Common Questions and Answers about Why is levothyroxine used

synthroid

Avatar f tn Compounded thyroid medication, typically, contains, both T4 (Levothyroxine) and T3, which is the actual hormone used by individual cells, whereas T4 (Levo) must be converted to T3 - the usable hormone.
168348 tn?1379357075 Eutroxsig is the other Australian one that jd2 was probably thinking of. I take both Oroxine and Eutroxsig. Oroxine is more the generic brand.
705042 tn?1228721787 One part Cytomel and two parts Levothyroxine is not a good balance. The Cytomel is metabolized very quickly and is gone in a few hours. So you are getting overmedicated half the day, and undermedicated half the day. You're going up and down like a yoyo every day, and the chances are pretty good your bloodwork will show you are hyper.
Avatar m tn TSH is a pituitary hormone that is affected by so many things that at best it is only an indicator to be considered along with more important indicators such as symptoms and also levels of the biologically active thyroid hormones, Free T4 and Free T3. What symptoms did you have when originally diagnosed as hypo? Were your Free T4 and Free T3 tested then? If so, please post those results and ranges.
Avatar m tn white blood cell is 7.8 red is 4.3 thyroid level 2.4 hemoglobin is 13.
Avatar n tn What is her daily dose of Levothyroxine? Which, if any of those symptoms does she have? Why do you say she has liver problems?
Avatar m tn I have used Levothyroxine for one year. Daily dose is 1/2 tablet 10pcg. I want to know whether Levothyroxine does any harm to liver or kidneys?
Avatar f tn I have been taking levothyroxine 137 mcg once a day for a couple of years. Can I stop taking it all at once or do I gradually have to get off of it?
Avatar f tn I lkso had my levels drawn and my TSH Low but T3 is high. Why would this be going on? Do I need cytomel with my synthroid? I am feeling confused and no sex drive, tired and moody. What should I do.
363243 tn?1331033850 I know that I have to get my TSH down but why do I feel so horrible while taking levothyroxine and why would my TSH become elevated like that? It seems to really affect my heart so what should I do?
Avatar n tn LOL - you're quite welcome... there's a lot more you'll need to learn, but you'll get it as you go along. First off, there are 2 antibody tests for Hashimoto's, so make sure they did them both in order to determine that you don't have it. The tests are Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOab) and Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TgAb).
Avatar f tn which means that I take Methimazole to block my body from making thyroid hormone and then it is replaced with the correct amount of Levothyroxine. This is not a common approach, so I doubt this is what your doctor is doing, but were you prescribed Methimazole or other anti-thyroid medication in addition to the Levothyroxine?
Avatar n tn I had the same question and concern for an endocrinologist on Thurs., 2/26, and she said two things on this subject. 1) There is only one study about IQ and mother's TSH during pregnancy, and the study has been largely discredited due to have small sample and the way it was executed; 2) TSH level has most effect on baby in later pregnancy (believe third trimester). In my case, she's having my TSH checked every four weeks during pregnancy.
Avatar m tn I got my test results for my thyroid disorder as follows: TSH Value:6.28 (H) Ref Range: 0.35-5.50 ulU/mL Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody Value: 1582 (H) Ref Range: 0-35 IU/mL Can someone please explain to me what this means? Thank you.
Avatar m tn What was the reference range for those FT4's. Ranges vary lab to lab and have to come from your own report. That was before medication? How long ago did you reduce your dosage? It takes a dosage change approximately 4-6 weeks to take full effect, because of the long 1/2 life of the levothyroxine. The difference between TSH and FT4? TSH is a pituitary hormone.
Avatar n tn Carbamazepine (CBZ) is an anticonvulsant and mood stabilizing drug used primarily in the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder, as well as trigeminal neuralgia. It is also used off-label for a variety of indications, including attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), schizophrenia, phantom limb syndrome, paroxysmal extreme pain disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder".
393419 tn?1228447393 I am just throwing questions out there ..... if it is an increase, your body has to have time to get used to the extra hormone.
Avatar f tn FT3 and FT4 are much more important than TSH, especially once on meds. The target for FT4 is about 50% of range. Yours is at 24%. Target for FT3 is 50+% of range, and yours is 16%. So, you are still hypo. It's not unusual for symptoms to worsen a bit or new ones to appear on starting meds. That's partly due to the fact that you are unlikely on a therapeutic dose yet. It looks like you need an increase. How much are you taking now? You had no symptoms prior to meds?
Avatar f tn Levothyroxine is the generic name for the medication. Synthroid, Levoxyl are brand names of the same medication. Some doctors, especially endos, it seems are convinced that the brand names are superior to the generic. Generics can be nmade by any number of manufacturers, and there is no guarantee that the same manufacturer is making your tablets from one refill to the next. The reason cited for preferring brand names is usually "consistency".
7991152 tn?1396061810 I have been on thyroid hormone for 45 yrs. I switched to a generic; levoxyl once for about 2 yrs and never want to do that again. I didn't attribute it to the switch because me loosing my mind didn't happen immediately. I couldn't understand what was wrong, I felt like my mind was not there, not me, crazy. Then read in a pill book that levoxyl had difference dosages of ingredients then Synthroid did. I remember there being significant differences.

Avatar f tn i thought propanolol is a cardiac/bloodpressure med (i'm surprised they didnt give u levothyroxine or synthroid0 the average person tsh needs to be below 4 but a woman trying to concieve should be below 2 and it doesnt take long with the meds to get your thyroid under control good luck
1831920 tn?1320857757 I took topamax before and it made me feel weird, but Celexa i'm not sure about all medications are sort of a trial and error thing, kinda like mascaras lol . You have to find the one that works for you.
Avatar f tn T4 does convert to T3 -- Armour or the addition of cytomel is a consideration, but the research on this is not that convincing - although some patients feel better with it. Target TSH is around 1.0, but "fine tuning" between the 0.6 - 3.5 range you mention is not likely to make a difference. So, from thyroid standpoint the options are do nothing or try some T3. Otherwise, look into non-thyroid causes or life-stressors, etc.
19622464 tn?1481141180 Levethyroxine is only T4 (synthetic) and should you have T4 to T3 conversion problems, Levothyroxine is not only not helping you, it is making you sicker!!! Ask for Free T3, Free T4 and Reverse T3 tests and please insist you get them. It is of utmost importance to truly know your thyroid function. Let me know your results if you decide for these, when you get them back.
