Avatar n tn During moderate/sever flare-ups I took prednisone orally, in foam suppository as well as mesalamine orally and through suppository. In moderate flare-ups mesalamine orally w/ mesalamine suppositories. My question is - beyond the general risk that HSV presents - how additionally risky is this for me? It is a possibility that at some point I will have a flare-up that will require immonusuppressive therapy. If I was to contract HSV could my UC symptoms become more severe?
Avatar m tn Please explain to us where you're getting your info from. We're dying to hear. And what does so-called "herbal" mean? Herbal means plant. It's not so-called. You're right, many medications did come from herbs. Why? Because they knew they worked and had a history of safety. But they used them by isolating one ingredient, which makes them stronger but also much more dangerous. Plants have a synergy that medication lacks.
Avatar m tn Thank you for the reply. Just for my own peace of mind I will re-do another Gen 4 test at 12 weeks. Waste of time and money? Maybe but will ease my mind once and for all.

Avatar n tn In general, uncoated tablets are absorbed extensively in the proximal ( beginning )portion of the GI tract; therefore, delayed-release tablets are used to achieve a local effect in the colon. Following oral administration, 20—30% of a dose is absorbed, with peak plasma concentrations achieved in 3—12 hours. It is specially formulated to release the medicine after it has passed through your stomach into your intestines. If you are finding only the shell that is very common.
Avatar f tn Her gastroenterologist started her on Mesalamine (4 capsules daily) and later added prednisone 100 mg enemas to try and get the flare-up under control. Things are getting better and she has some of her strength back. There is one puzzling thing that the doctors are not able to pinpoint. This is an intermittent fever that starts in the afternoon and lasts to the night. In the morning the temperature is back to a low 97 degrees fahrenheit and stays stable until afternoon below 98 degrees.

Avatar f tn Hi Nicky. I'm sorry about your recent U.C. diagnosis. According to the mfg: "The dosage of Mesalamine 500 mg suppositories (Generic Canasa) is one rectal suppository once daily at bedtime. The suppository should remain inserted for one to three hours or longer, if possible. The normal course of therapy is from three to six weeks depending on symptoms and sigmoidoscopic findings". So the 30 day supply falls within the recommended duration.

Avatar f tn I contacted my doctor and his guess was that the powder worked topically in the digestive system and the alcohol is metabolized by the liver and therefore does not work as well. I contacted pharmacies and the drug company themselves, and there is no date know for when it will be available again. Is anyone else experiencing this? Have any tips, I'm pretty new to this. Or is anyone taking a different medication and getting good results?
