way what better people to help a child or someone deal with it then someone who actually has it themselves.
I have Bipolar 2 , PTSD , Panic Disorder and have Borderline Personality Disorder . I have more depression than mania. I was on Depakote 1000 mg a day . I felt pretty good but gained so much weight , which caused me to have prediabetes .I was changed to Lamictal which caused huge allergic reactions ! I just started Trileptal 300 mg twice a day. It's causing anxiety , but I also take Ativan . I seem to have more energy .
I feel like I'm having a mind seizure sometimes. We still have very little knowledge of the mind and brain, though we are learning more and more. We don't really know why bipolar meds work, there are theories, but no hard science. I find addiction and bipolar to be more similar than seizures and bipolar.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I read your post and it doesn't sound like a good time to jump as it is Christmas Eve. But if you have no pills, then that's it. So, I agree with Mary above, my Dr. prescribed Clonidine for me, and it really helped with the w/d's. Plus the Thomas recipe and I swear by Epsom salt baths for the rls. I know it's hard to get in touch with any Dr. at this time of year, but try anyway. Yours might be working, and ask him what to do.
