Acyclovir during pregnancy

Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir during pregnancy

zovirax

Avatar m tn no, 200mg 2x/day isn't ever effective for suppressive therapy , even when not pregnant. Not in canada so I go by the ACOG recommendations as well as the extensive research by Dr Zane Brown who has done the majority of the research on herpes and pregnancy. The herpes handbook by Terri Warren, our herpes expert here in medhelp, also supports the dose I recommended. you never, ever, EVER have to take acyclovir if you don't want to, even during pregnancy.
Avatar f tn should you have obvious lesions the week before you are due or when you are in labor, a C section will be performed. You can take acyclovir or valtrex for the last month of pregnancy in the pregnancy doses if you are interested in order to increase the odds of not having an obvious lesion present close to delivery. if the "trauma" of a traumatic birthing or an episiotomy triggered a recurrence, it would happen after the baby was born so it wouldn't be an issue.
Avatar f tn We recommend the higher immunosuppression doses of valtrex and acyclovir during the last month of pregnancy. Your body is naturally immunosuppressed during pregnancy so it takes the higher doses to better control the virus. since you were infected with hsv2 prior to pregnancy, the odds of transmission to your baby during birth are less than 1% as long as you don't have any obvious symptoms during delivery.
Avatar f tn You can only transfer herpes to a child during childbirth itself. You do not need to take antivirals trying to become pregnant or during pregnancy itself. Your doctor may suggest taking antivirals in the last month of pregnancy. C_section is an option to remove transmission risk if there are issues at the time of birth. Remember over 1 in 10 babies born today are to mothers with genital HSV2 and the vast majority do not get infected.
Avatar f tn Ask your doctor about going on suppression (taking acyclovir daily) for the rest of your pregnancy if you want to help prevent outbreaks. You could also get a prescription for acyclovir to have it on hand to take when you start noticing symptoms of an outbreak. The sooner you take it, the better.
Avatar f tn since you are pregnant, has your ob doc planned to follow you up closely for the rest of your pregnancy since you contracted hsv2 during your pregnancy?
Avatar n tn if you are going to bother to take suppressive therapy during pregnancy, make sure it is the 500mg twice a day dose. you need the higher doses during pregnancy because of the natural immunosuppression of the body. you should take it up until you deliver the baby in order for it to have any value. stopping it even a day before delivery would make it useless to use it since shedding can kick in that quickly. do you have to take suppressive valtrex during pregnancy? no you do not.
Avatar m tn To get the same effectiveness from Acyclovir how much should I be taking daily during out breaks? I have tried 600mg Acyc 3 times a day but it takes 7 days to clear up. Please advise.
Avatar f tn I have had it for 10 years and am now 7 weeks pregnant. My doctor has said it is fine to take acyclovir (the anti-viral used to treat it) during pregnancy and that many times they will have the woman take it a couple weeks before her due date prophylacticly to decrease the chance of having an outbreak during labor and delivery. They will do a cesarean if you have active lesions during delivery because it can cause blindness in the baby.
Avatar f tn After speaking with my doctor, we decided that it would be best for me to continue taking the acyclovir medication during pregnancy. I had not gotten one at all up until a couple weeks ago! Now, I've gotten my third one in about a month! (Almost 1 per week!) At nearly 37w, I'm concerned about delivering since I know the virus can be dangerous to newborns. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? What did your doctor suggest?
Avatar m tn valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug. when you swallow it, during digestion the body turns it into acyclovir. because of this unique delivery method, you get more active acyclovir available in the body so you don't have to take it as often.
Avatar n tn I was originally prescribed 400 mg of acyclovir twice daily for suppression of my herpes type 2. Recently, I asked my doctor to increase my dosage to 800 mg of acyclovir twice daily. Is there any negatives associated with taking a higher dose than what is normally prescribed for suppression. Also, are there any benefits to taking a higher dose regularly for suppression like less shedding?

Talk to your obgyn again about treating your ob's during pregnancy.
Avatar m tn Thankfully, he tested negative for the virus. I actually did not have breakouts during my pregnancy (they had decreased in number considerably as I entered adulthood), but after he was born/while I was breastfeeding, I was having outbreaks practically one on top of the other (likely exacerbated by some dental work I had done, along with hormonal fluctuations, stress, and lack of sleep). Anyhow, at the prompting of several doctors who cared for my son, I went on the suppressive therapy.
20922415 tn?1661860103 During the reproductive years, the pituitary gland in the brain generates hormones (follicle-stimulating hormone [FSH] and luteinizing hormone [LH]) that cause a new egg to mature and be released from its ovarian follicle each month. As the follicle develops, it produces the sex hormones estrogen and progesterone, which thicken the lining of the uterus called the endometrium.
Avatar f tn the natural immunosuppression of pregnancy results in the need for the higher doses during pregnancy.
Avatar f tn I was prescribed acyclovir 400mg 3xd but is not helping. It only got worse. I cant pee, I can barely walk and not even ice is helping since nothing is really swollen, just absolutely raw with a throbbing pain. How do I care for ulcers? How do I keep the area clean? if the area is naturally wet how do I keep it dry? The discharge is not helping at all. I use medicated cornstarch and nothing. When does this med start to work for you and how soon before or after an outbreak do you take it?
Avatar f tn I did suppressive therapy for remaining of pregnancy. She came feb 2011 healthy and illness free... Fast forward, we're now expecting #3 but seems like all through this pregnancy it's been outbreak after outbreak no matter what... I tried valtrex for a bit but when they up the dose due to no improvements CVS up it to a price that was unaffordable! Now I'm on acyclovir 400mg 3x day ... and after 4 days still no improvement.
Avatar f tn He masturbates on a regular basis, even during his outbreaks. What are the risks of masturbating while he has an outbreak? I can't imagine it's good for him, but I just need to know if I'm nagging him for no reason. Thanks!
Avatar f tn I am 3 months pregnant.. Now I had chicken pox so Doctor advised to take acyclovir 200 mg , 3 times... Anyone knows about it..
Avatar n tn He has herpes, and to prevent me from getting it, takes acyclovir before and during the periods we visit each other. Unfortunatley, this past Sunday (before he started acyclovir again) he had an outbreak. He promtly took the medicine (4 pills each day since) and never developed blisters. He describes it as a bit of redness which is fading. I am going to see him in two days. Is he contagious? Should we have sex or wait?
