m not sure if you live outside of the USA, but my understanding is that Lantus is NOT available for use in a pen here in the US. My daughter just switched to Lantus via syringe & Novolog via pen after 8 years on an insulin pump. Her diabetes educator just gave her the Lantus prescription 3 days ago & said it is not available in any other form. I have read that outside the USA, however, it is sold in pen format.

I remember my switch to Lantus. They weight gain is normal because it is a long lasting insulin. Just remember that the more insulin you shoot, the more weight you gain. Try cutting back on your carbs and that will cut down on your Lantus and that will cut down on your weight.
Remember that human insulin, like Lantus, is not like switching from tylenol to advil. There are more significant signs your body will give you.
And as for the sweats about a half hour after taking Lantus, there IS a slight peak action with Lantus, although this peak action for most people is several hours after taking the Lantus. In my case, I usually take my Lantus at about 6 am, and I notice a peak that causes my glucose levels to drop by about 8 am. This happens even if I have not taken any Novolog or eaten breakfast (sometimes I wait until I get to work to take Novolog and eat breakfast), so it has to be the Lantus peaking.
If you believe your are reacting badly to Lantus (or any other medications) you should ask your physician for an alternative, at least to verify it is the medication and not some other factor that is causing the problem. Lantus is popular for it's 24 hour action, but so is Levemir (Novo Nordisk). NPH insulin can also be used for long acting insulin, though two injections may be needed to get the 24 hour coverage.
i was treated with himulin 30/70 insulin for a years and usually my fasting sugar is high (200-400) and now my new doctor give me lantus and apidra insulin instead of himulin insulin and now my fasting sugar reaches to 215 not exceeded. Are lantus and apidra combatable for me?? and what are the side effects of them??????????
I think everyone has to work out what is best for them, but hearing what works for others sometimes gives us ideas on how to deal with our own problems we have. There's a book out called "Using Insulin" that talks a lot about Lantus, and I think their statistics are that about a third of those using it need split doses.

If this low dose of lantus twice daily is working for you without any problems, there is no reason to change it. Lantus is written as once daily but many doctors(including myself) and patients split the dose because even though it is supposed to be "peakless", it is not for some people. At low doses it works especially well as a split dose. Levemir can be used instead, and is more commonly written as twice daily.
I have been diabetic for ten years now and have been taking lantus and humalog this whole time. Well a new doctor Im seeing took me off lantus due to the fact that it could cause my twins to become insulin resistant. She has me taking more of the humalog but it doesn't seem to be helping me and now i have a harder time controlling my sugar where before i kept it pretty well controlled. Should i get a second opinion or does anyone have suggestions?
I believe that your morning highs are because the Lantus is indeed petering out while you sleep. From what I have read about Lantus, it works BETWEEN 20-24 hours. In my case, too, it does not last a full 24 hours. I do split my dose and achieve excellent control this way.
Ask your doctor about doing this. Of course you cannot do it overnight because the previous day's Lantus is already at work, and so it has to be done one unit at a time over several days.
So here is the thing been diabetic for you a few months now and i have been through alot of pills and my doctor hasn't keeps upping them i seen him today and he gave me insulin to take.. but he still wants me to take all the pills is it to much it would be
1000mg metformin 2x a day
100mg januvia a day
4mg glilmapride 2x a day
20units of lantus

This is his fourth day on Lantus. He is doing fine but I am having problems trusting the Lantus - when his b/s drops below 100, I want to give him a can of apple juice, and of course that causes a moderate high. Also, he is not interested in stopping to eat as many snacks and meals because he does not have to 'feed' the NPH. Are these common problems in families starting on Lantus? It's as if my son and I are not making the most of this honeymoon period of a good insulin.

To me, the basic difference is variability and flexibility. With Lantus, you know exactly what you are dosing, and you also dose exactly the amount of fast acting you need. With 70/30 there is a lot extra to take into account. I personally don't know many, if any, people who are still using mixed insulin, except in poorer countries where they can't get anything else.
As for starting your Lantus in the morning I would check with your endocronologist. Lantus is a 24 hour insulin, so I am not sure what effects taking it in the morning opposed to taking it at night would be, but of course ask. Also ask your endocronologist about taking your humalog before meals, I am not sure if you meant that or if you do just take it before bed time. And are you eating a snack when you take humolog before bed? Humalog is a quick acting inulin, usually taken before meals.
