Augmentin and probiotics

Common Questions and Answers about Augmentin and probiotics

augmentin

I was on tons of antibiotics (2000 mg of augmentin!) for my sinus infections several times in the first year and a half following my TT. It didn't seem to affect my thyroid levels in the least. But, I took the antibiotics about an hour after my Synthroid. Hope you feel better.
Was your other antibiotic in the same class? Perhaps you could get a penicillin type antibiotic like augmentin. My older child has had frequent and very persistent sinus infections, and they routinely give prednisone and nasal steroid sprays in addition to antibiotics. They still can go on for months. From anecdotal evidence on the web, I would not entirely rule out chronic sinus infection as either a driver or exacerbator of your anxiety. Who are you seeing for the sinus infection?
was eventually determined to be a staph infection. Was put on Augmentin and referred to a gastroenterologist. Took forever to get in and then it was to the nurse practitioner. The soonest they can get me in for a colonoscopy and upper endoscopy is January 18. Last Friday a new symptom appeared. A clear, sometimes tinted yellow liquid discharge. I constantly feel like I have to go the bathroom, but most of the time it's just a teaspoon at most of this liquid that comes out.
I visit the urgent care centre, and they prescribe me with 3x daily 625mg Augmentin for 7 days. I'm 3 days into the augmentin, and it looks like the bv is back. And yes, I regularly get tested for STD/STIs. My last test had results back about 10 days ago and everything was clear. A few quetions: 1. Will the Augmentin help with the bv or do I need to get something for that again? 2. Will taking probiotics with Augmentin be a waste of time?
My hair fell out in handfuls and it was awful. Long story short - amoxicillin and/or augmentin both worked wonders when the tetracyclines didn't do anything but harm. My hair shedding lessened within a week and is actually starting to grow back and in 10 days my skin was almost completely clear. Doctors NEVER want to admit when they may have made a mistake or when a different drug might help more, but it was a miracle for me. I hope my misery can help somebody.
(rib and peg) Had severe sides-recommended by liver specialist to NOT do txt again-until something oral comes along.I have had and have now, cryoglobulenemia, neuropathy (numbness and spasms in legs, feet and hands, body aches and fatigue. I deal by eating vegetarian (no dairy or any meat except maybe fish only), organic as much as possible yoga type exercise.
Should I discontinue taking the Augmentin? Would probiotics be a wise intervention at this point?
That is the Prozac, the Riba, and the Augmentin. Usually I would space them all out a bit but I just wanted to get them down and get on with the day. I managed to get to work (it's only 15 minutes down the motorway thank goodness) and as soon as I arrived I had to lie on the office couch (not a good look for an HOD) and then had to revisit the toilet several times until it became apparent I needed to go back home.
I was fine while on the medicine, but two days after I went off I started having diarrhea and/or loose/soft stools. This has lasted for 8 weeks now and so far I've not gotten any answers from the doc. They've put me on probiotics, which I've taken faithfully, to no avail. I went on a bland diet, that didn't help either. They tested me for C Diff and parasites, both negative. Any ideas?
I have a similar condition that has taken me YEARS to properly diagnose-- on my own (doctors were clueless)! It is most likely LB or CV and requires a 7 day treatment with Augmentin 500 mg or bicarbonate sitz baths. Hopefully this site will clarify things for you. http://www.ispub.com/ostia/index.php?xmlFilePath=journals/ijanp/vol6n1/vaginosis.
I took the antibiotic which seemed to clear up what I thought was a sinus infection but I still wasn't feeling better and my glands were very swollen (they still are too a degree). The doctor prescribed Augmentin due to the remaining swollen glands and remaining flu like symptoms. On April 16th, I had tingling in my hands and feelings of pure exhaustion. My blood pressure was lower than normal (for me) and I felt somewhat light headed.
Yes Augmentin can be too strong and actually kills the good bacteria along with the bad. I would suggest any time you take an antibiotic, you should take a probiotic as well. This will replenish the good bacteria which will reduce the chanes of getting a yeast infection. There are specific probiotics for vaginal health. Anytime I'm prescribe a strong antibiotic I go ahead and ask for a prescription of Diflucan. I hope you find relief soon!
I got sick of it so I went to the doctor who checked my ears and said that it did look sore in there and perhaps I had an infection so they prescribed a low dose of amoxicillin. I took about 1/3 of the dose and stopped because the symptoms went away. I didnt like the side effects (bad stomach) so I stopped taking it since the vibrating had stopped. The vibrating came back though after a few days, and it became a constant sense of vibrating.
it was back and this time it went straight to dry inflamed mode. Augmentin did not help. In fact from all the augmentin I got yeast and/or BV. I was given flagyl which worked for 2 weeks then it all came back with a vengeance. I didn't just have vaginal inflammation but ulcerated sores in my rectum as well. I'm still suffering from that as medications didn't make it completely go away.
I went back in and he gave me a three month antibiotic called augmentin.. So i changed my diet and started taking the medication.. I stopped eating red meat, no sugar, and low- carbs. Really low carbs.. The medicine started giving me bad side effcts, like stomach pain, head burning, joint pain, bad gas, stay bloated.. severe stomach cramping. So i stopped taking the medicine.. And then the stomach problems got worser..
I don't believe it is related to eating in anyway since eating has no effect and it is around day and night. A few months ago I was on Augmentin for 21 days for possible mastoid/ear infection (which cleared right up). I also had a stool workup (For c. difficile(?)) What could cause such a sudden onset of mild nausea (no vomiting) seemingly unrelated to eating. Could it be related to the Augmentin which I stopped about 8 weeks ago?

I had been on a long course of antibiotics for chronic sinus infections and had taken Tequin, Augmentin and Biaxin sequentially for about 4 months. Since this episode, I have been unable to take any antibiotics orally or any other drugs except the very mildest (Sudafed, chewable acetamenaphin, Clarinex). Many foods provoke a similar response. The foods that trigger the pain include tomatoes, most raw vegetables, most fruits, chocolate and of course any form of alcohol.
Then about 2 days passed and it seemed to turn into a full blown common cold for about a week and half. I was constantly tired and worn out. I woke up one morning and my neck was so stiff and painful to move that I finally made a doctors appt. Went in and she gave me one dose of 2000 mg of zythromax (sp?) and steroid pills to take. My stomach was killing me about 3 hours after taking my meds. Started having diarrhea but only for that night.
Healthy and More diet than usual, Because this antibiotic will kill normal healthy bacteria as well. So Good diet is very important. Take Probiotics and avoid excessive milk. 7. Remember to take good multivitamin or Garlic/Cranberry Capsules or supplements.
She tried treating me with high powered probiotics first but then after 4 months she tested me again and I was still positive. I have not started taking the Flagyl yet. She had first prescribed the vanomycin but it was so expensive and the pharmacy would have to special order it. So i had her switch to Flagyl. I called a gastreonolist office today that I had seen for some other problems years ago, they are suppose to call me back tomorrow about testing me at their office.
My internist acted liked the UTI was no deal but she prescribed a week dose of Augmentin twice a day. My stomach was really rumbly all week and the nausea/vomiting kicked in last evening. Hope this all starts to even out and I begin to feel more energetic. Thanks for all your advise.
The thing is, once I stopped taking probiotics my stomach began to hurt again- and this time the probiotics didn't help me with the pain... it took another course of antibiotics and then starting on the probiotics again. Ask your doctor about the possibilty of bad bacteria overgrowth in your gut from all the antibiotics and ask him about potentially putting you on a different antibiotic (to kill the bacteria) followed by probiotics (to prevent a bad bacteria ovwergrowth again).
This hasn't gone away and has only improved about 30% since taking probiotics and eating a lot of fermented foods and coconut yogurt with live cultures. The Kevita probiotic drinks help the most. I have a 'lazy colon' and it's usually challenging to get the urge to have a bowel movement but now it's even worse! I have to basically push it all out, which never works well. I wake up several times a night in discomfort due to the bloating and 'tight' feeling in my abdomen and belly.
I then proceeded to the antibiotic regimen. First was Augmentin which did nothing then Rifaxim and that did nothing also. The follow up breath tests showed no reduction in CH4 levels, which are very high. The good news is that I feel fine and really function quite well. Bowel movements are on the soft side, but are formed. I very gradually seemed to to improve slowly, but I really want to know if there is a way or another antibiotic out there to eradicate this problem more quickly.
I have been to about 30 doctors- including ENT's allergists, neurologists, chiropracters, opthamologists. psychologists, dentists and everything else u can think of. All CT scans, MRI of brain and blood work keep coming back clean and ok. Nothing I try seems to work. There was a period of time about 3 and a half years ago that the symptoms lifted for about 4 months and then it returned full force.
After he spoke with my infectious disease doctor and my regular doctor, I was put on Levaquin and Augmentin. Because of the previous bad experience with Augmentin, I tried the Levaquin first. I felt better within 6 hours. I started the Augmentin the next day, and felt no major improvement, but have remained on both for 6 days now.
My 17 month old DD was diagnosed with strep throat on Friday (I know it is extremely rare for her age, but she had a positive test). Anyway, she is taking Augmentin and has diarrhea. It is not really that bad, but it has made her bottom so raw. I feel terrible for her. She is basically blistered and screams when I go to change her. I am using Butt Cream and Desitin, but they don't seem to be helping much. Is there something else that might help more?
Probiotics can be taken with anything. It is not really a medicine . It is only good bacteria like eating yogurt. The probiotics will cause some gas for a while until you get used to them. Did your dr precibe the fluconazole pills? These can be taken with probiotics also. Your dr would need to determine dosage but the nystatin is easier on your system so this is the one I would try first.
Prior to all of this I had been treated with antibiotics (at different times floxin, levofloxacin, doxycycline, augmentin, azithromycin), diflucan, and nystatin on and off for a year or so, to treat non-specific prostatitis (no agent was detected). I had stopped antibiotics in September, and my stools were a little loose. Diflucan was for possible yeast infection in prostate; nystatin to prevent yeast overgrowth after antibiotic treatment.
