Welchol for bile diarrhea

Common Questions and Answers about Welchol for bile diarrhea

welchol

Avatar f tn I have an answer for you. I too had my GB out, and soon after had the same symptoms. I DIAGNOSED IT myself....not much initial help from the gastro MD. It is called "biliary diarrhea". It's fairly common, surprisingly. Apparantly has no reflection on the quality of the surgery (I had the short cut method). However, good news: I've beern able to control it, for which I do give gastro MD credit....The cholesterol drug Welchol. Without it I'd be housebound!
Avatar n tn Ask your doctor about Welchol; it's a cholesterol medicine that binds bile salts. I had mine taken out in February of last year and tried to "tough it out," but after a doctor put me on Welchol, I rarely ever get sick after eating.
Avatar n tn I have spent 25 years of my life living with daily diarrhea since they removed my gallbladder. I'm one of those people whos stomach needed the bile that was released after eatting. Is there a pill out there that releases what the gallbladder did to stop this?
Avatar n tn I did not have any problems until then. I suffered with IBS for years until my Gastro doctor put me on Welchol and it is wonderful I take 3 pills a day and I can get anything I want and I don't have any IBS episodes anymore. I am not afraid to go out anywhere anymore. But I have another problem.
Avatar n tn My husband had his gall bladder removed three months ago and he still has almost daily diarrhea. He is careful with his diet and does not comsume too much fat. Does any one have any ideas on why and diet .
Avatar n tn There is about a 5% incidence of watery diarrhea immediately following removal of the gallbladder that is thought to result from bile salt irritation in an empty GI tract. It usually responds well to resins that bind these bile salts (cholestyramine) so they can't irritate the intestine. Most commonly the intestine adapts such that these agents can be weaned off over several weeks.
Avatar f tn m afraid to eat, because this will produce bile, which in turn leaves me sitting on the toilet for hours. I have lost 8 pound since the surgery. The mornings are the worst, upon rising, I will go 6 - 8 times within the first hour, but it's just liquidy bile, bright yellow. I'm at my witts end...work thinks I'm a suck because this surgery has an expected recovery rate of just a few days.
401016 tn?1201451802 I would assume they're giving you welchol for diarrhea and the Ami for GI spasms. This is a combination that is given to many (or combinations like it) when someone is experiencing unexplained abdominal pain (perhaps due to spasms) and diarrhea. Ami is used fairly frequently in GI problems, so don't consider it a 'head med.' It is, but in this case it's probably being used to work on the receptors in your GI tract - not your head, although it will do that, too.
Avatar n tn Track to see if the bouts of diarrhea coincide with the intake of fatty/dairy. But if the diarrhea is too continuous check to see if the doc will give her something like bentyl which will slow down the 'fast transit' through the GI tract. If that doesn't help, consider a bile-binding resin like that mentioned above, or perhaps Welchol (sp?) which can function in the same capacity.
Avatar n tn Is there any connection between the two? Any help would be appreciated. She has gone through many tests and doctors, and still no relief except through steriods. Thanks!
Avatar f tn So I’ve found a few interesting things, like estrogen can reduce the production of bile (is this true, I was on birth control for a while, and I was actually a little better). I’ve also heard there are pills to lower the production of bile, but then I read into it and they are cholesterol reducing pills which reduce the re-absorption of the bile, and reduce diarrhea. I’m confused.
Avatar f tn I also suffered horribly with diarrhea for about a year after, and eventually was put on Welchol to help. It also helped me to reduce the fried and fatty foods from my system.
Avatar f tn The doctors said my gall bladder was so diseased that it had to be removed immediately. Since the removal (5 years ago) I have had chronic diarrhea everyday, all day. I would say that I have at least 3 bowel movements a day and most days it is around 5. I'm wondering if there is anything I can do about this. I'm 23 now and I feel like I always need to be near a bathroom. This is no way to live. Is there any over-the-counter mediciations or supplements that I can take?
Avatar n tn The unfortunate thing about alkaline reflux gastritis is that there are no trustworthy tests for it. Seeing bile in the stomach after the patient has been placed left side down, sedated, and a scope rammed down their throat is far from diagnostic. This is important because failure of medical therapy would indicate surgery to disconnect the duodenum from the stomach. This makes it very difficult for any bile to make it backwards to the stomach and allow the stomah to heal.
Avatar n tn Beside gallbladder, bile ducts have to function normally for bile being delivered into intestine. So be sure to try to find a proper diagnosis before deciding for gallbladder removal since this won't help you if the disorder is (also) in the main bile duct. You should also try tio find a cause of fatty liver (medications, metabolic disorder..
1543146 tn?1293661166 I have gastritis and fibroImilgia (sorry I can;t spell). When I drink alcohol or take asprin or pain killers. I get alot of bile flowing. What can I take for pain that won't upset my stomach and what can I take to control the bile? I have gone to the doctor and they just say stay away from these things. With Fibro... I am in a ton of pain but I can't take something to try to control it because it upsets my stomach. Ton of pain in my side and back pain - worse at night.
268356 tn?1236002604 Have you tried getting Welchol. They are bile-binding pills prescribed by your dr. I currently take two in the morning with breakfast and two with dinner, and eat lean dinner, and low calorie foods. I find two much fatty foods and too much sugary foods set off my dumping syndrome from gallbladder surgery in 2016.
Avatar f tn He said that he has had over 1800 surgeries and has only had one bile leak and it was fixed with stents to drain the bile for 6 weeks. I feel comfortable with him so I am going to get it out next wed. He did tell me that it is not written about much but there are a very few cases of gallbladder issues that have diarrheah as a symptoms so its possible but he cannot promise the gallbladder will fix the diarrheah issues.
Avatar n tn I had my gall bladder taken out February 27th. I had a major attack Dec. 27th that put me in the ER, and around the begining of February I started taking bile salts and digestive enzymes too. I kept taking them right after I had my GB removed and have continued to take them. I have tried skipping them a few times, and things didn't go so well, I had bloating, burping, and felt very uncomfortable, especially if there was any dairy or higher fat food that I had eaten.
Avatar m tn This is another one of those things that's different for everyone. I tried the gold bond...it did nothing for me...Aveeno, oatmeal, nothing touched it. I went to topical cortisone...2-3% over the counter stuff....that's the only thing that gave me relief....then, after about 6 weeks, the itching & rash just went away...and it's one of the sides that never came back. Of course, then my hair started falling out....
Avatar n tn COLESTID - if you take 6-8 tabs daily you will see a huge difference in stopping your diarrhea, it changed my life ! It has no side effects and is a miracle drug for relieving diarrhea, you will be able to leave the house, have one bowel movement a day and it will be solid. I cannot function without it. Hope you are able to find a doctor to prescribe this for you , it will literally change your life in this area anyways. Take care and hang in there !
Avatar f tn Yellow diarrhea suggests, that not enough bile is excreted with the stool, probably due to bile flow blockage within the liver or bile duct (bile gives a normal brown color to the stool). If there'e no bile, fats can't be absorbed, they reach the colon, irritate colonic wall and thus induce diarrhea. In this case stool would be pale, foamy, floating and sticky. So, the general advice about the diet is: exclude as much fats as possible from the diet.
Avatar f tn t get the diarreha under control, you may want to talk to your doc about using a bile-binding resin like questran or a product like Welchol.
Avatar f tn Water is very attracted to bile salts in the GI which is another reason for the diarrhea. Cholestyramine acts to make bile salts insoluble so water no longer finds it so attractive! This way the bile salts can hang out in the small intestine, where they belong, for a little bit longer breaking down some fat, transporting fat into tissue and hopefully eliminating the diarrhea!
Avatar n tn i have had diarrhea for 4 years. recently i have started having pains in my lower stomach and back what could it be?
Avatar n tn Some experts believe that it results from an increase in bile, especially bile acids, entering the large intestine — which may act as a laxative.
