Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir and early pregnancy

famvir

Avatar n tn I started suppressive therapy with Acyclovir early Dec. 08 and have not had my period since. Is this normal?
Avatar f tn I was told I had genital herpes 3 days ago. The outbreak started about 6 days ago. This is the first outbreak and it's extremely painful. The Dr gave me Acyclovir to take for 7 days. How long will it take for it to stop hurting? How long will it take for the Acyclovir to work?
Avatar m tn My daughter has been HSV2 positive for appx three years but has not had any outbreaks since the first year. She is in her last five weeks of pregnancy and her doctor has prescribed acyclovir 400mg once a day. My understanding has been that acyclovir is a twice a day medication. Is the medication going to benefit her at this dosage or does it need to be changed? Thank you!
Avatar f tn should you have obvious lesions the week before you are due or when you are in labor, a C section will be performed. You can take acyclovir or valtrex for the last month of pregnancy in the pregnancy doses if you are interested in order to increase the odds of not having an obvious lesion present close to delivery. if the "trauma" of a traumatic birthing or an episiotomy triggered a recurrence, it would happen after the baby was born so it wouldn't be an issue.
Avatar m tn But, recently they have been more and more frequent. I used the 200mg acyclovir at times when I felt I was getting an OB and it worked very well. Although, there have been times, once or twice, when it did not work and I experienced the worst OB's I've ever had. I have a pretty bad one now (ran out of meds) and I went to the Dr. yesterday and he said with the more frequent OB's he was going to prescribe me 400mg acyclovir to take twice daily for suppression.
Avatar m tn My daughter was diagnosed with Behcet's in 2008. Then in 2009 she contracted herpes (hsv2). She is now having an outbreak of herpes (starting to get under control after 2 rounds of valtrex, back on acyclovir for 2 days) and a flare of Behcet's. Prednisone will make the painful vaginal Behcet's lesions go away but will cause another outbreak of herpes. Does anyone have any suggestions? She's about to leave for a required college trip. Thanks.
Avatar f tn Welcome to the forum. I'll try to help. There are two reasons for anti-herpes therapy the last 3-4 weeks of pregnancy in women with histories of genital herpes. First is to prevent a recurrent outbreak that would increase the chance of HSV transmission to the baby and would force an otherwise unnecessary cesarean section. The second is to lower the chance of transmission of HSV to the baby.
Avatar f tn My doctor was referring to a study wehre Acyclovir slowed disease progression in HIV by reducing viral load. And so he thought Acyclovir might have a direct effect (even if it is low) on HIV. Maybe he thought that by decreasing viral load antybodies would show up later than in the absence of Acyclovir?
Avatar n tn Once and awhile I will get a migraine often accompanied with with a scalp breakout and I stop taking the Acyclovir and lysine until the pain goes away. Then I resume my acyclovir and lysine. I now rarely have any problems. But I always have to go a week once and a while without my Acyclovir and Lysine. Is the herpes virus simply one of my triggers or is the herpes virus the root cause off all my migraines, I don't know. The pain and breakouts are always hemispheric in nature.
Avatar m tn The suggested dose for pregnancy is actually 500 twice a day now of Valtrex or 400 mg three times a day of acyclovir because of the bigger dilution factor in the blood system and also the immunocompromised state of pregnancy. And yes, 36 weeks is fine if they don't expect her to go into labor early for any reason.
Avatar f tn Do any of you ladies know about it , my sister is about to have her baby tommorow and she had hpv2 but never got a outbreak down there she actually got it in her nose ... Kinda weird.. But she wants to know if her baby can have it already even b4 she gives birth , she has had it b4 being pregnant . and everyone tells her different stuff so she's confused , I jus wanna help herrrr I feel bad that I don't know the answers to her questions ... Any one know anything about this topic???
Avatar m tn ve been seeing does not have HSV-2. We use condoms everytime we have sex I take suppressive therapy Acyclovir 800mg twice a day and am genuinely really clean always making sure to wash my hands anytime I'm intimate with her. We have sex through out the week about 2-3 days a week sometimes 2-3 times during those days. Always use condoms like I specified. This past weekend she started feeling sick started with an itchy throat and headache.
Avatar n tn Few Lesions (pimple like with red base) come and go everywhere in my body (cheeks, forehead, ear pinna, eyelids, chest, arm, forearm...). I have took acyclovir only for 10 days in October and am suffering a couple of lesions coming up and clearing in few days every now and then. This is companied by random itching occurring in different parts of the body without visible lesions, I also felt some shooting pain for a few seconds (rarely) into my penis.
Avatar m tn In early Dec-07, I started having redness and itching on the glans and the prepuce, and excessive formation of smegma. This happens to me if I haven't cleaned for a few days properly (though I normally clean everyday). At first I thought it was one such, but when it didn't go with cleaning I showed a doctor. He thought it was possibly a fungal infection and suggested an ointment having Clotrimazole as the active ingredient.
Avatar f tn Long-term use of acyclovir for up to 10 years for HSV suppression is effective and well tolerated. Acyclovir is also approved for use in children, is available in some countries over the counter in cream formulation for herpes labialis, and has been monitored in over 1000 pregnancies. Safety monitoring data from clinical trials of valacyclovir, involving over 3000 immunocompetent and immunocompromised persons receiving long-term therapy for HSV suppression, were analyzed.
Avatar f tn This morning I started back on the 400 mg of acyclovir and plan on doing another 10 day cycle (unless instructed otherwise on the 20th) To date I havent had any outbreaks other than what appears to be fever blisters in my mouth which havent oozed or crusted over.. Questions; Is it possible to get HSV1 from someone that is only positive for HSV2? I read about low negatives on this site and being tested to early what are your thoughts? Should I retest ?? Test were done at C-lab in the hospital.
Avatar f tn Was discontinued. With next occurrence, I asked for another anti-viral and was prescribed Acyclovir. This one caused headaches, backache, confusion and fatigue. Was stopped. I am now having a recurrence and didn't take anything. After about 7 days, I felt it was almost over, then wham....came back with a new leison and flu-like symptoms. Tried Acyclovir before bed last night, was up most of night with headache. I haven't taken anything today. I don't know what to do.
Avatar n tn Whatever is currently going on - it's not herpes related since it's been there since early may. That said - it's SOMETHING going on and I still think it's best to avoid actual sex until you find out what it is and get it treated. ( I'd skip the receiving oral sex/69 action until you know what's going on ) I know it's hard but you know some of us here have even went years in between sex - it really won't kill you.
233552 tn?1228319699 The ER doctor just looked at it and said it was shingles. He also had another doctor come in and she said the same thing. It's on my right arm and goes up my should to my back. It's kinda in a line. They said I could take Valtrex (my fav med) but since I'm now PREGNANT I have stopped taking all meds. There has been no studies with pregnant women so I don't want to take anything. It took us tooooo long to get pregnant for me to mess it up in anyway.
Avatar f tn JMHO. That being said chicken pox is dangerous in pregnancy and can cause complications in the mother (pneumonia for starters) as well as in the fetus. I absolutely would take what the dr prescribe me since it is treatment for chicken pox in pregnancy.
